Spring has well and truly sprung in the Sub Merchants camp, who are excited to unveil the second instalment of a trio of singles that will culminate in our third full-length EP - 'Columbia Road' - an exploration of contemporary garage and breaks in the year 2022, soundtracked by those pushing the scene forward in new and exciting ways.

Into the spotlight steps Bristol’s own Daffy for SM003’s second offering. The versatile and enigmatic producer showcases his signature crispy, shuffling drums; overlaid with etherial spaced out synth pads before unleashing a damaging low end baseline to get those chests rattling. 

Making a huge splash in 2021, with releases across Time Is Now Records, Juicy Tunes, and Rhythm Lab; as well as launching his own label Animated Audio, Daffy is just getting into his stride and is a certified label selection from the Sub Merchants.

Rounding off the A-side of singles, the enigmatic Kyoto based producer Stones Taro offers up a certified UK bass club tool guaranteed to get those glistening summer dance floors moving. ‘Knock My Ear’ leads with a catchy looping vocal hook and crisp, energetic drums before a squelchy wriggling acid line reels you in and a thumping bassline sets the gas-mark to 100.

With an impressive array of digital and vinyl releases under his belt; across the likes of Scuffed Records, Time Is Now and Cheeky Music Group to name a few, Stones Taro represents a further diversification into the multi-genre grey areas of club and bass music for the Sub Merchants.

Out here in the middle of nowhere it was easy to forget the importance of human contact. For as long as he could remember this little cottage in the depths of the countryside had been home. He was as secluded as one could get, and that suited him just fine, after all you didn't miss what you'd never had. Nature and its inhabitants were his closest confidants; the sheep that roamed the fields, the bees that buzzed in his garden and the woodpecker that perched on his window each morning - they listened to his thoughts, feelings and ramblings, without expecting anything in return.

It's been over a year since London's Control Freak Recordings, the label arm of party starters Cabin Fever, shared a new record in their White Label series. Always available as a super limited run of hand-stamped records (once they're gone, they're really gone), previous contributions have come from Syz as well as Guava, Breaka and pals, and now they're firing it up once again with an EP from Graz-based producer Awo Ojiji. While the wigged-out, percussive tracks take cues from UK club music, specifically the realms of leftfield techno and bass, he manages to craft his own singular take on these UK-centric sounds.

PREMIERE: Awo Ojiji - Woodpecker [Control Freak Recordings]

Ruse (@rusemusicbristol) makes his Scuffed Recordings debut with the Masami EP, featuring three new darkside UK club tracks.

Previously releasing music as Silene, the Bristol-based producer has made appearances on labels like Fever AM, Nous Disques, and Miracle Drug, picking up in-the-know support across NTS, Rinse and the Crack Mix among others in the process.

EP opener ‘Masami’ is a skippy, sub-loaded delight, taking influence from the early 00s work of Horsepower Productions and El-B, echoing the moment where UK garage morphed into dubstep.

Next up is ‘Kudo’, which layers breaks and electro-inspired production under an otherworldly, warped vocal.

Ruse shows a different side to his production with release closer ‘Fukawa’, a melodic roller led by grooving percussion and stripped-back flutes.
