On 20th of July, Hamburg-based artist DJ MELL G will deliver the first solo release on her label JUICY GANG RECORDS. ISSUES conveys her personal experience of Borderline Personality Disorder, through a musical narrative of electro. 

Borderline Personality Disorder affects how a person thinks and feels about themselves and others, causing challenges in everyday life. Although the spectrum of BPD varies from person to person, some symptoms include self-image issues, difficulty managing emotions and behavior, and pursuing a pattern of unstable relationships. 

In the short span of two years, DJ MELL G has followed a gradual rise to becoming an in-demand and innovative talent with an internationally-recognised profile to match. However, she has faced mental health issues along the way, including several situations on tour that later induced panic attacks. 

DJ MELL G uses the phrase "loops" to describe the moments when she is caught in a vicious cycle of self-doubt, fear, and feeling strange in her own body shutting out close friends and colleagues around her. "It's kind of like riding a roller coaster," she explains. "Everything is okay for a short time; then it starts again. I hate myself so much for being the way I am and why I never have my feelings under control. After that, everything happens all over again, and you go completely crazy. You know it will stop again at some point, but it seems impossible while you are in the loop."

ISSUES is a powerful and honest portrayal of DJ MELL G's story of understanding and managing her mental health in the music industry, while also questioning and breaking the broader issues of stigma towards BPD. The LP illustrates her creative path and self-reflection, conveyed through lyrics, track titles and specific cadences. By writing and producing music about her own experiences with BPD, she intends to bring awareness and empower others to speak out, exchange and create a meaningful dialogue. 

A music video directed by Ricarda Haehn will accompany the release, adding a visual representation of the tracks on the record. Visual artist Maison Hefner will also collaborate with DJ MELL G on the artwork and statement merch.

PREMIERE: Ole Mic Odd - Bunsen Burner (Source Material)

Over the last few months we’ve been working on a project that aims to raise awareness of an issue that keeps losing public awareness. In the hope of finding safety and protection in Europe and a fair asylum procedure, people are forced to cross the Mediterranean Sea in unseaworthy boats. Not only are state authorities and the European Union refusing to provide humanitarian aid, they are criminalizing civil sea rescue.
Because of this ongoing situation, we have started another fundraising campaign in order to make a small contribution to the essential work of Sea-Watch e.V. Their main goal is to try to save as many people as possible from drowning in the Mediterranean Sea. Additionally, they are committed to educating people about human rights violations at the European borders, for example with their podcast “Grenzerfahrung”.
We collected a variety of sounds by ten beloved artists to present our very first Various Artist EP: “Passages”.
All the collected proceeds will go straight to @seawatchcrew .

Inspired by the music of UK producer and electro head Ben Pest, DJ MELL G uses skittery electro elements and breakbeat patterns on BORDERLINE to explore the sense of unease that comes with BPD. The long intro builds tension and explodes into a menacing melody and rippling bassline, depicting her inner restlessness and ever-increasing tension. "This reflects quite well what I go through when I come into a loop," she says, describing how she questions herself and doesn't understand herself when the loop occurs. "I feel strange in my own body and push everything and everyone away from me, harming them or harming myself. I try to pull myself together after that and tell myself not to act like that, which is actually also wrong, because I have to allow my feelings, but just find a different way of dealing with them. Nevertheless, the song has a clean line because you know that it will stop again at some point. The song describes, so to speak, my emotional rollercoaster ride during a LOOP where you always get out again, but it seems impossible while you are in the loop."

Closing track BEYOND 70 is a portrait of the tension levels DJ MELL G's psyche, which can hike to breaking point, where "everything goes downhill from there." It begins with an elastic bassline and crisp snares, snaking into a glitchy, siren-sounding melody as if to convey a sense of urgency.

DISTURBED MIND follows suit with a 303 synthline and a galloping bassline, expressing how life races on, even after a BPD loop. "Often after my loops I feel indifference, inner emptiness and helplessness. I just exist. Because life goes on anyway. Or at least it must."

DISTURBED MIND

WHAT I FEAR delves into the feeling of fear and how for DJ MELL G, it's as if fear is always looming in the distance. "Even if you have fear, it is coming. At least for me. It is not suddenly there. Often I make the fear worse for myself than it is because this is again connected to the loop," she explains. "The second synth that comes in also reflects that the fear plays with you and it is not me, but it’s simply the fear that dominates me."
