Süsses Oder Saures ***ZWEI*** (2015)

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I think I am quite an unconventional collector: A lot of my records are shitty ones that only have 2 seconds of greatness on it. 

The reason is that I bought 50% of my collection to sample from it. Drums, fender rhodes, basslines, vocals -  I have a fetish for dope and strange sounds! I like a lot of stuff other people tend to find weird or unpleasent. A porno vocal record from the 70s with the German voice of David Hasselhoff on it talking hardcore macho shit - I want it! Charles Aznavour singing a chanson in German - with his french accent -  telling a woman that she is sloppy and got lopsided heels - take my 50 cents and give me that record too! 

The rest are records with dope music on it to listen to. From Rap to Blues, Rock, Soul, Funk, Disco, Bossanova, Jazz, Electro and Boogie... I collect everything. It only has to be be funky! 


 2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

I like the look of it, the haptic feel, the sound. Its like a Kinder surprise egg: Its small yet you get a good feeling and you got something to play with on top of it all!


 3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix? 

I tried to mix it up stylewise. There is Funk, Dub, Rock, Fusion, Soul, Electro, a German cover version of a Beastie Boys classic, TV and movie theme songs, early 90s HipHop influenced Dance music, Disco Rap, Freestyle, Boogie, Chanson, Italo Disco and other stuff in this mix. 

Germany was always a forerunner regarding uncoolnes. Thats why I incorporated some German vocal records where someone tries to act cool, but totally fails. I got a soft spot for this tasteless stuff. The biggest failure of being cool is on a 80s Flexidisc I own where an old guy tries to speak in HipHop slang about breakdancing!

I wanted to avoid re-issues or 45s from the 90s or contemporary stuff. The 45s I used in my mix were released from the 50ties till the 80ties. I picked some shitty but funny records that I bought for cheap, some great classics, some records that should be classics (but no one knows), some hard to get stuff which can cost you 60 Euros. Its all in there. 

I even screwed up a Rod Stewart 7” because the song sounds much better on 33 1/3 than on 45 RPM!

My mixes are on Mixcloud. There are 2 mixtapes which are called Jeep Beats Vol. 1 and 2 where I mix up contemporary Future Beats stuff with 90s HipHop instrumentals - these are very chilled. Than there is one Future Beats and Future Bass mix thats more for the clubs. And two mixtapes dealing with German Rap.

About DJ Deckard:
Born and bred in Washington, Keith Harris (a.k.a. Deckard) starting DJ-ing in 2000, at venues and clubs in Seattle and Canada. He moved to San Francisco in 2005 where his skills and talent evolved and became even more prolific, garnering interest and accolade and earning him a spot in the underground music scene.

Deckard made his big splash as a member of Coda in 2006 at Burning Man. Soon after he joined forces with the Space Cowboys whose parties are legendary in San Francisco and Burning Man and whose Ripecast podcast was nominated for Best Podcast of the Year by Breakspoll for 2013.

Mixing together a blend of music selection including, but certainly not limited to breakbeat, nu funk, and house, Deckard keeps crowds on their feet and moving backed by his unique sound and ability to mix genres whether it be playing a sunrise set at Breakfast of Champions or closing down the main room in front of a packed warehouse.

Deckard has performed in a variety of venues on the west coast and Canada with DJs such as Jondi & Spesh, Uberzone, Lee Coombs, Plump DJs, Dylan Rhymes, Meat Katie, Elite Force/Simon Shackleton, Worthy and more.
