Brooklyn, New York City. Home of fancy coffee shops, expensive condominiums, and trendy neighborhoods. But in 1995, Brooklyn was not synonymous for “gentrification.” Back then, Rudy Giuliani was Mayor of New York and he was in the midst of a serious war against crime. In 1995, Giuliani’s New York registered its lowest crime rate since the 1970s. From 1,156 homicides then to roughly 300 homicides now, the Big Apple has come a long way.

In the heart of Brooklyn stood the “Doghilee,” stomping ground for the crew known as the Boot Camp Clik. BCC, which helped spearhead New York’s hardcore rap scene, was comprised of four unique groups: Black Moon, Smif N Wessun, Heltah Skeltah, and O.G.C. Emerging with Black Moon’s seminal debut album, Enta Da Stage, BCC cemented their status with Smif N Wessun’s debut, Dah Shinin.

Released January 10, 1995, Dah Shinin is celebrated for the synergy between Smif N Wessun’s two members, Tek and Steele, and the cohesive, gritty production courtesy of Da Beatminerz. In 1998, The Source placed the album in its list of 100 Best Rap Albums.

What You're about to hear is Tek and Steele take us through the backstory and the making of their quintessential classic. They talk about:

Gangstarr (Guru) Tribute MIX

I was originally working on a D*# mix but I got annoyed with how "clean" the mix was sounding so I abandoned the mix. Being annoyed with how clean the D*# mix was sounding and the general "cleaness" of musical sound these day, I went diggin' through my record collection to find records that would constitute a more raw, authentic sound. The frustrating thing about going through a record collection is that there is very little music that you can't find online through a few google searches. Even though the rarest of rare records can be found online these days, I decided to stick with records that I originally discovered only by buying white labels and looking on the b-side of better known 12" records. I'm sure you can find most (if not all of these joints online, but a lot of the music used on this mix is lost somewhere in the online abyss.  I've got to say that it was a lot of fun going through and finding all of these joints in my collection because all of these records were bought on just a hunch (especially the bootlegs). I've also got to add that for every quality bootleg that made this mix there's at least 3-4 wack bootlegs that I regret buying. I guess that's the fun part of diggin' for records.

One of my favorite MC's of all time is Mos Def. The man was so damn fluid on the mic and actually cared about the things he talked about. A true poet. Growing up, it was very important for me to see people who were actually intelligent while still retaining that cool factor. I think many times in the black community, you equate a person being extremely well-read as either snobby and elitist or a straight sell-out with no self-awareness. Mos was able to shatter those misconceptions beautifully. The man is an award-winning actor, true mc, poet, and producer. And he does all of them with skill and a nobility. Preemo vs. Pete Rock Mixtape - DJ Abdool, DJ SIM

In 1998 the divide within the rap game was at its most glaring. On one side of the stage stood the jiggy, “shiny suit era” mainstream rappers, with CD sales on their mind, expensive tastes, and a penchant for fly cars, clothes, money, cash and hoes. At the other end of the stage was the underground, “backpack”, independent scene, where rappers and crews still made time for college radio, performed small venue shows, and aimed more for putting out records on vinyl  than for selling CDs in stores. A strange state of affairs was that this was a year where the dichotomy of Hip Hop was at its furthest split. And then an album dropped and something happened. The deep chasm between the mainstream and the underground was filled, but not by much.

Yesterday marked the fourteenth anniversary of Black Star’s debut album. It was a higly anticipated release celebrated and critically acclaimed album immediately from the moment it dropped. It gave a celebrity face to the indy movement that was going on, and did it’s best to bridge the gaps between the polar-opposite movements that were co-existing inside of Hip Hop’s genre. Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, was the second full-length album on Rawkus Records and was the epicenter for the NYC underground movement.

Last week the good folks at Complex tackled another famous list by profiling 50 Best Rawkus Records Songs. Inspired by the idea honor Mos and Kweli’s epic release, and the label that birthed it, we figured it was our turn to pay respects as well. Sticking more to Rawkus released vinyls, which was the essence of the movement, we put together a list of 14 of the dopest B-Sides from Rawkus records.
