Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's classic LP 'Mecca and the Soul Brother' turned 30 recently, so reminisce for a spell with a mix of OG Samples, Remixes, & Blends.
The way Pete sampled old jazz/funk/soul records and layered them over hard, dusty drums was masterful (how he caught that little part on the fadeout of an Ohio Players record for 'Lots Of Lovin' still amazes me).    
Combine that with C.L.'s sharp yet fluid lyricism (how many MC's could rhyme like THIS back in '92??), and you unquestionably have one of the pillars of early 90's NYC boom bap.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this fourth volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the year of 1989, utilising only the Funk, Soul and Disco tracks from which they were originally constructed. Artwork pays homage to Paul Winley's iconic 'Super Disco Brakes' compilation series.

#HIPHOP50: Classic Material The Breaks #4 (1989) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This fourth bonus mix follows last month's Hip House round up with a collection of Hip Hop tracks influenced by the New Jack Swing sound of the late 80s and early 90s. Featured tracks include production from some of the producers central to the New Jack Swing sound – Teddy Riley, Eddie F, and some from those better known for a more classic Hip Hop style who also dabbled in the sound during the era – Marley Marl, Pete Rock and many more. DJ Parler Memorial Day Samplology Mixtape 2016

Whilst having a hard drive clearout I found a bunch of my early mixes that I hadn't listened to in a long time. Some have stood the test of time pretty well, others - not so much :)

This first one was based on a mix I originally recorded in 2002 for a 'Bedroom DJ' competition, then re-recorded in 2004 to tidy up a few bits I was unhappy with (when I moved to Exeter and was using this on CD to get gigs). It's the mixtape that started it all for me :)

"The Payback Mix (Pt. 1)" is still one of my favourites - an hour of non-stop heavy hip hop, ragga, and classic beats and breaks on an early Ninja Tune tip. I couldn't scratch for shit back then, but the mixing is tight. This is from back in the days when I used a portable minidisc player alongside my 1210's to drop samples(!)

this is Vol 2 in a series of original breaks mixes. 
After finishing Vol 1, DJ Imperial and I had this idea to do a volume 2 using a sampler, and really blurring the lines between what was produced and what was played. When Imperial moved back to Sweden, and using a sampler seemed to be unnecessary with the editing options in what was then new- protools, I stepped up to do Vol 2 w/ one of my favorite DJ's and crate diggers.....DJ Platurn!!! 

Since the previous mix was predominantly live, and with this new concept, Platurn and I found that we were not in jeopardy of reinventing the wheel. We met up, and came to some conclusions...we wanted it to be B Boy/Girl friendly, we werent going to limit what we used to any category, and that we wanted to feature one of our favorite DJ's with the illest cuts DJ Teeko.

This format proved to be really hot, and i dont think we were the only ones to do something like this, but we were definately one of the first, and we were really proud of the end result. Being able to extend and overlap breaks indefinately really is a great way to approach a breaks mix. This is really proven in moments like the Olympic Runners kazoo mashup, or the Ramsey Lewis rock blend. By not limiting the selection to any categories we get edits of newer releases of classics like the Kenny Dope/J5 and its monster drums intro, but without all the excessive parts (the song lol). We also get DJ Teeko just murdering the cuts in moments like the Shadow/Cut Chemist numbers redo.

You don't mess around when labeling someone as a musical pioneer; it’s a dangerous path to tread. When it comes to the name DJ Nu-Mark however, it’s a safe bet.

Nu caught solo acclaim with the drop of his industry celebrated Blend Crafters EP which featured his timeles cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and featured production for MF Doom. Nu’s debut LP, Broken Sunlight revealed his innovations into a jaw dropping collection of heartfelt music featuring Aloe Blacc, Quantic, Large Professor, Bumpy Knuckles, A-Skillz, J-Live
Tiron & Ayomari, and Charles Bradley.
It comes as no surprise when you see the list of coveted stages that Nu-Mark has performed on around the world, including Glastonbury and Coachella. As per his stellar reputation of being one of turntablism and sound design, Nu-Mark has also judged numerous DJ competitions including Red Bull Music Thre3style with Jazzy Jeff, DJ Craze, Skratch Bastid and many more.
You can also add in Nu-Mark's own label – Hot Plate Records, which has released a hoard of production collaborations, including his sought after Run For Cover LP in 2021 featuring Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, Full Crate, Jungle Fire, The Traffic and more. Nu brought along Pharcyde’s Slimkid3 under the
faction TRDMRK on two albums featuring Del the Funky Homosapien, Diamond D, Darondo, Guilty Simpson, and Murs which shot to number one on the CMJ charts.
Nu-Mark's ongoing “Zodiac Tracks” is further testament to the fact that music is a life blood for this man. With his unwavering adoration of vinyl, the renowned collector pays homage
to pivotal artists by mixing them seamlessly in their respective astrological sign in live Birthday tribute videos. The project has been so successful that, after reaching millions of views, Nu- Mark teamed up with Method Man (Wu-Tang Clan) for an exclusive song to honor all the astrological signs in a song called “Zodiac Killah”.
Nu has a keen eye for musical evolution. Known for his trademark ability to conjure up sounds from the most bizarre of items, including a collection of children’s toys, late night talk show host and producer James Corden enlisted Nu-Mark to take on the role of in-house DJ for the hit TV show –
Drop The Mic.
To date, Nu-Mark has been featured in the critically acclaimed documentaries / motion pictures; Scratch, KeepinTime, Where We’re From, Coachella: The Movie, Rock the Bells, Popstar and MacGrubber.
