Finally, here is a new RED STRIPE DISCO delivery with this 11th episode. As usual, very happy to have been able to cook a nice mix of Jamaican / Reggae-related Modern Soul, Funk, Dubby Disco & Soulful gems. A few of them will sound obvious but the mix also contains a handful of really rare & under the radar jamaican gem that I am happy to provide here.

Written and recorded in Antananarivo, Beirut, Geneva, Harare, Montreal and Paris, fortune tellin’ ep conveys proud internationalist aspirations. Its six cuts uncover instinctive melodies backed by a freewheeling instrumentation. Captured in its naked rawness, 'tropiques' ’ musicianship might evoke the likes of The Band and The Byrds, but with a sound that remains utterly distinctive. 

Fortune tellin’ ep is the timeless soundtrack to an epic journey of unbridled cavalcades (ballad of the pale travellers), wistful navigations (to the sea), caravan drifts in the Sahel (variations on chitepo avenue), hopes of emancipation (motherland), merciful whims of love (stay on the run) and, ultimately, to a psychedelic story of redemption (lighthouse).

Les six morceaux de fortune tellin’ ep, écrits et enregistrés à Antananarivo, Beyrouth, Genève, Harare, Montréal et Paris, racontent les tribulations d’une modernité cosmopolite. On y retrouve des mélodies spontanées et des instrumentations en roue libre. Les compositions saisies à vif rappellent par moments l’éclectisme de The Band ou The Byrds.

À eux deux, M.ono et Luvless ont certainement façonné une grande partie de notre House favorite ces dernières années. En tant que producteurs leur réputation n'est plus à faire après leurs excellents disques sur certains des meilleurs labels d'aujourd'hui dont Kolour LTD, Heist pour M.ono ou encore la série Sleazy Beats Black Ops pour Luvless. Leur propre Rose Records est un autre de ces labels emblématiques du renouveau de la House européenne (bien que comparativement peu actifs, la qualité est toujours au rendez-vous), servant de sortie créative à nos deux sujets du jour en plus d'une flopée d'excellentes productions de leur compatriote allemand et autre patron du label: Martin Hayes; ainsi que d'un très bon EP de Junktion, sorti au coeur de la chaleur estivale de 2015 et aussitôt adopté. Ci-dessous, un apercu de leur influences, de leur futur et de ce qui leur tient à coeur avec un mix aux petits oignons pour régaler les oreilles.

One of the pinnacles of Chicago house music's '90s wave, Derrick Carter has been widely acknowledged as one of the better DJs of the world. With innovative productions, consummate technical skills and an effortlessly joyful attitude of rocking a crowd, his impact has infiltrated throughout the spectrum of dance music. Derrick began DJ’ing at the age of nine, spinning disco records at family reunions. Born and raised in the western suburbs, Carter was into music from a young age, but during his teens Chicago's house scene sucked him in for good. Before long Carter became a strong presence in the city's underground dance scene.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (19th February) Our guests in Hour 2 are Krankbrother, who are brothers, DJ's, producers and run a label and monthly London party, which alongside Phonica Records is happening this weekend on 20th Feb at Fire, with our guest in Hour 1 Prins Thomas and previous guest Axel Boman. They had this to say about their mix;
"After both spending ages going through our record collections, we settled in for a listening session in our office behind our bar in East London. After playing each other a load of records and drinking a load of whiskey we realised two things. Firstly, that we had way too much music to fit on a mix, and secondly there was a lot of variety in what we’d chosen. A selector's curse made even worse by the fact there are two of us. So from there we tried to piece together as many of these records as we could whilst still allowing the mix to develop in a smooth organic way. We didn’t want the mix to jump around too erratically so we made a lot of edits to help it flow. The records we ended up choosing are a little bit of what we play and love from the last 40 years spanning acid, disco, new wave, afro beat, indie and techno. Despite the mix being quite retrospective, on a more personal level, the mix will always mark a very special moment in time for us. Shortly after we made our way to our homes from that very listening session, Kieran’s wife went into labour.  Off they went off to the hospital, Kieran on two hours sleep and a whiskey head and shortly after we welcomed yet another Clancy boy into the family.”
