CHLOE CHARLES - Single "Business" - Break the Balance

Thomas Bullock a DJ and part of the Wicked Sound system collective in San Francisco was the creator of this rather remarkable set of music that he called "eye of the tiger". This set, at the legendary but now defunct club 177 Townsend, started at approx 6 am when the bar re-opened for business. At the beginning of the part 1 you can hear Thomas standing on top of the turntables yelling at the crowd. His voice and the increasingly frenzied crowd response were picked up by the stylus on the record player. The record essentially acted like a large mic diaphragm....picking up the surrounding noise and channeling it to the needle. He wanted to make it clear that shit was about to get funky and that despite the late hour he expected folks to git down. Particularly cos the bar was open once again. Time to take the edge off. The music represented was a typically eclectic mix of electro, techno, disco, two step, rock, reggae and dub. It is by no means a seamless mix. There are many errors.....some of which were intentional...many of which were not. But what comes across throughout is the sense that he was going for it big time. Taking chances and going with the flow. It is one of my favorite dj sets full stop. Nuff respect Thomas. You nutter.

A voyage through international influences taking in, and tweaking out, sounds associated with the Middle East, Europe, West Coast America and Africa.

The adventure kicks off with 'KO Debout', where swallowed vocoder-style vocals unite with the ‘kalimba’ thumb piano, a traditional African instrument whose origins date back 3000 years. The hand claps and fizzing synths of Persian Funk adopt a Middle Eastern vibe, before '149 Dalston Airlines' and 'Nigeria What?' see débruit venturing back into the heart of Africa. Both deploy the unique percussion of the Yoruba people from West Africa, with finale 'Nigeria What?' homing in on the joyous, twanging ‘Highlife’ guitar sound.

Includes 3-D artwork by Rainbowmonkey and 3-D glasses are included for your viewing pleasure.
