This is a mixtape I made for Tad Nakamura’s documentary A Song For Ourselves.

The film documents the life of Chris Iijima, a Japanese American musician, activist, educator, and father, who’s music was the soundtrack for the Asian American movement in the late 60s, early 70s.

For the mixtape, I arranged Chris’s music along with Blue Scholars, Bambu, Kiwi, and Native Guns songs, interwoven with sound bites from the movie. We also did exclusive remixes which sample Chris’s music and feature verses from Geo, Bam, and Kiwi.

“GO DO U” is a confident, street-aware Hip-Hop record that speaks directly to a reality many creatives experience in their own hometown. The track reflects on how some people in Boston claim love for the city, yet show little support for local events, artists, and movements happening right in their own backyard. Instead of embracing the culture at home, some choose to ignore it, criticize it, or only show interest when something happens somewhere else.

Through sharp lyrics and honest storytelling, the song calls out that mindset while making one thing clear: real Boston talent doesn’t stay stuck in one place. The music paints a picture of artists and creatives from the 617 traveling, networking, performing, and building connections beyond the city limits—proving that Boston talent moves just like artists from New York, Atlanta, Philly, or anywhere else.

At the same time, the song makes it clear that people have the freedom to move how they want. If people want to travel outside Boston, rock Yankees gear in Red Sox territory, or enjoy places like Vegas or California, that’s their choice—go do you. The record respects people living their lives however they choose.

But the line gets drawn when it comes to disrespect. The song sends a strong message that while everyone has the freedom to move their own way, trashing the city of Boston won’t be tolerated. Pride in the hometown still matters, and anyone trying to disrespect the city or tear it down will be put in check. Loving your city means standing up for it, even when you’re branching out beyond it.

Rather than turning the message into bitterness, the song keeps a confident and mature tone. The hook captures the central theme: if people don’t want to support what’s happening locally, that’s their choice—go do you. Meanwhile, the artists keep pushing forward, representing Boston while expanding their reach and building opportunities elsewhere.

At its core, “GO DO U” is about independence, respect, and staying true to your path. It reminds listeners that you don’t need everyone’s approval to succeed—but you should always carry pride for where you come from.
