So here's DJ Resoul final hands-on Dj mix for 2021 mixed for Best Works in Berlin. In the Nineties sampling created new musical Styles such as Trip Hop, Drum & Bass, the new Broken Beat and Nujazz. Hip Hop mixed with Jazz the new Jazzmatazz Style. Here is a personal List of 50 Tracks made by worldwide artists from forward thinking Labels such as Mo Wax, Ninja Tune, Good Locking, Compost etc. Remixes of Björk, DJ Shadow, Tosca, Pressure Drop, DJ Krush, Nightmares on Wax to name a few. It opened a new Universe to me in the 90s and hopefully you will enjoy my musical time-travel in the vein of my recent Streetsoul Set or my Kaleidoskop Tribute.

A mix to celebrate the great Burt Bacharach and his music.

Burt Bacharach and his music stepped into my life in the late nineties. Back then, Bacharach was considered a has-been by most, an old dinosaur whose kitschy music (or muzak…) was only ever played in elevators. The chance of a 15-year-old indie kid discovering his music was understandably rather slim. But somewhere around that time, a few things changed (most notably the easy listening craze of the mid-nineties, Noel Gallagher mentioning Bacharach as a source of inspiration and Burt’s cameo in “Austin Powers the Spy Who Shagged Me”) and in 1998 - Burt released a celebrated comeback record together with Elvis Costello.

Over the years my love for the pop maestro grew and Bacharach became more or less a cornerstone of my musical universe. Today the music he wrote together with Hal David can be found on hundreds of records in my collection. Not surprising since it was practically mandatory in the late sixties to include at least one Bacharach tune on your record for any artist on the softer side of the spectrum.

I have probably forgotten a bunch of must-haves I should have included. Some of the tracks in the mix are cheap as chips and easy to find while others are mucho rare. I wouldn’t say that all of them necessarily are the ultimate versions of each track but they all have a special place in my heart for different reasons.

I’m not going to write a book on all of them but a few songs deserve an extra mention. One of them is the vocal version of “Nikki” by Ed Ames. Nikki was written for Burt’s daughter with the same name (who sadly later committed suicide) and is one of his most beautiful melodies. I can’t go 30 seconds of listening before bursting into tears. Burt recorded it as an instrumental and he preferred it that way, but I think Hal David’s lyrics add an extra dimension to it. Another big favorite of mine is “To Wait for Love”, written in 1964. Herb Alpert recorded “To Wait for Love” on “Warm” from 1969. The song is a jewel in Herb’s late sixties catalog when he had started to move away from the patented mariachi sound towards a soft MOR-oriented territory.

I have included two tracks from “On the Flip Side”, a made-for-TV musical from 1966 for which Bacharach/David wrote the music. And what a soundtrack it is! Not only does it have a bunch of great Bacharach/David numbers but also it features Rick Nelson AND Joanie Sommers. An all-star team if there ever was one! The mix ends with THE version of “A House Is Not a Home” by the Anita Kerr Singers. I don’t know how many times I have listened to it since I discovered it during one of my AKS phases a few years ago. Simply sublime!

The Burt Bacharach Songbook

The first time I heard @alexander_antonakis was warming up for Romanthony live at O25 in Frankfurt (Main) in ca 2000. I could stop there. Then at a house party in a flat above the infamous 21st Jahrhundert. Both times I took notes. Namely I remember Inner Life's - Moment Of My Life (famously sampled by Ian Pooley for Forc Inc.) and Venus Dodson's Where Are We Headed? I was decksharking hard. Later when I moved to Berlin we booked him for our Premiere Party for Maestro at Kinzo. I guess it's fair to say he is a local legend with his residencies for Radio X , their Chocolate Parties alongside the late Heiko M/SO and the equally famous Monza club.

We had a fantastic TSTD resident night at Monarch Berlin last saturday. Lots of friendly, smiling faces on the packed dancefloor. Amazing fashion styles too, as you can clearly see from the foto....

here is a recording of 11pm - 2am: I especially love the early hours as it is this pure slow smooth disco session, that gets people into the dancing mood. 
The Mix is the way it is with all little human mistakes, distortion and things that happen if you deejay close to the dancers (like talking to someone and forgetting the next mix....). it features a ton of edits we released on Too Slow To Disco, which makes me very proud. thanks to all the smooth producers involved!

DJ Set: Too Slow To Disco/DJ Supermarkt at Monarch Berlin 29.4.23

It started in the mid-eighties with David Rodigan. Every show was listened to and archived by me. Then came the combination of Hip Hop and Reggae, much played by Red Alert on Kiss NYC! Around 2000 the compilation "Darker than Blue" and "Hustle" appeared on Soul Jazz. Reggae and soul became part of my program. Also Daniel Best set standards for mixing in my DJ sets with "Dub Infusion" as well as his "Best Works Selection". You can listen to a small selection of my favorites here. 95 minutes mixed live. May it give my friends a sunny day.

Following on from a series of brilliant EP’s and singles via Citizens of Vice, Paper Recordings, Slightly Transformed and Rare Wiri he has now delivered a classy 15 track album 'Keep The Mystique' on the excellent Italian label @hell-yeah.

To celebrate the release of the album we invited Secret Soul Society back to the Le Visiteur decks and asked him to craft us a Balearic Sunset mix. As you would expect from Cal it’s rather brilliant.
