As has been well-documented elsewhere, I spent much of 2012-2014 doing DJ sets of other people's music (as opposed to strictly my own) for the first time since the 90s. I had so much fun hunting around on the internet, looking for the latest weird stuff to work into the set. I once heard a comedian describe their process, how they tried a new joke each night until eventually, they had a solid 75 minutes of their best material. That's how this set felt to me. 2013 was also the peak of EDM, and although I never fully embraced that movement, if you were a DJ, it was impossible not to be influenced by it on some levels. As a result, there's a few moments in the set that, years later, seem a little borderline in terms of an authentic personality fit..but I guess that's the dichotomy between immediacy and timelessness. When playing my own stuff, I sweat the credibility and the 'journey.' This, in contrast, was just for fun. - DJ Shadow

We’ve been dreaming about launching our own Podcast series for quite some time now, so it’s exciting to finally have this new project off the ground! The Detour series will be our chance to share some of our favorite music with all of you – stuff that we don’t get to play in our normal DJ sets or mixtapes – but stuff that is really moving us nonetheless, and more often than not, the stuff that’s on constant repeat on our ipods! So….here it is. With no rules, no genre constraints, just good music to move your mind, body, and soul – Welcome to The Detour!

For the time being, we’ve decided to make our Podcast episodes freely downloadable via Soundcloud. Ovaj melankolični kolaž nastajao je spontano kroz 6 godina potrage za izgubljenim yugo draguljima. Od antikvarijata, do buvljaka, od ebaya do discogsa, od sajmova i oglasnika do kolekcionara, te ploče sam morao naći dok su neke nalazile mene. Nosio ih je poštar, nalazilo ih se i izvan omota među stotinama bezomotnih, dolazile iz svih krajeva ex-yu, pa i inozemstva, ali zajedničko im je jedno bile one male, velike ili srednje: utori urezani u njih, duboki su i bezvremenski, sjetni i sretni u isto vrijeme. Iskrene, neiskvarene i jednostavne riječi pjesama umotane su u debeli pokrivač vrhunski odsviranog jazza, funka, soula, beata, texmexa i latina. Mix je nastajao i nestajao nekoliko puta u živo na MKII-ojkama tokom zime 2012./2013., da bi se jedne večeri inkarnirao (bez postprocesiranja) u ovom finalnom izdanju. Time rečeno možete biti sigurni da sam mazio i hendlao te pločice više puta prije nego li će ova infuzija čistog zadovoljstva kliznuti u vaše uši. Stisni sviraj i pokloni svojoj baki.

The setting: Summer, 1999. 

DJ Shadow is touring clubs in Europe, hitting many countries (including Italy) for the first time. Reflecting the aesthetics of turntablism which are dominating DJ values, Shadow turns in his most scratch-heavy set to date, keeping the vibe distinctly b-boy. Blazing through such classics as “The Number Song (Cut Chemist Remix),” “Lesson 4,” and “Entropy” before settling into slower material from Endtroducing.

According to Shadow, “This was at a time when hip-hop DJs were expected to really show off. I was massively inspired by Q-Bert’s concept of scratch languages and vocabulary, which I think you can hear during the solos over ‘Lesson 4’ and ‘I Changed My Mind.’ Listening to it now, it’s no wonder I started having wrist trouble!” 

This particular recording emanates not from a club, but rather an anarchist warehouse and pot farm, apparently out of reach from local law enforcement due to some loophole. Shadow recalls, “There were massive pot plants everywhere, and the vibe was depressingly laid back at first. When I started, there were about 30 people there. By the end, though, it was closer to about 900, and it was live.”
