Thirty five years of professional DJing this summer! 

I have spent many past posts musing about the early days, so I will spare you words of nostalgia today. Instead, I want to hit you with the kind of set that I feel is an accumulation of my past experiences of what works on a dance floor, what I personally love, and which of those sounds I feel connect with what's happening today. 

Music has largely stopped giving us anything truly new in the past decade, but the absence of newness doesn't mean we shouldn't discover music that is new to US, and sometimes we should also remind ourselves of the great eras, genres and grooves we may have forgotten. So today, instead of giving you newness, I present to you my musical opinion on contemporary timelessness.

I would personally dance my ass off to this set. LMK if you would too.

Monday. We board the lonely Submarine for the first time for a trip camp to playa. The energy is high, the tanks are full. This is my set.

This is an ode to my friend Scott, who dreamt big and dedicated a year and a lot of effort to make a moving home for the people he loves. We all gathered around or on top of his dream to celebrate friendship. For those of us that were lucky to play on top of it, seeing our family dance to our music is a memory we’ll never forget.

The first twenty minutes are part of the welcoming ceremony and boarding of the sub.

"I was the first set of the day at one of my favorite places in the world, Pink Mammoth on a Saturday in Black Rock City.

Throughout the week I had found myself searching for ways to top past years which left me chasing expectations and this set seemed to be another illustration of this idea. Previous years my friend Kenny and I had played Pink Mammoth to a packed dance floor as https://soundcloud.com/peaceinnoise, but this year he wasn't there, and neither was a big crowd. At first, I was disappointed, craving that energy, but as I closed my eyes and focused on the music, I felt a smile form on my face. It didn't matter how many people were with me on this morning, and even if there was one person in their tent grooving as they woke, that wasn't any less important.  

Thank you #burningman for not giving me what I asked for and instead what I needed. Than you Zach, Tim Green and the Pink Mammoth sound guy for your warm greeting and giving me the opportunity to be a be a small part of your camp this year.

Thank you also to anyone who rode by smiling and grooving on your bike, and the group of new friends who ended up joining me on the dance floor."

One of our all time favorite DJs and producers who can easily switch from upbeat grooves to chill out vibes to original classics is everything we strive for at Sunset Grooves.  To honor the lovely island of Jamaica, this dj set is simply my favorite feel good reggae tunes.  You will hear dub, conscious dancehall, lovers rock, ska,  and traditional roots reggae songs. Jamaica's musical influence is also heard in some Latin, West African, Turkish, Arabic, and Isreali tunes as well.  I really tried to tell a story with the songs, so I encourage you to listen closely to the lyrics, which speak about uniting together, becoming a better version of your self, the problems and challenges with money, the joy of smoking marijuana, everyday struggles, living good, and of course, LOVE. Almost all of these tracks I own on vinyl, and I had such a blast recording these all week long, just vibing on down memory lane, in preparation for  this set.
