DJ Format has put together a 60 minute mix of funky psychedelic records to give us a taste of what to expect from his forthcomung BBE compilation album. 'Psych Out'. The mix varies from slow stoner-psych to fast & furious B-Boy breaks and features tracks from Brazil, Yugoslavia, Russia, Japan, Turkey, Poland, Africa, India, Switzerland, Greece, Jamaica, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Hungary, Uruguay, UK and USA.

Whilst having a hard drive clearout I found a bunch of my early mixes that I hadn't listened to in a long time. Some have stood the test of time pretty well, others - not so much :)

This first one was based on a mix I originally recorded in 2002 for a 'Bedroom DJ' competition, then re-recorded in 2004 to tidy up a few bits I was unhappy with (when I moved to Exeter and was using this on CD to get gigs). It's the mixtape that started it all for me :)

"The Payback Mix (Pt. 1)" is still one of my favourites - an hour of non-stop heavy hip hop, ragga, and classic beats and breaks on an early Ninja Tune tip. I couldn't scratch for shit back then, but the mixing is tight. This is from back in the days when I used a portable minidisc player alongside my 1210's to drop samples(!)

I was recently asked to play a night called Classic Material in London. The idea for the club is to give each month over to a year from Hip Hop's past and only play tracks released during it. I was given 1989 and this set was all done from original vinyl, clicks, jumps and all.
