Swung layers of rhythm gel with misty chords and 808 bass pressure, riding the line between 2-step excitement and hypnotic, long-form arrangements. This is introspective body music, steeped in the sonic worlds of UK bass, looped 90’s techno and grainy dub.

Russian exterminator makes touching ambient about growing plants and rendering the indescribable.

His name is Suuri-Pieksä, and apart from his daytime duties of killing bugs in Saint-Petersburg’s notorious communal apartments, he is to release a four-tracker EP. The cassette titled ‘Fitolampa’ (grow lamp) is coming this May on Triangle & the Snitches – new Russian underground label, supported by a number of incredible artists worldwide, including Berlin’s Freddie K, London’s Moxie, Henry Greenleaf, Wonja and Clad.  

The musician describes his work: ‘I was aiming to convey to a listener a personal feeling of nostalgia – something from the past, which only myself could relate to – and invite them to become a spectator. So that phantom, alien emotion in its intangibility for them would become almost hauntological’.

As background as ambient should be, ‘Fitolampa’ is still engaging and rewarding. In a way, it unfolds tenderness in a simple and sometimes wannabe naïve fashion. While seemingly friendly, each track has its own secret from the yesteryear.

Helping me out with this week's mix is Mumbai based producer, DJ and actor Adi. Here's what he has to say about the mix:

Now that I'm taking a long break from music, its refreshing to visit the sometimes minimal/pulsing/linear, and sometimes popular sounds that made me want to be a DJ in the first place. I'm thankful that Apoorv let me DJ, it's been a while since I played. This helped me build my confidence and fondly remember the joys of just mixing two tracks. I played with a lot of random tracks that one could have expected from me at a gig, always shifting momentum and experimenting till something fits.

Hedonisms is a series of mixes in which each episode represents a certain time of the day and I will explore genres corresponding to that time, as you'd experience in a music festival.
