Deep Into The Underground (06/01/24)

Fresh off unveiling pioneering imprint Purple Label Sound, Brandon Lucas returns today with two remixes of his celebrated Dr. Cornel West collaboration and debut single release ‘Got That Hope.’ 
 
The original house track features a spoken word contribution by the esteemed intellectual and thought-leader, Dr. Cornel West, with whom Lucas has worked for several years, with production and vocals coming from Lucas. 
 
Lucas launched Purple Label Sound to re-center house music on its Black traditions, and the remix package sees two unique voices from contemporary dance music put their spin on Lucas’ work, Detroit raised selector Seth Troxler and the singular singer, songwriter and producer Seven Davis Jr.

House and techno globetrotter Seth Troxler serves up  a delicate nine minute groove. Troxler takes listeners on a transcendental journey of spoken word and intricate pitch layering, intertwining the poetry of Salakastar with Dr. Cornel West’s recognizable oration of the original ‘Got That Hope’ release. The track serves as yet another reminder of Troxler’s mixing expertise, as he demonstrated earlier this year after releasing an archive of over 300 hours of mixes from the past 13 years. 
Funky-soul-fusion Texan producer, singer and songwriter Seven Davis Jr. jacks up the tempo in his take of the track, adding a club-ready flare to his remix and demonstrating his production skills by drenching it in left-field electronica. Davis Jr. made waves back in 2015 when he released his debut album Universes on independent label Ninja Tune and has since taken his experimental genre-blending talents to even greater heights, releasing his latest EP collaboration Numbers with Ukrainian vocalist Ivan Dorn.  
 
While still in its infancy, Purple Label Sound is committed to elevating a diverse collective of voices in dance music. An extended body of work from Dr. Cornel West remains forthcoming in 2021, and the remixes from Troxler and Davis Jr. are a welcomed indicator of the caliber and tone of music to be expected from the label.
