Solid Steel (20th June) Fanu is our guest in Hour 1, an electronic music artist and DJ from Finland, who has been releasing music for many years, plus remix duties that include Bill Laswell and our own Amon Tobin. In his own words:
"In addition to making/pushing/DJing broken beat music and running my label, Lightless, I've been working on loads of hip hop in the past 1.5 years, some of which will start to surface soon on Redefinition Records under my FatGyver alias. Hence, instead of going all electronic with the mix like I most often do, this time I wanted to go for the theme, "hip hop to D&B and back". Hip hop and drum and bass used to have a lot in common, after all, and their aesthetics can be very similar."

"This is the demo version of the song Storm featuring Edan and Mr. Lif. 
In the 11th hour of making The Audience's Listening, I swapped the music out from this funky break beat to a psychedelic post punk drum machine.  At the time I was looking to reinvent myself and I saw this as the perfect opportunity to do so.  I couldn't be happier with how the final product turned out.  It's fun to go back and listen to what Edan and Lif actually recorded their verses to. This is more of a "classic" Cut Chemist production that one might recognize from the late 90s/early 2000s." -Cut Chemist

While a majority of the Working Man LP addresses the bleaker issues of working class society, Death of the Boombox provides a playful detour, acting as an old-school throw down over the kind of boombap production that intends on blowing out cheap subwoofers. This isn't a rehashing of the played out "hip-hop is dead" argument, nor is it a eulogy for the revered portable stereos of the past. It is an energetic return to a lost moment in time when sharing music with friends didn't involve an internet connection. Songs were simply blasted throughout the neighborhood from two speakers perched on top of a b-boy's shoulder. "Dig…put your back into it."
