Viva Recordings welcomes the Finnish producer Smok to the fold with My Soul, a stunning trio of deep house gems. Otherwise known as Juha Moisala, Smok hails from the exotic-sounding far north city of Oulu and has been active in Finland’s house music scene since 2002. From clubber to DJ to producer, Smok’s journey has found him recording for labels like Salted Music, DeepClass Records, Artizan Music, and Phat Elephant Recordings. Viva Recordings is just the latest stop on this emerging talent’s ascent.

“My Soul” opens the EP, announcing itself with a swinging, crisp four-on-the-floor rhythm. Gentle chords, a percolating bass line, and string swells plant the seed for the filtered and arpeggiated melody that drives this lovely tune. The following track, “Chasing,” features dramatic piano splashes and a chunkier balance of beat and bass. It’s here to add a pensive but flowing flair to late night dance sessions. “With the Stars” closes the release on an even deeper note, hypnotizing with pulsing pads, deep subs, and a drum pattern accentuated with a clap that warmly hugs the stereo field. Smok’s My Soul is exceptional, a deep EP for thoughtful floors.

MOTTO Podcast is a podcast series by me, Miia Magia. All the tracks are handpicked in Helsinki mainly from the Scandinavian artists and labels with their upcoming, fresh & already classic releases. 
MOTTO 18 follows my favourite pattern - starting from deeper and housier tunes and continuing to groovy techno.

On the second hour it's time for pure house music. Guest mix selector this time is Finnish Janne Tavi based in Berlin. He's serving us a smooth and classic set with 100% Nordic artists including his own productions. Next to his djing and music productions he's running A&R at the legendary New York-house label Ibadan Records who are celebrating their 25 year anniversary this year!! Janne also has reasons to celebrate - new music is waiting behind the corner to be released early this year!

Bio:
Smok a.k.a. Juha Moisala, is from Oulu, Northern Finland. He made his first public performance as a DJ on the local club scene back in 2002, and has become a staple of the Deep House scene in Northern Finland. His rise from Clubber, DJ and now Producer, has been a steady journey, all the while he has been honing his ear and production skills.

Smok has focused on deep house and his releases on labels like Atjazz Record Company, Unquantize, Viva Recordings, Phat Elephant Recordings, Salted Music, DeepClass Records and Youth Control have been charted in Traxsource Deep House TOP10 and supported by artists such as Steve Bug, Boddhi Satva, Ralf Gum, Shur-I-Kan, Funk D'Void, Murray Richardson, Satoshi Fumi, Stacey Pullen, Tom Lown, Simbad, Jask, Dave Mayer, Sander Van Doorn and The Magician to name a few.

In addition to his own work, Smok’s remixes are in high demand after working for artists like JEPE, TJH87, Jupiter and Tom & Hills.

Topping all of this off Smok’s tracks have featured prominently on Toolroom’s Ibiza 2019, Deep House and Poolside Croatia 2016 collections, watch out for this unassuming Finnish DJ/Producer, he’s on the rise and climbing the Deep House wall of fame.
