Gmbos Biography

Zinhle Gerald Mhlanga, aka Gmbos was born and raised in the eastern side of Johannesburg, South Africa. He is the founder of Gmbos Records. Gmbos grew-up listening to jazz, disco and traditional music which greatly influenced his taste in music. The elements and arrangements of the music genres he subscribed to growing up inspire him to this day, hence he has such a great affinity towards pure soulful Music.
It was in 1997 that Gmbos embarked on an exodus to Johannesburg where he was gorgonized by the mesmerising and euphonic sounds of a certain Disc Jockey "DJ" who used the SL1200 mixer. Witnessing, for the very first time in his life, the skilful and artistic montage of sounds emanating from the SL1200, as the DJ used Vinyls to mix various music genres from Hip Hop to Kwaito and a bit of Soulful House Music, was the beginning of Gmbos’ journey with sound. It was at this point that his heart was captured and he saw himself fall in love with the idea of becoming a ''DJ'"  Disc Jockey. Another genre of music stole his heart at the same time as he found himself engrossed in the sounds of Hip-Hop, which he terms “a real movement”. Having been an ardent follower and active participant in the local and international Hip hop scenes, Gmbos’ subscription to the Hip-Hop culture made him a fully fledged member of the Hip-Hop movement. 
Three years later, Gmbos decided to follow his heart and pursue his dream by moving to Rocky Street in Yeoville, Johannesburg. He quickly realised that in order to survive, he would need to find himself a job. He held down a few jobs in order to sustain his livelihood and saved up for purposes of investing in Dj Equipment. He started off his equipment collection with two channel mixers and an SL 1200 Technic, then he started learning how to mix using Vinyls . 
Having had a somewhat brief introduction to the world of music, Gmbos moved back to Benoni in 2005 where he hooked up with the Legend, DJ Sizwe Quinton Twala, aka DJ Sizwe. They then decided to open a Vinyl Record shop and a DJ School in their home town (Benoni) to bring music to the youth and make it more accessible to the community, as well as share it with those who have the same passion. In 2006 Gmbos went to London to visit a store called Vinyl Junkies at Soho for a week to research on how to manage a Vinyl Record Shop.
Upon his return, he opened an account with Vinyl-Distribution-Worldwide Dance Music and it was at this point that V-Funk Records shop was born at Cranbourne Avenue in Benoni. In 2006, Mandla Doctor Gwembe aka Axctacy introduced Gmbos to the world of digital music, exposing him to various production softwares: Reason, Cubase and Fruity Loops. It was at this point that he got introduced to composing electronic music. 
His Vinyl Store V-Funk Records was featured on BPM Magazine Editions #34, #35 and #36 in 2008, but, Gmbos’ big break came in 2010 he when got a digital distribution deal with Nick Holder, a label owner of DNH Records based in Canada. Through this deal, his Music was distributed on various online music channels (Traxsource, Beatport and Juno Downloads) and a portion of his production was compiled by Sony House Africa CD Rumble in the Jungle (Sacha – Journey Gmbos Dope Mix). Gmbos’ Discography is a follows: House Africa Grooves – Nick Holder (Gmbos - Forever Begins) – Zinx Retrospect Instrumental - Gmbos-Analog (Main Mix); Gmbos –Elements of Mind Body & Soul feat Lil Soul (Main Mix) and in 2014 Gmbos feat Trigger-Absolute Seduction remixed by Abicah Soul.
Jus Nativ a DJ/Producer from Soul Candi remixed “Good to You” a Gmbos ft Lady L track (Jus Nativ Remix). Gmbos also worked with Infinite Boys on the Round & Round Remix (Gmbos Remix).
