Black Hearted Brother – the new trio formed by Neil Halstead (Slowdive, Mojave 3), Mark Van Hoen (Locust, Seefeel) and Nick Holton (Coley Park, Holton’s Opulent Oog) – release the ‘Got Your Love’ EP on April 1. It will be available from iTunes and all download retailers and streaming services.

The EP’s lead track is an edited version of one of the standout songs on last year’s debut album, ‘Stars Are Our Home’, which always sounded a bit like a lost indie-disco classic, mixing moody Mary Chain melancholia with a thumping electronic beat and squelching sequencers.

“‘Got Your Love’ is really the poppiest song on the album,” agrees the band’s Nick Holton. “It started life on GarageBand, but we added a big floor drum, three big guitars, Mark’s bass synth and Neil’s catchy melody. It became a long song, clocking in at just under eight minutes thanks to Mark’s epic intro and outro. It actually features a massive hammer – and it is really massive – from Brooklyn as the pulsing percussion.”

There is also one brand new track. “‘Don’t Take The Weight’ started life in my large vault of instrumental ditties,” explains Mark Van Hoen. “One of the privileges of the Brethren is the opportunity to cherry pick from this fruitful orchard of sonic delights, and this one did the trick. This time Nick steps up on lead vocals, as he did on several cuts on the album.” The EP is rounded out by two very different remixes of the title track. Chilean electronica artist (now based in Paris) Ricardo Tobar turns in a brilliantly wonky rework which was premiered recently on The Quietus. The other remix is a gloriously downbeat, echo-laden reworking by Ultramarine – the legendary UK techno duo formed by Paul Hammond and Ian Cooper, who released ‘This Time Last Year’, their first album since 1998, last September.

Speaking of bands on the comeback trail, it probably hasn’t escaped your attention that, since Black Hearted Brother first released ‘Stars Are Our Home’ last October, Neil Halstead’s old band Slowdive have reformed and confirmed appearances at festivals around the world later this year. We’d like to think that BHB was a big step towards this being possible. Here are some of the nice things that were said about the album:

"In 1990 David 'Man' McSherry and Steve Cobby began to record as Fila Brazillia. Hitherto their collaborations had been infrequent and ultra-spontaneous. Both had maintained positions in conventional bands but needed to trade the constraints of the "write - rehearse - gig - record" treadmill for a more fluent, and ultimately enjoyable approach. A nursery period for a music culled from sonic experiments and ideas quickly put to tape emerged. A treatment of all sounds as "objet trouvé" and a hobbyist attitude prevailed. 

When Dave Brennand a.k.a. Porky heard a piece composed on a wet Wednesday, he asked to release it. They happily agreed. As previous unreleased work hadn't warranted anything but comedy monickers - "Dada Black Sheep" being one - a name was needed. At that time the media's "killer dog frenzy" was in full swing and a breed known as the fila brasiliero was the subject of a debate in the Commons. This was misheard on the radio by Steve, proposed and accepted for the single and eventually the name stuck. The track "Mermaids", was Fila Brazillia's first single, released in Spring 1991, and marked the beginning of a decade which saw Fila yield seven highly acclaimed albums and a skip-full of singles on Pork Recordings and over 60 remixes." 

Steve Cobby's current projects (2009) include establishing Steel Tiger Records with Sim Lister; home to J*S*T*A*R*S and The Cutler (Cobby collaborations with Lister and Porky).

Born and raised in East London, Victor Davies, the son of a West African father and a British mother, grew up listening to artists like Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield, but it was watching his older brother's friend (and member of '80s soul group Central Line) play guitar that truly inspired him. He got his first guitar at age 14 and began taking classical lessons, though his impatience with reading music caused him to quit after about a year. He began to explore the burgeoning soul/funk scene in London, and also played in a variety of bands around town. In the early '90s Davies received a publishing deal from Virgin, as well as Chrysalis (both of which were later bought by EMI), but things fell through when the label wanted him to write in specific, poppier styles and not the soul- and funk-infused ones he preferred. Faced with this dilemma, he quit writing songs for others and taught Thai kickboxing (a sport he had studied since childhood) to help make ends meet in order that he could start his own company, Afro Gigolo, and began recording simple acoustic demos of his own work and sending them to local independent labels. One of these, People Records, liked what they heard so much they included one of these demos, "Runaway Train" on a 1998 sampler. More singles followed, and in 2001 Davies released his self-titled full-length debut on Germany's Compost Records. Three years later Hoxton Popstars came out on SPV Audiopharm. Davies' combination of acoustic instruments, string and brass arrangements, and Latin, soul, jazz, and house influences won him fans in Europe and Japan (where the single "Fire" was the on the top of the charts for two weeks), though he had yet to have the same amount of success in his own country. Signed to V2 Records, however, his next album, Hear the Sound, received a better response in England when it was released there in 2006. ~ Marisa Brown

German artist and electronic music pioneer (born 6 June 1944, Tilsit, East Prussia (now Sovetsk, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia) - died 20 January 2015, Vienna, Austria). Father of Jerome Froese.
He began his musical career in 1965 with a short-lived rock group known as The Ones. After the group's disbandment in 1967, Froese then co-founded Tangerine Dream within the same year. After decades, and a myriad of compositions, Froese remained the only original member of the band. He was married to Monique Froese from 1970 until her death in 2000; he later married Bianca Acquaye.

Most of my playlists are not organized & just hold songs I'm interested in, many of which I haven't listened to yet. The "freeform current listening" playlist is as it says & will be updated regularly. Many of my reposts were unintentional, they were just random tracks I was trying to add to a playlist using my phone & I've got clumsy fingers.

DJ Spector lives in Athens Greece. He has been DJing for several years at some of Athens hippiest clubs and bars such as Xorostasio, Mosaiko, Fouar, Tiki Bar,Finca Vigia, Ippitou,Drunk Sinatra, The Dude Bar , The Gin Joint, ,Noel, Circus, Soul , Ginger Ale and many others.
He has also a radio show Monday to Friday night  from midnight  to 2 at Radio Pepper 96.6 , one of Athens leading radio stations.
