this is the second mix in a series 'trust me i was there' - the music in this mix is what was getting played in the places with a more relaxed door policy (places that would let in 15-16 year olds) and on the london pirate dance radio stations in 1988.

one thing i find interesting about this year (as a producer) is the contrast between the really raw acid stuff and the super slick vocal tracks - one of which was exec produced by quincy jones no less!!

On Saturday 15th October 2005, Top Buzz returned to The Sanctuary (formerly The Institute) in Birmingham after a 10+ year absence from the legendary venue and performed a 2 hour set. 
It was fantastic to deal with Top Buzz as promoters, they were so pleasant to work with. 

RIP Jason Kaye, we still can't believe it. Absolute gentleman.

On Saturday 6th September Manchesters longest running clubnight Tangled closed its doors after 21 years of providing the clubbers of Manchester with a hedonistic soundtrack to rave to on a regular basis. This mix is not the live recording but very similar to the set that was played last in the breaks room from 2.30am - 4am. All the tunes are the same, just a few in a different order due to memory loss. Myself and Tangled Breaks resident Nick Dent went back 2 back for the first hour with myself playing the last half hour. The music was amazing and the atmosphere was electric and ecstatic. Classic breaks anthems from over the years at Tangled. Tune after tune after tune... Tune in, Turn it up, Have it large one last Tangled time!! .... until the reunion in a few years :)

Utah Saints Live Club Mix October 2015

After the success of 'Not Forgotten' in 1992, Neil Barnes & Paul Daley decided to part ways with Outer Rhythm Records to form their own label - Hard Hands Records. 

During the early to mid 1990's Hard Hands released a brutal stream of Progressive House, Techno, Breakbeat and Dub music that had one thing in common... Bowl rumbling bass lines and solid as fuck production. Artists on the label included Vinyl Blair, Delta Lady, Dee Patten, Acorn Arts, Flammable and of course the mighty Leftfield themselves. The label used Zoom Records (owned by Billy Nasty, a.k.a. Vinyl Blair) in Camden as it's artistic hub, also a stones throw from Leftfield's recording studio. Zoom was THE place to shop in London if you were into the tougher sound of club land at the time. 

This mix features some of my personal Progressive House favorites from Hard Hands over the years, all chugging along at a healthy 130 BPM.

As always, I mixed this on two Technics 1210's with an Allen & Heath Xone 22 mixer.

Considered one of the pioneers of the Nu Skool Breaks sound and an innovative person in trying out new sounds Adam Freeland had many a hit back in the day specially with on his own label Marine Parade with which he promoted other top Breaks acts in the early 2000's. Steve Thorpe started mixing tunes at home when he was 18 and first started DJingin Manchesters bars and clubs in 1996. Playing an eclectic mix of broken beats. In 1997, Steve joined Manchester clubnight - Tangled and turned the upstairs chillout room of a house and trance night into the longest running breakbeat night in the UK...if not the world - Tangled Breaks. Running weekly, then twice monthly and then quarterly for over 15 years and then returning 3 times a year until it ended on Tangleds 21st Birthday in 2014. Steve has warmed up and played alongside all the best breaks DJs and producers in the UK. After Tangled stopped regular events in 2008 he started his own night - Carry On which after 14 months then changed into Lowdown and Dirty... which now after 6 was voted the best breaks clubnight in Manchester and the world as it has won the 'best small event' at the Breakspoll International awards for 3 years running and Lowdown won the coveted City Life 'best clubnight in Manchester' award for 2014. Lowdown has now come to an end but Steve has been DJing at various events and festivals around the UK and helping out with other clubnights, continuing producing mixes and live streams. Steve will also be bringing Tangled back one the UK is back to normal after Covid for a special one-off party!
