The 10th release of katharsis is the album “Matter Out Of Place” by Merdh Laleh, which will come out on April 15th. It will be the first physical release of the label, manufactured in an edition of 49 cassette tapes. Behind the Merdh Laleh moniker is the Copenhagen-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Valdemar Kragelund, who released his debut album “Water For Your Eyes” in 2019 on the danish label Petrola 80.

This second release of the artist is a collection of tracks and sketches made from vastly different perspectives and in divergent conditions, but which peculiarly made sense when put together in the context of the album. Consequently, the album seems to be a reflection on things that do not fit into a context. Themes of ostracism, the socially disadvantaged, shattered dreams and a lack of hope permeates the sonic atmospheres with deviating glimpses of serene and nostalgic
memories framed in sound.

The artist, who besides his Merdh Laleh moniker functions as one third of the experimental jazz trio Køs and as the keyboardist in the dark theatral rock band Josiah Konder, weaves together arcane synth-melodies with eerie vocals and hallowed saxophones to a veil of unsound laments. With katharsis-founder jjjacob contributing with the artwork and mastering, “Matter Out Of Place” sends the listener on a delirious journey, trying to understand the metaphysics of being the missing piece in a puzzle within a context you are not aware of.

Ziúr’s music has always been difficult to classify. A longtime fixture in Berlin’s nightlife, the musician, producer and DJ has cut through decades of threads to arrive on a sound that accurately represents her journey. She’s sung, played guitar and drums and reduced club music to a burning cinder; with “Antifate”, her third album under the Ziúr moniker, she approaches electronic music without any preciousness or reverence to genre.
2019’s acclaimed “ATØ” re-introduced songs to her canon, contorting her vocals over an undulating electronic backdrop. On “Antifate”, she takes this idea further, pushing abstracted pop forms into mists of digital euphoria and extracting unexpected instrumental flourishes from collapsing clouds of distorted rhythm. Electronic instrumentation is melted into acoustic sounds and vice-versa, creating a breathing organic universe that’s entirely Ziúr’s.

“Antifate” is an abstract reference to the mythical land of Cockaigne, a utopia where wine flows freely and houses are made of cake, that provided escapist fantasy for medieval peasants. As the space between our private worlds widens, this fantasy becomes alluring once more - a place where we feel free, with the people who allow us that freedom. With this in mind, Ziúr crafts a soundtrack that’s fantastical and magical, hinged on the idea of closeness and connection at a time when distance is mandatory.

Ghostly voices echo wordlessly over clattering beats and dubwise bass on opener ‘Alive, Unless?’, while the album’s title track sings a more epic fanfare, with a chorus of voices echoing into glittering synthesizer pearls and volcanic kicks. “Antifate” is almost even theatrical at times, something never more evident than on the Talk Talk-esque ‘Fringe Casual’ with its dreamy piano and plucked bass and on closing track ‘The Carry’, where flute is introduced into Ziúr’s rapidly expanding narrative.

It’s tempting to say that this is the album Ziúr has been destined to make, but “Antifate” rejects this concept. Rather, this is the album that Ziúr needed to make now, surrounded by the people that have been able to offer her the place to do it. In mapping out her mythical paradise, Ziúr has produced an album that is deeply tender and inescapably human. It’s an album about freedom, and she has never sounded so free.

With Assembler, his second full-length album, Yen Tech re emerges in ecstatic and primordial new form -- a multi-layered and interwoven work that blends futuristic production, meta-science fiction, and anthropic critique into a dizzying array of next scenarios -- a maze-like vision of our technological and exponentially oracular, full-stack future.

This imagined future becomes a construct or place in itself; one in which the record buzzes and swarms; a mechanosphere of towering melodic vocal samples and sound design - all narrated by Yen Tech's unnerving, diaristic vocals - as he channels the form of post-human techno cretin, whispering hyperbolic ASMR to no one in particular. We follow this character from one disorienting experience to the next as he recites a stream of indecipherable neologisms and hyper-descriptives, the existential residue seeping from every line. In the end though, a strange, uneasy beauty comes into focus; the metamorphic lyrics and musical euphorias revealing Assembler as a type of elegy: a wet glass reflection of the failures of what we are and were - and a jubilant celebration of what we may become.

"I imagined Assembler as a type of self imposed simulation, an invisible boundary that the narrator has to navigate out of to move forward. It was a way of looking at how we may carry the issues and failures of the past with us into the future. The psychological baggage of history, the guilt of geotrauma, the addictive melange of technology all become dealt with in this stage of acceptance and recovery. DRONE OPERATØR puts 9 nasty people a room and locks the door from the inside. Immediately the key breaks off and loud music starts. 'BØLTS: 00-99' collects a series of like-minded, hard hitting and rock-bass centered, stop-and-go free jazz hybrids that were created between 2017 and 2019. While drums and bass thunder like jackhammers on top of the skull, the other instruments - the saxophones and pianos - run between them screaming and giggling. There is subtile moments amidst all the stomping able to tame the dullards and diminish the headache. They make 'BØLTS: 00-99' a wrecking ball on a silk thread.
