An amazing record recently landed in my post office box, an absolute classic of an album I honestly never thought I’d see in person let alone get a copy of: Winston Mankunku Ngozi’s quartet masterpiece “Yakhal Inkomo” - I insist everyone at least take a listen to this on Spotify or elsewhere. On this episode I've included the title track to start off the set. Originally this song was called something like Darwin in respect to darwin awards and people doing stupid shit so confidently. Stupid shit is super subjective, but in my opinion, here's a few things I consider to be pretty low on the intellectual scale. Production wise, I wanted a tune i could bump to in the car without getting nauseatingly pumped by adrenaline. Djanzy - Spiritual Blue (A Deep Grooving World Jazz Joint / 2023_04)

„Unsere stärkste Waffe ist unsere Stimme. [...]“ sagte die afgahnische Sängerin und Frauen- und Menschenrechtsaktivistin Sonita Alizadeh in einem Interview mit Deutschlandfunk Kultur im Jahr 2021. Daran angelehnt und an den Satz des iranischen Rappers Toomaj Salehi „Unser Schwert ist Liebe“ und dem gleichnamigen Buchtitel von Gilda Sahebi: „Unser Schwert ist Liebe. Die feministische Revolte im Iran“, ist die Idee für dieses Set entstanden.
Sprache ist schon immer ein Ausdrucksmedium gewesen, um über eigene und gesellschaftliche Themen zu sprechen. Die Lieder in diesem Set setzen sich inhaltlich mit politischen und gesellschaftlichen Themen auseinander und kritisieren autokratische und korrupte Regime. Es geht um Gleichberechtigung, Gewalt an Mädchen*, Frauen* und FLINTA-Personen, Kinderehe, sexualisierte Gewalt, soziale Ungerechtigkeit, Unterdrückung, Diskriminierung und strukturellen Rassismus. Die Musiker:innen nutzen ihre Stimme um über genau diese Missstände aufzuklären. 
Die Lieder sind überwiegend von weiblichen Musikerinnen, da es z.T. Frauen und Queers noch heute in manchen Ländern verboten ist, öffentlich zu singen. Ebenso entstanden manche Produktionen unter erschwerten Bedingungen und hatten Inhaftierung zur Folge, wie z.B. bei Toomaj Salehi, der seit Oktober letzten Jahres im Iran inhaftiert ist. 
Um diesen Musiker:innen eine Plattform zu bieten ist das Set entstanden. 
Es hat nicht den Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit, sondern möchte einen musikalischen Beitrag dazu leisten, Aufmerksamkeit auf die Künstler:innen zu lenken, die in den gängigen Radiosendungen kaum gespielt werden und die in ihren Herkunftsländern nur unter erschwerten Bedingungen Musik machen können. Oder nur vom Exil aus. 
„Die Musik hat mich stark gemacht. Sie hat mir geholfen, selbstbewusster zu werden. Und ich will, dass sie auch anderen Frauen hilft.“ (Neue Zürcher Zeitung: 28.12.2018) sagte die iranische Sängerin und Frauenrechtsaktivistin Faravaz Farvardin. Sie hat vor einigen Jahren die Initiative „The Right to Sing“ ins Leben gerufen, ein Verein, der sich für das Recht der iranischen Frauen einsetzt, öffentlich zu singen.

It was rumored that invited guests including Donald Byrd on trumpet, Joe Farrell on tenor sax, Fred Wesley on trombone, Herbie Hancock on second keyboard, Billy Cobham on second drum-sets, Al Green lead male vocal, Nina Simone lead female vocal and Hot Buttered Soul Unlimited background vocal in addition to this live session! Shit didn't happen as venue promoters were low on cash plus potential legal challenges amongst records labels...etc, it would have been a f**king awesome session! 😉

Seriously😉, I was there with few crates full of Jazz Funk records hoping for a 2 hours after party DJ gig but shit didn't happen when studio, records label executives, venue promoters asked me same question "WTF do I know about Jazz Funk?" Besides all, bouncers said I was little too young to be inside the club & you know the rest of the story! To top it off, Mum said Jazz Funk was accountable for my Vodka, Lucky Strike non-filter cigarettes consumption and the use of made in U.S.A Zippo cigarettes lighter at my early age! 😉

Mixing, mastering notes: Raw 24/96 digital audio files continuously mixed using Sony Acid Pro 7 (without beats mapping and EQs involved = Spinning records on turntables without pitch, tempo controls and no DJ mixer)😱 
Final mix mastered with several different mastering specs for different listening environments! This version was specifically mastered for my car reference audio system and I hope it'll work with yours! Happy listening!

Ain't Enough Jazz Phunk For Catz! (see description)

Ambient sitar & tabla music, loosely inspired by the classic Dixieland standard, 'Tiger Rag' (well, only the name really).

It's another older track, maybe from late 1999 or so. The sound quality of the tape recording is not that great, but I more recently (in 2022) added a bit of reverb effects in a few parts to punch it up a bit.

I remember when I was first working on this, I started with the tabla drum pattern and tampura drone, which I liked so much, I left it playing all night and woke up to it the next morning and pretty easily came up with the main sitar theme. Maybe the drums inspired something in a dream, who knows...

Only Hi, Mid, Low freqs EQ knobs used for fading (in/out)and filters used several times, calculator used for beats calculation to achieve precise launched point! Same method previously used in my vinyls days when Rane MP 24 Club Mixer hit the market in mid 80's!

Originally released in March 2006 and virtually impossible to procure on vinyl ever since, BBE are excited to announce a special ten year anniversary edition of the classic Visioneers album Dirty Old Hip Hop. Brainchild of 4hero and Reinforced Records founder Marc Mac, the Visioneers project first appeared on a series of limited edition 7” vinyl releases. Marc began re-imagining his favourite hip hop beats from the golden era, retaining the feel of those extended, looping grooves whilst also re-introducing the excitement and musicianship of the records from which they were sampled: ‘Dirty Old Hip Hop’ was born. Drawing on the musical talents of Somatik and drummer Luke Parkhouse, both regulars on the 4hero sessions, this largely instrumental album also featured stunning performances from rappers Capitol A and Voice. An artist who was introduced to jazz music by his favourite hip hop beat-makers, ‘Dirty Old Hip Hop’ serves as a loving tribute to both art-forms, weaving the two together until even the most ardent purist will find it hard to define any space between. Dirty Old Hip Hop was shortlisted for Gilles Peterson‘s coveted Worldwide album of the Year award in 2006.
