I hope you're ready for a slice of sun-drenched, peak-time bliss because this week for the Sunset Lovers, Berlin-based producer, DJ, label manager, and teacher well-known as Noema takes you on a fantastic journey through the untamed wilderness of Balearic Beat, featuring hidden Gems and golden classics.

Looking back at more than two and a half decades of DJing, Noema is a true master at the decks. Constantly refining his craft during a former 10-year residency at the legendary Berlin Club institution Wilde Renate, Noema developed a unique style and nothing short of impressive abilities.
By combining profound selections, fascinating dramaturges, and exceptional mixing skills, his DJ sets take the audience to ecstatic highs beyond their wildest imagination.

Noema's career as a producer and label owner started with a bang when he released his very first record, the African Shakedown EP. His edit of Ata Kak ‘Daa Nyinaa’, a stone-cold fox of an anthem, became a massive hit instantly. The record was considered one of the hottest records of 2013 by FACT Mag and was on heavy rotation with Soul Clap, Axel Boman, TEED, Erol Alkan, and Psychemagik...

In his studio work, he has released six very well-received EPs as well as collaborated with electronic music heavyweights like Dj Dixon, Daniel Wang, Sabo and Grammy winners Basement Jaxx.

In the winter of 2023, Noema released his debut Album, which is part of his comprehensive art piece called ''ONE''. The piece is an ''Interactive Performance Installation'' and gives testimony of Noema's holistic artistic vision and abilities. 

The original album is accompanied by two remix EPs featuring artists like Lauer, Kalabrese, Mehmet Aslan, Shubostar, Panthera Krause, Lovefingers, Kelpe, and Nicola Noir.

It is impossible to categorize Noema's sound in common genre terms. Without borders, he creates his very own and truly unique blueprint of contemporary club music. His eclectic music selection flows freely between all kinds of electronic music. Between Downtempo and House Music, he adds Brazilian tunes, Turkish edits, Disco jams, Balearic rides, Folk-Rock, Pop, Jazz, and everything he finds worth sharing. Noema's aim as a DJ is to find the perfect soundtrack for the moment, may it be a dark Berlin basement in winter or a day party at the beach in Mexico. Mostly psychedelic and always soulful, sensual, surprising, rich in percussion, and ranging from a good old rave to groovy beach vibes, his sets are always unique and tailor-made for the occasion.

On his regular tours, he plays shows in London, Amsterdam, New York, Los Angeles, Tulum, Sao Paulo, Paris, Istanbul, Moscow, Ibiza, Mykonos and many more places all around the world.

Through his strong affinity to slow grooves and contemporary electronic music from South America, he developed the „Cozmico“ concept, which connects the „new“ downbeat scene around artists like Voodoohop, Nicola Cruz, and himself to Cosmic and Afro Style of DJs like Daniele Baldelli and Beppe Loda. 

Furthermore, Noema is the co-founder, artistic director, and A&R of The Magic Movement label, home of artists like Oceanvs Orientalis, Nicola Cruz, Xique-Xique, Crussen, Dreems, Luca Musto, Yor Kultura etc. Founded in 2013, it was one of the first labels that supported the new downbeat scene. The focus of the label lies on all kinds of percussive and psychedelic dance music.

After an application for an open call I was invited to play the opening of the charity event Sektgarten hosted by the lovely crew of blank with benefits. Absolutely enjoyed the early evening slot in the most beautiful club garden I know, playing some groovy, dubby, deep and soft tunes to sit and drink.

On this note: Love it when there are open calls for artists. It is how my journey started and I continued doing it as a host/booker, always brought the best connections.

The Afro disco series African Shaketown is back with four outstanding remixes and edits of ultra rare gems that without a doubt will make your summer move.

David Benjamin (Noema, Magic Jams) is a DJ, producer, guitarist, and label head from Berlin. You may remember Noema's legendary tribute edit of Ata Kak's ‘Daa Nyinaa’ and the wicked re-rubs of Eddie C, Axel Boman and Soft Rocks. He has released and worked with Apparat, Dj Dixon, and Basement Jaxx as well as underground heroes Lauer, Kalabrese, Shubostar, O/Y, Acid Pauli, Auntie Flo, Dreems, Khidja, Panthera Krause and Mehmet Aslan. 

Over 25 years of DJing, he has mastered the ones and twos refining his craft during his 10-year residency at Berlin institution Wilde Renate. While Noema focuses on contemporary electronica and leans towards the psychedelic, Magic Jams has a more acoustic sound inspired by dusty crate digging, the African diaspora, cosmic disco, and Balearic beats. David also runs the Magic Movement label and has released music by artists like Nicola Cruz, Xique Xique, Dengue Dengue Dengue, Soft Rocks, Carrot Green, Acid Pauli and many more

On this killer vinyl only release you’ll find two funky disco weapons on the A, played with a full band set-up and reworked by Magic Jams, while on the flip, Noema presents a more cosmic disco drop featuring dazzling synths and some delectable drum programming.

3 QUESTIONS to BONJOUR BEN

Q: Talking about your mix. Your roots are full of atmospheres, pads, not the usual 4/4 beat. What made this music so interesting for you?

A: Thank you. HOW I MET THE BASS was the reason to try something new from the technical side of mixing. It was a lot of fun because it was the first time ever I recorded a mix with 3 different medias. I checked my first electronic tracks in my iTunes playlist, which vinyl records I ordered on decks.de or discogs.com and which fitting CD may be around too. Then I was surprised that most of my music collection was really melancholic and calm. No Techno, no Minimal, no Tech-House - even more Ambient, Electronica and Deep House.

Q: You´re from the northern part of Germany. How did you get in touch with the club scene once and how does it still feel for you?

A: My first experiences in clubbing in my hometown Rostock have been at MS Stubnitz, the good old JAZ and the "Machbar" events. My first gig ever was in Rostock (Club Zwischenbau) and the first events I was involved in as promoter was with the Meerblick Kollektiv. A huge experience that I won´t miss and makes me smile when I remember the good old times. On the other hand I´m living and working here for 11 years now, that has a big impact on my daily doings. And there is a lot of good things going on here. On the other hand I´m really critical with the area around here. Our world is big, colored and nice, we should never forget about that, doesnt matter where you live.

Q: Which future projects and releases are coming soon?

A: Besides having upcoming gigs in Tenerifa, Hamburg, Berlin and recording podcasts for different blogs I´m going to focus on becoming a more professional artist. That means becoming part of a label and an agency as all my recent things have been done on my own. On one side that will give you a lot of freedom and you´re always in direct touch with the promoters but on the other hand that becomes more and more stressful from time to time, especially when its about playing gigs outside of Germany or by having problems in handling Facebook, WhatsApp etc. I´m on the point now that I really need a helping hand and I hope that will take me further.
