We continue to spread balearic love and sunset vibes with my fantastic guests and their mixes. So this week happy to share another outstanding selection from a real music lover and DJ from North Devon UK, DJ Steve Optix.


Steve Optix has been playing tunes in front of unsuspecting party people and sun lovers, in the UK and abroad, since ’93! Traversing genres from electro to downtempo, dub to disco, trip-hop to boogie, and techno to funk, Steve enjoys dropping a few curve balls and putting some ‘alts’ out there for the listening public.

Keeping it Balearic these days, with guest spots spinning other genres scattered throughout, Steve’s currently running regular events throughout the summer months under his North Devon Balearic Society banner, regularly dropping eight-hour sets.
 In recent years he’s built up his Amkucha brand via a weekly radio show on Kane 103.7 FM. He has also been responsible for the all-day Vinyl Lab charity events, and Parents Evening nights re-visiting the Summer of Love. 

Regularly asked 'what sort of music do you play?' he sums it up in four words - Balearic, Eclectic, Disco, and Edits! 

Some personal highlights from the last few years include playing Pikes, Ibiza, Word of Mouth Café - Ibiza, Spiritland Kings Cross, Let's Love Life festival, On the Terrace @ Sandy Cove, the Sun Deck in Margate, Number 90 in Hackney, the Vortex Jazz Club, Lligwy Beach Café, Red Light Radio - Amsterdam, and Cafe Belgique.

Mix of the Week #201: Plastic Fantastic

Walking to Red Light Records is a trip in itself. The streets seem to growl as open mouthed tourists jostle with indifferent locals and shop windows proudly display the biggest dildos you can venture to imagine, the air is thickly scented with indicas and sativas. The velvet curtained doors are either closed for privacy or open for business, all enveloped by the ever present red glow. 

Next door to Amsterdam’s oldest building, the Oude Kerk, you will find Red Light Records. When inside much beauty will unfold, as your ears are treated to the most discerning sounds for your listening pleasure. 

This selection tries to capture the feeling of going on a trip to Red Light Records, featuring some favourite finds picked up in the shop over the years.
