Fresh from the six person strong spiritual jazz band extravaganza of 2017’s warmly received album The Animal Spirits, synth wizard James Holden offers up yet another addition to his archive: an album of solo synth work written to accompany the critically-acclaimed documentary A Cambodian Spring, which following international film festival success, a programme of UK-wide screenings and a near worldwide slot on MUBI is currently available to buy on DVD, Blu-Ray, download and stream. Standing in contrast to Holden’s recent impulse towards live collaboration (which as well as his newly-expanded touring band The Animal Spirits has also encompassed collaborations with Moroccan Maalems Mahmoud and Houssam Guinia and tabla player Camilo Tirado), the UK electronic stalwart’s first film soundtrack is a solo studio affair, drawing on his favourite go-to analogue instruments to showcase the many sides of his diverse musical leanings throughout fourteen tracks of pulsing melancholy, foreboding drone and even the occasional burst of beatless trance.

The starting point for the soundtrack was the emotive ‘Self-Playing Schmaltz’, the closing track of Holden’s 2013 album The Inheritors, which documentary director Chris Kelly had used in an early rough cut to soundtrack what would eventually become the shocking and dramatic denouement of the whole film. Holden’s haunting, decaying synth lines seemed to line up perfectly with the fraught images of a community in breakdown, and it was this serendipity that prompted Kelly to invite Holden to work on a whole new original soundtrack for the rest of the film. The signature Prophet 600 sound palette which dominated The Inheritors also features heavily here, supplemented by a cranky old Hammond organ which was inadvertently sacrificed to the cause when the ominous rumbles coaxed out during the three-part ‘Disintegration Drone’ turned out to be the sound of the aged machine’s internal speaker cone tearing itself to bits (thus neatly mirroring the on-screen disintegration of Cambodian society during the post-election Cambodian Spring uprising). But the musical highlight here is undoubtedly the soaring, uplifting arpeggios of the ‘Solidarity Theme’, where trance functions as the international musical language of solidarity to accompany the moment that land rights campaigners Srey Pov and Tep Vanny are freed from prison, a rare glimpse of hope set against what is an otherwise rather sombre narrative as we watch the forces of international development inexorably destroy the homes and community of the Boeung Kak lakeside area in Phnomh Penh.

Holden’s first foray into the world of film soundtrack is certainly powerful and arresting when viewed in context, set against the striking collection of images assembled by A Cambodian Spring director Chris Kelly to produce a number of genuinely emotive moments, both tragic and uplifting. But as a stand alone album release it also has much to offer, with cleansing, contemplative drone and euphoric melodies alike. When viewed chronologically, Holden’s desire to engage with a broad spectrum of electronic music may mean that his back catalogue can occasionally appear somewhat schizophrenic, but in the case of A Cambodian Spring the epic documentary format and the wide-ranging human emotions on display here provide the perfect format for Holden to showcase the full breadth of his musical tastes.

Flat Earthers seem to have been making a comeback with the advent of the internet peaking in the mid 1990s. While most people dropped this belief in the 1300s it has seen a resurgence, with a rise in membership.
These are clearly people who do not 'Believe in Rock.' Cannibal Ink are at the heart of this EP from Days of Being Wild, however, everyone's favourite Italian American Luca Venezia AKA Curses gets in on the act... as if that was not enough, Disco Halal and Multi Culti signed double act Simple Symmetry have his the remix duties, which turn a rockabilly original into a high octane disco classic which quite possibly feels more love than Moroder and Summer.
What was a guitar from the original becomes a droney timestretched blanket coated in toms and yet more guitar and a little bit more guitar thrown in for good measure. 
Days of Being Wild has been around for a number of years now and has been played by the likes of Chloe, Daniel Avery, Red Axes, Damian Lazarus and countless other top DJs. With Cannibal Ink splitting to go their separate ways, this label is the perfect place to bow out, with the perfect people to help them in Luca, Sasha and Sergey.

PREMIERE | Cannibal Ink & Curses - Believe In Rock (Simple Symmetry Remix) [Days Of Being Wild] 2018

Brainchild of Multi Culti A&R, Sascha Funke and Niklas Wandt were introduced by Dreems, who charted a course for the seasoned Berlin-based producer and funky multi-percussionist and singer. 

Wandt was just about to enter the scene forcefully with his collaborative 2LP with Wolf Müller and the debut single of his band Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge. In the icey cold of his warehouse rehearsal space, Funke had him record a variety of slapped, bowed and scratched percussions (congas, talking drum, prepared cymbals played with a bass bow) over his tracks. These first efforts were later expanded into joint sessions at Sascha's home studio and, within a few weeks, the journey reached it’s destination: Wibe strasse, Deutschland.

At first glance, they seem an odd couple: a techno veteran of almost thirty years meets a side-burned upstart socialized in Free Jazz and Krautrock. but the shared sonic influences come through in the hypnotic, dubbed-out sound, perhaps rooted in the close connection the two share to the Rheinland region in West Germany, Funke as part of the Kompakt family and Wandt by origin and socialization in the Cologne and Düsseldorf music scene centered around the Salon des Amateurs. Regional flavours, global appeal. Multi Culti, promoting local collaboration, one freaky record at a time.

It's hard to even know whether to talk in the first, second, or even third person, such as the depth of blankness in the soul... Such as the Depth of Haze. 
Optimo affiliate and Night of the Jaguar honcho Mr TC makes a splash on Hard Fist for their first release of 2019 and Khidja has managed to get his hands on the stems starting the year with a bang!
Gay Haze boasts heady live bass and flute are the elements which Khidja have brought out of the awesome original which punctuate the eastern vibe which slowly builds as the faint hiss of vocal haunts the back channels. As the track builds so does the hiss and the echo and the menace and the sense of dread and urgency. 
Andrei Rusu and Florentin Tudor have had an exceptional 2018 as has Thomas Lea Clarke, and this is the dream start to the next year... no time to reflect, no time to make resolutions. Here we go again!

ZOMBIES IN MIAMI: Well... I (Cani) found it long time ago, it was around 98 with my cousin Carlos in Mexico. It's one of my favs... I was trying to do my first edit with a Mano Negra song. Here is the result.

HRDF: What would you do if you weren’t making music?
ZOMBIES IN MIAMI: (Jenouise) I could be involved in administration or something in a office. (Cani) Would be awesome to be a professional golfer haha.

When we say 'new' this is a track which has existed in some shape or form for a decade, a production from Hugo Capablanca and Oklo Gabon was reportedly rejected from a label for being too weird.  A decade on Marc Piñol heard the track, was blown away by it and asked Hugo to remix it.
The result is a shonky New York influenced lo intensity houser chock full of live instrumentation.  Bongos, sax, flute and freejazz which would not sound out of place in a Kenny Dope or Louie Vega set, think Nu Yorcian Soul remade in the Catalan and you are somewhere near close, but not close enough. 
Do yourself a favour, hit play melt away.

For its newest record, Public Release soars over the Atlantic and glides into Greece to convene with two brothers from Thessaloniki, Christos and Fotis Papadakis, for Cosmic Swimmer, a gentle, lilting sunbleached house escapade.

The 12-inch opens with their soft and cushy original mix of “Cosmic Swimmer”, a charmed layer cake of round, full-bodied hand drums, airy pads, and washed-out vocal harmonies. A breezy, wide-open endless groove that ambles along at a not-too-slow, not-too-fast Goldilocks pace that will easily keep you undulating on the floor or in your head. Another pair of brothers, the Soulwax boys, making a very rare, celebrated appearance here, take the reigns and fill out the arrangement by wrapping it all up in some stone-cathedral euphoric resonance and injecting it with their trademark finger-plucked bass struts. One of their top remixes ever? Perhaps.

The hot potato is then passed to New York City’s Kim Ann Foxman for her take, a more urgent and pressed affair that swaps the organic elements for jittery programmed percussion, strobed effects, and brittle synth licks, all the while somehow keeping the dusting of Balearic feel-good presence intact. Finally, Eric “Dr. Dunks” Duncan jumps into the frame with a tough love acid- flecked interpretation that thrusts the record into peak-hour rave territories.

For the digital edition, a bonus is offered, a peppy, saucy Hi-NRG piano number that has echoes of late-80s New Order. A carefree, cheeky encore that caps off the party with a bolt of electricity.

Damon Jee - Ride Alone [Correspondant]

@TheusMago is back with more club heat on his own co-run @Durolabel , this time in collaboration with the @LocalSuicide duo.

Theus Mago is the alter-ego of established Mexican producer Mateo González. Responsible for projects such as Bufi (Kitsuné/Discotexas) and Sonido Fantasma (Turbo Recordings) he has a deeply expressive, freeform sound that mixes darker moods with beautiful synths. After releasing a series of EPs inspired by Philip K. Dick’s Ubik, he now works with Berlin-based DJs and real-life couple Brax Moody (Munich) and Vamparela (Thessaloniki) who have been collaborating and making waves together since 2007. The pair has found success releasing on Canada’s My Favorite Robot Records and Multi Culti, and San Francisco's Roam.

The excellent lead single has lyrics translated from German to English as ‘Come Into The Hole’. This double entendre can be taken as the never-ending vortex of deep space, as well as the dark recesses of underground clubs, which is where the track will resonate. It has sparkling keys and droning synths laid over big rubbery kicks. Post- punk vocals bring a dark energy and slight EBM feel as the jacking percussion drives it along and gets the floor in a sweat.

Remixes come from Aera, who has recently released his own album ‘The Sound Path’ on Permanent Vacation and on the flip side @ColossioMx. The Mexican artist who recently made a debut splash with his four track EP ‘Moto’ on Calypso Records. Here he enlivens and accentuates the vocals, making for something fresh and arresting.

The Belgian-Caribbean artist proves herself to be a consummate storyteller. Sometimes patently silly, sometimes deeply introspective, Adigéry’s ever-wandering mind spins tales that are absurd and poignant and ridiculously fun. In the studio Adigéry is joined by known DEEWEE collaborator Bolis Pupul, a descendant of the first and only wave of Chinese immigration to Martinique. After matching on Tinder the pair began to explore their shared histories, resulting in heart-to-heart confessions that seep through the songs of Zandoli.

Taken from Max Cooper's album ‘One Hundred Billion Sparks’, Reflex sonically expresses the feelings of the artist to scintillating effect. On the title track squelching synths and rhythms pulse but also morph with filtered bass patterns, before intricate hats and raucous snares are introduced to climactic effect. 
DJ Tennis and Barratt join forces for the remix, transforming the forceful pulses and percussive elements of ‘Reflex’ into a lighter affair, which swells and subsides in a playful interpretation of the original.
