Born and raised in Germany up to the age of 13 before being uprooted and moved to the UK, Stephanie Sykes credits her Midlands coming of age with having instilled a deep love of electronic music in her. As well as making life-long friends in her northern milieu, it also pushed her to experiment more, and with this her creative passion quickly set her up as one of the UK’s most alluring talents. Fast-forward to today and for over a decade, she’s jumped from venue to venue with a highly developed personal sound that captivates in its 4/4 mastery. This rumbling techno has landed her a residency at Berlin staple Tresor, and gigs at a standard-issue list of big name venues in all four hemispheres. in case that didn’t suffice, she’s also got a growing number of releases to her name on publishers like BPitch, VENT, ://about blank and Tommy Four Seven’s 47 imprint. It’s techno with a simple mission, making people move. But don’t take anyone’s word for it, it’s best felt personally, and on a monster soundsystem if you can find it. "Being a part of this scene is already a political act." The longtime DJ discusses politics in dance music and Ex-Yugoslavia's dynamic anti-establishment creative culture.

Tijana Todorovic (AKA Tijana T) proudly hails from the Ex-Yugoslavian capital Belgrade. The Serbian city, alongside the territories now known as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Slovenia, were once under singular socialist rule that Tijana describes as a "utopian time" that fostered intense creativity and counter-cultural art and music. A liberal communist republic that didn't operate under the influence of the USSR, as many Eastern European countries did at that time, Yugoslavia gave birth to a dynamic, anti-establishment performance culture rooted in new wave, feminism and everything non-mainstream.

In her RA Exchange with senior producer Chloe Lula, Tijana reflects on how growing up in this environment irrevocably shaped her values and taste in music, as well as how the civil war—and Yugoslavia's subsequent fall—defined the period of intense fear and poverty that followed. In Serbia, techno and nightclubs became an energetic force for young people seeking solace, community and sociopolitical change. Tijana went on to work as a TV and radio journalist that fought vehemently against the war, and to break out as an artist beyond the Ex-Yugoslavian territory. She talks about her unlikely trajectory, her view on the intrinsic connection between politics in dance music, underdeveloped music markets, sobriety and more. Listen to the episode in full.

Vedran Hamzic a.k.a. DJ Wedran, born in Sarajevo 1983, makes his first encounter with trance music in 1997. Introduction to this branch of electronic music and trance comes through European underground artists and friends returning to post-war Sarajevo at the time. Immediately after, Wedran takes part in various projects all of which aiming at promotion of electronic music. Also, at the beginning of 1998, he starts to work in one of Sarajevo's radio stations.
He begins DJing in 1999 and so becomes the first trance DJ in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Upon establishment of the alternative Radio 3 in the beginning of 2000, Wedran gets the opportunity to share his love for trance with radio audience in Canton Sarajevo by means of the radio show entitled Trip-to-Night. So on top of becoming the first trance DJ in BiH, Wedran also becomes the author of the first radio show in BiH to promote this sound. Trip-to-Night radio show gradually wins more and more audience and that affects the increase of interest for trance among the electronic music fans. Meanwhile the New Radio 202 is launched, with its thirty-year tradition as urban youth medium, taking on Wedran's Trip-to-Night radio show, which maintains promoting trance sound on the new frequencies. The show is still broadcast with the same objective as nine years ago, constantly acquiring new fans.
DJ Wedran continues acting as organizer and co-organizer of numerous parties, as well as intensely developing his DJing skills. In 2007 and 2008 DJ Wedran performed with some of the best DJs on a scene: Christian Varela, Terry Francis, John Acquaviva, DJ Sultan, Funk D'Void, Darren Price (Underworld), Marco Bailey, Tiesto, Freemasons, Space DJz, etc. And like always stayed loyal to his roots continuing to promote various psychedelic trance sounds.
Since 1997 till today the purpose stayed the same: promotion and consolidation of the true trance culture in Sarajevo and BiH.Nowadays Wedran performs a unique combination of progressive trance &amp; tech trance sounds with many psychedelic elements.
