DJ Detox - The Past (Rory Kelly's Big Mama RMX)

Viikatory initially came on our raidar with a slick contribution to our mix series on soundcloud and is known by many for her releases with International Chrome and No Service. For those blissfully unaware of her deadly skills, she could be described stylistically as Überzone meets DJ Godfather in a space elevator heading to a rave in low earth orbit.

Invoking extraterrestrial themes on “Lesson 1”, the Belarussian beatmaker sets the tone for the release – namely trippy synths and warp-speed tempos. The track is an 808-laden power-lecture which explains “ten things you might not know about space” in deadpan
fashion while sharp percussion and icey pads zoom past you.

The title track features our very own jpeg.love with some raunchy, tongue-in-cheek verses about the myriad asses of the world (a topic we have a lot to say on). “Based on your Listening History” is Viikatory’s personal algorithm choosing this EP for you, without even invading your privacy!

“Assigned to Main Mix” represents the most raw and dark selection of the EP. High pitched vocals layered on sparse percussion make this a perfect tune to mix over anything, though it eventually rises to an intense crescendo, causing sensory overload before imploding like a dying star .

The ﬁnal cut “From 00” ﬁnishes off the EP on a mysterious and energetic wavelength with spicy 303s and spacey electronic sounds – a ﬁtting soundtrack to your turbulent re-entry after a spot of interstellar adventuring.

Currently based in Los Angeles, Wheez-ie’s illustrious style of rave is thundering and propulsive, designed to both ignite dance floors and encourage introspection. As a virtuosic mixing DJ and lifelong student, the Houston native’s music displays a deep mastery and knowledge of genre tropes, as well as innumerable ways in which he expounds upon and subverts them – folding jungle and hardcore into ghettotech and techno.

In addition to tactfully building a catalog of original music that reflects his distinctive knack for pushing boundaries, with releases on esteemed labels including THEM, Fool’s Gold, Well Rounded, and Nest HQ, he also runs his own independent label, Southern Belle Recordings. The imprint, whose inaugural release slot was blessed by the late DJ Rashad in 2014, doubles as another pathway for Wheez-ie to express support for those in the trenches alongside him, further showcasing how this music and the community it fosters is integral to his self-expression, identity and overall gratitude for being able to give back to a scene that has given him so much.

With his writing often regarded as being ahead of its time, Wheez-ie’s strengths include drawing from his breadth of musical study and practice to test his own limits as a producer, resulting in tracks that are as polished as they are unpredictable. Citing his passion for learning about the history of dance music and the different nuances behind its correlating sociology, Wheez-ie finds inspiration in those who have helped shaped respective scenes and production techniques, presenting an opportunity for impact and deeper resonation. 

Throughout his myriad of experiences in music—which have been accented by touring internationally, being accepted into the now-defunct Red Bull Music Academy and extending his CV to include mastering engineer work for a diverse clientele—Wheez-ie remains just as captivated by his craft today as he was over a decade ago. As exemplified through his dexterous DJ sets, multifarious production and in the artists he collaborates with, Wheez-ie turns to experimentation to further find his voice, helping him garner a reputation as a musician dedicated to elevating the art itself.
