What, exactly, is a selector? Dekmantel has long been determined to find out, even before the Amsterdam-based crew added an official Selectors stage to its annual summer festival in 2014. While the stage has since played host to an elite class of DJs that includes the likes of Floating Points, Mike Servito, Traxx, DJ Harvey, Ben UFO, and Donato Dozzy, to name just a few, Dekmantel came to realize that the Selectors concept needed a larger platform of its own.

As such, 2016 will see the launch of both a limited-capacity capacity festival and compilation series, both bearing the Selectors name. The compilations will come first, with Motor City Drum Ensemble, Young Marco, and Joy Orbison at the helm of the initial three chapters. These are not mix CDs; every Selectors compilation will include a collection of hand-picked, unmixed tracks personally curated by the artist.

Admittedly, drawing a line between "selectors" and mere DJs is an all-but-impossible task—it's essentially a "you know it when you see it" proposition—but it's hard to argue that Motor City Drum Ensemble (a.k.a. Danilo Plessow) doesn't tick all of the required boxes. He's been digging for records since his teenage years, and his DJing has become the stuff of legend, thanks in no small part to his head-turning sets at the last few Dekmantel festivals.

In truth, Plessow's relationship with Dekmantel dates back to the earliest days of the Motor City Drum Ensemble project, making him a natural candidate to head up the inaugural Selectors compilation. As expected, he's thrown himself into the task; selecting a want list from his collection of 15,000 records was no easy task, but getting permission for the final tracklist was even tougher.

One song in particular, Raphael Green's "Don't Mess with the Devil," required him to personally call up a church in St. Louis, Missouri. "The guy, he's a Bishop," he says. "When the Ferguson protests were happening, for example, he was on CNN explaining his thoughts on the whole thing, so he's a known public figure, but nobody really knew that he had this amazing record that was recorded in '79 or '80. His voice is just unbelievable. It's the kind of record that when I heard it the first time, I couldn't believe that there had only been like 100 copies pressed, and that this wasn't actually big."

Motor City Drum Ensemble's record bag is full of these kinds of gems, but he has no qualms about sharing a few of his secret weapons with a wider audience. "I wanted to get some of the stuff that is really, really hard to get, and make it available for younger people," he explains. "I used to be in the same situation. Back when I was 18, I would listen to a Rainer Truby mix and he would only play these $400 Brazilian records. I was like, 'Fuck, how am I ever going to be able to afford these?' I was glad when there was a reissue, and it's a bit the same with the compilation now." 

"Basically," he explains, "the approach for the compilation was, 'If I walked into a record store, what kind of compilation would I buy?' That's what I did."

Motor City Drum Ensemble's Selectors will be released in March 2016 on double vinyl, and CD formats.

Call Super never takes the safe road. The London but now Berlin based DJ and musician has carved out his own place in the landscape of electronic music. He dares to challenge his audiences to the fullest with brittle percussive chaos, off-kilter bass lines and haunted, esoteric melodies. His strength most definitely lies in his variety, both playing and producing music that draws from early Perlon bliss and bone-crushing-missile-techno. After producing one of the standout LPs of 2014 (the critically acclaimed Suzi Ecto), cooking up a Dekmantel Podcast and performing at last year’s festival, Call Super now makes his Dekmantel Records debut.

Nervous Sex Traffic’s title gets you off on the wrong foot. A nine-minute long house odyssey, Call Super wraps your head around brain warming chord progressions and an organic sub-bass that keeps on giving. Subtle, progressive, mind-blowing. Mount Grace on the other hand, draws from a clanking, industrial sound palette. Endlessly deep, spacious and dub-heavy, this electro inspired excursion teases the bass synth in slowly, but starts to go wild as the music builds up.

When we first got our hands on a cassette tape released by Dutch label Yield, we were introduced to the unique sound of @NatalZaks a.k.a. Central. Hailing from Århus, Denmark second largest city, Zaks feels closely connected to the rock, punk and experimental scene blooming in his hometown. The same DIY esthetics can be found throughout his own, idiosyncratic take on electronic music that, apart from being highly distinctive, is best to be described as incredibly versatile. 

His sterling label debut is spread out into a montage over four sides of vinyl - DKMNTL 034 & 035. Zaks deviates between the deepest, vocal tinged house of 'Keep Love On Me', via breezy breakbeats ('This Is Hand'), to the lush ambient-jam 'Longest Way Between Two Point'. On the second EP, the innocuous playfulness of 'Tubelife', the soulful and brooding 'Detour King' and the jazzy undertones of 'Politcal Dance' are colorfully-plumed dance tracks drawing on jazz-soul and deep house knitted together with impressive precession. The breadth of diversity and quality of his execution is a testament to Zaks' skill as a producer. 

Zaks: ‘‘I'd describe my sound as curious and fun club music, because it's based on curiosity and yes, having fun. I'm fascinated with many genres, styles and movements of danceable music. Generally the Central project draws inspiration from my interest for the dancefloor, whereas most of the other endeavors I work on are less crowd friendly. If you’d ask me, a lot of the very best dancefloor music was made a long time ago, so I'd say I'm very influenced by both sound, production and musicality from older records. The general idea is to make tunes that simultaneously look back- and forward in time. I think style and genre is secondary to quality and to trueness. Not trueness to a scene or whatever, but being able to do something that is a true continuation of our person(-ality).’’

Dekmantel is proud to present Danny Wolfers a.k.a. Legowelt's ambient project Occult Orientated Crime. It's for the first time ever that this moniker of the prolific Dutchman will have a physical release. Wolfers: "The OOC sound is an accumulation of twenty years of musical training and research and what effect it has on the brain. Simply put it's electronic ambient music, which is more advanced compared to the music I’m creating with my Smackos alias. OOC is deeper and more melodic, less loose and vague but perhaps more intense. It can bring the listener into a completely different state of mind, you can almost call it ritualistic neuroscience music."

The six tracks are recorded around the same time, using coherent recording techniques. "Let's say I was in a flow, or something like that. But I rather think it's the music itself that gives it a distinctive sound: the way the music was composed, the notes and the sound palette. I haven't used any sharp sounds for example, but everything is very round so your brains will soak it up as something smooth."

Apart from the track 'Just a Clown On Crack', the release lacks kick drums. "Most or nearly all music from PC doesn't have a beat because it is often unnecessary, it distracts from the melody or what should be processed in the mind of the listener. The melodies, sounds and structure itself are enough to bring the listener into a certain mindset: a beat there would almost sound cheap, tacky. 'Just a Clown On Crack' has a trip-/hip-hop feel to it and was craving for a beat. It’s also the last track of the album and, in a rather fluent way, brings the listener back to the misery and tragedy of the normal, everyday world. It’s like returning from the OCC dimension with a soft landing."
