The Netherlands has no shortage of celebrated DJs and producers, but now it is time to shine a light on one that is deserving of a much wider audience. Amsterdam’s Interstellar Funk is a young record hound and talented producer who loves real melody in his music. He releases on (and works at) Rush Hour and has put his textured sounds out on his own Tape Records label - it ranges from slow and absorbing to more urgent and physical, and his DJ sets are just as brave and far reaching. 

As a former Trouw resident, Interstellar Funk reaches far and wide for the records that make up his DJ sets. This tight one hour selection proves that as it transitions through cosmic melodic jams to corrugated electro and deep acid house. It makes for a mix that operates in a rich synth galaxy full of space dust and retro-future nostalgia. So, enjoy his absorbing mix and then get ready for his debut track on the Dekmantel label, a contribution to the Patta x Dekmantel compilation.

Born and raised in Amsterdam, KAMMA’s path to her craft could not have come more naturally. She is the child of parents who both have DJ’d professionally for over 25 years. Her instinct and open-mindedness result in sets that purvey a wide range of sounds, from disco to techno, jazz to house.

Along with DJ’ing, KAMMA is also part of the collective behind rising Amsterdam party series “Brighter Days”. A festive bi-montly get together drawing one of the city’s most up for it crowds. Here she has graced the decks with masters such as Osunlade, Mike Dunn, Ge-ology, K-Alexi and Jamie 3:26. 

Driven by a love of dreamy vibes, cosmic elements and complex rhythms, her sound is defined by an effortless contrast of sounds, energy and emotions.

Ahead of our Community Connections series, we touched base with Cooper Saver & Jen Ferrer, who run Far Away in Los Angeles. The crew are responsible for bringing Four Tet, Floating Points, Palms Trax and more through Los Angeles’ warehouse circuit. Friday 1st December we’ll be teaming up with them for a throw down at El Cid. $5, and unannounced guests, see you front left.

1. How would you describe your music policy?
Our policy is less about genres or styles and more about encouraging guests to have fun and let loose. 

2. What makes a great party? 
A comfortable room with everyone attending on the same page - an encouraging, open minded dance floor.

3. What does your party stand for, and how do you express that? 
It stands for freedom of expression - for the party goers and also the DJs. Our goal has always been to bring our favorite artists to play intimate and unusual spots, which allows them to offer a more personal set and give the dancers something special and unique. 

4. What’s the greatest problem facing club culture in your city? 
2am cutoff in legal venues, high costs of permitting events, and lack of good venues that cater to dance music specifically. 

5. What’s your favourite memory of the night?
Cooper: It's hard to pick a number 1 favorite memory, they're all special and I learn a lot from each. I think the best memories are not only the amazing all nighters, but also the time spent stuck in traffic from the airport with my favorite DJs / artists talking about whatever. I guess that's a bonus to doing parties in LA.

Jen:  I'm tearing up a little thinking about all of the amazing moments we've had over the years. Some of my fondest memories are from the early residents-only nights when we would DJ ourselves all night with friends. It was so sloppy and ridiculous and probably what I'll think back on as the best times of my 20's. There's a beautiful camaraderie in sharing a DJ booth and I learned so much about my friends, myself, and DJing in general by cutting my teeth that way.

Solid Steel (23rd March) This week, we're delighted to welcome Tama Sumo and Lakuti on Solid Steel, having just returned from gigs in South Africa. They step up with both delivering a superb mix in each hour and describe it as;
“A musical journey into spring, taking in some deepest of house cuts, afro beat, jazzy at times, gospel and beyond. Sit back and let the music move you.”

In Hour 1 it's Tama Sumo, the Berghain/Panorama Bar resident who started out in 1993. Since 2001 she also played regularly at the Dance With The Aliens party at the old OstGut, Berghain's predecessor club, which eventually opened the door to a residency at the new Panorama Bar & Berghain shortly after the club opened. She developed a varied style ranging from House, Disco, Techno, a smidgen of Detroit Electro and Pop. At the beginning of 2008, she released her first record. Both tracks, “Play Up” and “Brothers, Sisters”, have been produced in collaboration with Prosumer
Music featured in her mix includes tracks from Space Jam, Timeline, Bayara Citizens, Javonntte, Twice and Peven Everett & Stacy Kidd

Chilean DJ @paulatape learnt her craft in an after-hours club back home in Santiago, where she would crib from the residents before launching out on her own. A move to Milan led to her becoming a resident at the city's Rollover night, and now she's starting to make a name for herself with shows across Europe, playing with the likes of Young Marco, Mall Grab and Tornado Wallace. In addition to her regular show on Radio Raheem called 'Music for Plants', Paula has also appeared on Rinse FM and Red Light Radio. Enough words though - this excellent mix, which we're very grateful to Paula for recording for us - should be all the necessary introduction to this exciting DJ.

Ellie Stokes is a truly exciting Bristol-based selector, rapidly ascending from the underground with a DJ style that adds colour, variation and flavour to the retro house cuisine.

Here she comes forward with a head-spinning mix of grooves and moods, a wave of warm air peppered with sand, debris and spray. A texturally complex journey through sound.

In parts, this is a true spin of classic house.. But in more ways it's a shot through the kaleidoscope; slap bass, organic vocals, live drums, liquid analogue synths. Proper quality vibes from West Coast UK!
