“Preparing for Samhain XX was quite a surreal experience as we were heading into the dimming days of the year during the darkest times of our generations. I was asked to play a 3 hour session that listening back on reflects the powerful feelings and emotions of those anxiety ridden times. The set sort of moves through 3 parts: the first is being sucked down the rabbit-hole, the second portion moves into the chaos and disintegration, and the final section is a deep inhale/exhale and a glimmer of hope. This might be a way to approach it for those not inclined to listen to the full 3 hours. On that note it’s not all doom and gloom and I had some fun sneaking in some odd balls and a few samples in honor of All Hallows’ Eve. 

In such times of solitude and inner-reflection these special moments like Samhain XX gave us a sense of community and togetherness even though we were all worlds apart. Thanks to all involved for creating this sanctuary in the eye of the storm.”

New York City’s Veronica Vasicka very much discovered an untapped musical mine when searching for music for her radio show more than a decade ago. That mine was full of rare, overlooked and forgotten DIY synth records from the 70s and 80s and inspired her to start her own label, Minimal Wave. Since then it has become an imprint with a very focussed musical and visual identity, has spawned compilations on Peanut Butter Wolf's Stones Throw Records and has made Veronica an in demand DJ all round the world.

At those gigs, she offers up a sleek musical vision that is mirrored here in the mix she had done for our on going series.  Starting with a poignant monologue about new music, it then drops into a rugged groove that is industrial and machine made, abstract and futuristic. The ensuing hour touches on the robo-techno of Levon Vincent, terse beats and raved-up electro as well as some colourful and trippy disco. A lot is packed in, but a buffed metal sheen ties the whole thing together and subtly oozes the very essence of Minimal Wave.

The last couple of years have seen D.K. emerge at the centre of a new age, ambient laced and misty sonic sphere. Taking cues from boogie and synth pop, house and funk, the Frenchman’s subtly soothing sounds have come mostly on Antinote and sound at once nostalgic but also forward looking. Musical and lush, dreamy and balearic, it is music for warm climates and laid back moments in your life. 

And so is the mix he has put together for us: over the course of ninety minutes it takes you from the hammock to the beach bar and on to the club. Starting with the sort of smooth and serene sounds you would expect, things get crunchier and more hard hitting as you move along through prickly house, wild analogue jams and trippy four thumpers.

Another of the many standout DJs to emerge from the ever-fertile Amsterdam scene, Job Sifre is now rightfully starting to get props from outside the city. Helping him on the way is his monthly Red Light Radio show, which shows off his cosmic and electronic take on synth heavy house. He has backed that up with compelling sets at places like De School and Salon Zur Wilde Renate, as well as with a fresh new wave and house EP that was the first release on Interstellar Funk’s new label, Artificial Dance.

Job will play with us at Dekmantel Festival in August, so first offers up a snapshot of his current sound. Over the course of nearly two hours, he takes his time to go from laidback and horizontal to more upright and drum lead. The sounds are often laden with icy synths, the drums are heavyweight and the atmospheres are spooky and sci-fi. His is a truly electronic world devoid of human life and it touches on new wave, macho disco, cosmic house and prickly dub in frosty and freaky ways.

Recognise is DJ Mag’s new monthly mix series, introducing artists we love that are bursting onto the global electronic music scene. This month, we speak to an artist questioning the boundaries of what techno can be, Identified Patient.

Making rough-edged, undulating music that flirts equally with electro, EBM, acid, wave sounds, post punk and industrial, without cementing its roots firmly in any, the Amsterdam-based artist is part of a stable of DJ/producers who circulate labels like Pinkman, Mannequin, Brokntoys, L.I.E.S. Records and Common Ground. Although they all have a distinct sound from each other, Identified Patient, as well as Kris Baha, Alesssandro Adriani, Black Merlin, Raw Ambassador and countless more, all follow a similar aesthetic that’s become rife on electronic music’s more discerning dancefloors.

For his Recognise mix, Veerman delivers an hour of music that circulates the vast chasm of sound surrounding his own productions. Beginning with the eerie echoes of The Grid, before working its way through industrial clatter, downtempo acid, sinister electro, haunting vocals delivered from the depths and warped techno, it closes with the bold combination of Osynlige Mann and Alan Vega. “I wanted the mix to be somewhere between home listening and a feeling of the dancefloor,” Veerman explains of his Recognise mix. “So it flirts with both aesthetics and energies.”

Nazira is a real powerhouse. She has almost single handedly built up an electronic music scene in her native Almaty in Kazakhstan. She runs her own ZVUK nights in a range of unique settings, was responsible for bringing a one off edition of Unsound to the region in 2017, and after word spread about her skills, she has gone on to represent around Europe while hosting workshops back home that aim to grow local talents. All this is even more impressive given how far removed her hometown is from the rest of the global circuit.

As a DJ, host on Radio Cómeme and resident at Berlin’s Room 4 Resistance, Nazira brings physicality and angular rhythm to her work. For this week’s mix, she kicks off with skeletal bass and huge open spaces of futuristic ambiance before the jittery techno and industrial drum loops take over. Melodies rarely appear, instead the mood is dark, heads down, and focussed. It is the sound of an artist who is assured and uncompromising, which is a perfect reflection of the DJ behind it.
