Prophet of a boundary-pushing, borderline-abstract strain of techno, Stanislav Tolkachev has laid the foundation to a truly unique body of work. Bending the curve of linear techno’s musty grammar and its underexploited power of artistic transgression, the Ukrainian producer graced the grooves of the most high-end record labels out there, including Token Records, Modularz, Semantica, Mord and yours truly. Threading his way into our mix series with two hours of mind-expanding hardware magic involving 3 CDJs, an analogue drum machine, FX plus some analogue random modular sequencers, Tolkachev hits hard and sure, sending us in orbit up a galaxy far, far away, only he can shepherd his enlightened flock to. Flush with trippy flights out techno’s outer space and proper floor-destroying plot twists, this one promises to have you zoning out of this world entirely. Enjoy the journey.

We are proud and almost overwhelmed to present our guest for this week, Steve Bicknell(@steve-bicknell). This producer and artist has been an important figure in the UK techno scene, and in the techno world since the early nineties. 

Steve is running LOST with Sheree Rashit, the club night which is being heralded  as the most influential and respected techno event in UK, not to mention it being the most long-running one. He also has numerous releases on the label that is considered by many as legendary material up until to this day. 

After being on hold since 2005 the founders of Cosmic records ( Sheree and Steve) decided to rejuvenate the label, starting of with releasing Cosmic 035, Lost Recordings 8 featuring Steve himself. We express huge gratitude and respect to Steve for taking time to make this episode for us, and we can assure you as the listener… you are in for a HEAVY techno trip!

Charlotte de Witte is back on Sleaze Records after her outstanding debut earlier this year! Her second effort for the label features 4 quality original tracks, each bringing a different vibe, showing the variation of her production talent. The title track 'Wisdom' is the biggest of the bunch, having a huge impact in the peak moments. 'I'll See You Tonight' is more dark & driving, with a stand out vocal cut. 'Sending Them' is a stripped down, loopy groover and 'Maelstrom' rounds off the EP nicely with a pounding beat, a crazy warped vocal and hard hitting percussive elements.

Wisdom (Original Mix)

Dynamic Ukrainian producer Yan Cook makes his debut on Soma Records with the Wide Angle EP. Active on the scene for some time now and releasing on a number of top flight labels, Yan delivers a devastating 4 track EP, chalked full of his distinctive sound. 

The ominous title Wide Angle kicks things off with thumping and tripped out low end and doesnt hold back, firing straight out of the block with rapid percussion and twisted synth elements. Krater keeps up the pace with a more rolling and hypnotic feel; crushing rhythmic elements has Yan on full attack mode with this track. Blacklisted keeps up the aggressive vibes with sinister tones, growling basslines and yet more jarring and propulsive rhythms. Closing out with Red Stream, Yan continues with the malevolent vibes as dark and forbidding tones permeate throughout this perfectly crafted tool.

Yan Cook is yet another welcome addition to the ever growing roster of high quality talent on Soma.

Concrete Takeover: Stanislav Tolkachev - 7th April 2018

Stanislav Tolkachev has been turning out experimental techno for more than a decade but might never have been as prolific as he is now. Hot on the heels of an EP on Raw Waxes that brimmed with dark IDM invention, this month sees him serve up his fourth full length, It Will Be Too Late Then. It finds the Ukrainian serving up controlled machine made chaos, cavernous grooves and his trademark arpeggios across nine forward thinking tracks. 

All this and more is showcased on his podcast for us. Tolkachev’s compulsive rhythms are the foundation for what is an end of days soundtrack that takes you from the heat of a percussive battle to a charred and desolate landscape. It’s cinematic music rich in texture, blistering drums and sharp melodies that is beautiful in its brutality.

Rural is always a special event for me. Playing in the Japanese mountains in front of my friends, it means a lot. Last year I was on the Sunday night, full of stars, in between Function and Alessandro Cortini. With a 3 hour slot, I had the chance to dive deep and do what I wanted.
