Must've Been Music

This is Part 2 of my Mystery of the Motherbeat series of DJ mixes. I’ve wanted to record this mix for a long time as a follow-up to my 2018 mix by the same name. Both are a fusion of styles used to build a psychedelic hypnotic soundscape for deep listening and personal synchronization with the heart of Motherbeat. No big hands in the air moments to speak of here, just deep mixing and some of the most beautiful records in my collection. Circling back to one of my all time ride or dies, presenting @sandpit_alias for Animix one hundred and seventy one. Feels so good to have him back on this series - he was one of the first appearances which remains a favourite, and this sequel is a perfect reminder of why Aidan in such a vital figure in Naarm/Melbourne's scene. So much integrity, class and intuitive flair, no one does it like him. This instalment is a no nonense, if-you-know-you-know wave of his signature blend of banging house and techno.

Animix One Hundred & Seventy One: Sandpit Alias

Jane Fitz took the stage twice with a B2B set this at rural 2024, and she appeared on the final day with her musical partner Jade Seatle, who co-hosts the DIY party “Night Moves” in their home, London. The final day started out rainy, but ended up with sunny skies. This set was deeply connected with such a dramatic ending. Enjoy this euphoric collection of left-field tech house gems.

@eli-verveine is a musical chameleon who can do it all from banging peak time sets to pensive warm-ups via weird and wonderful hour hours sessions. She has proven that over the years in many of the scene's most cultured clubs whether playing solo, B2B as Among Trees with Andrey Pushkarev or live with Gwenan as Gin & Tonic. On top of all this, she has a well-formed discography that delves further into her versatile sounds.

This week's mix reflects her musical malleability as she draws on plenty of diverse tempos and textures to craft a lively trip. There are moments of blissful deepness next to more nuanced rhythms, futuristic bass explorations and cosmic electro sojourns that keep things moving at pace, but always with great control and expert selections.

Yamour played at our Yellow House marathon during ADE and now she’s back with an IsBurning mix. An neverending house groove for the mind & the body banging in subtleness! 

Trackhighlight Chez Damier & Makèz - „Do It“ (Adeen Records)
An uplifting deep house tune with organic percussions, a thick and bouncy bassline, buttery chords and a fun acid melody that comes in mid-track. I love the two funky disco breaks, definitely a highlight for me.
I bought this record in Japan, while I was on tour in Asia and it immediately became a staple in my record bag. 
The EP is a collaboration between Adeen and legendary Chicago label Balance. All four tracks are produced by Chez Damier and Makéz, plus a smoky remix by Mr G.

Deep Deeper Techno House

Just last month, Canadian Jex Opolis debuted on our label with a cosmic and feel good electro EP that came washed in Italo influences. It was the latest in a long line of colourful releases—largely on his own Good Timin’ label—that have explored a timeless mix of synth pop, leftfield, house and nu disco since 2013. As someone with a background playing in bands, he knows how to properly arrange a track, which always shows, and he even uses his own voice for extra layers of personalisation. 

His mix for us is a fun one: vocals ricochet around over boogie basslines, tropical percussions flails away next to glistening Casio keys and day-glo disco is never far away. House grooves take over later on and power through with more lush chords and it all makes for exactly the sort of thing you want to hear on an open-air, sun-kissed festival stage.
