In their own words, the recording draws inspiration from a whole host of locations including Iran, New York, Poland, Uganda and Bristol, with plenty more music from "all over the world; from people I appreciate a lot and that I find touching, in depth and perfect for introvert moments." Sunday Mix: Zoë Mc Pherson

Gag Reflex's moniker is an apt embodiment of her musical output. It's propulsive; pushing you forward then pulling you back, dragging you under then spitting you out.

It's down to the intriguing spread of influences that fuel the US-born, Berlin-based producer and DJ's work. While there's nods to percussive noughties techno, classic rave and early UK dubstep in there, you'll hear echoes of her formative love of punk bands like Crass and The KLF bubbling underneath the surface too.

As a DJ she's made quite the name for herself in the US, holding residencies in Portland and San Francisco, as well as her former home of Seattle, where she ran transfeminist club night BLOOM: a space to inspire connection, catharsis and experimentation within the local scene and beyond.

The connections that she's made have led to releases on international labels like Scuffed Recordings, Violet's naivety sub-label and, most recently, on the former's newly minted sister label Angel with her Lush EP, which drops on 21st April.

In the lead up to the release she takes the controls of this week's Shine A Light On mix with a blend of murky, percussive and weighty sonics for the heads down and the hands up crew...

Next up in our series of recordings live from the booth is Lee Gamble. This one's from a steamy summer night in August during which we tipped our hats to essential UK label Hyperdub in celebration of their 15th birthday. 

In between a stellar opening b2b from local rave heroes Akanbi & DJ Temporary, and leading into a serious beatdown from label boss Kode9 (that started with Burial, nonetheless), Lee Gamble's set exemplified the wild-style, distinctly UK sound the label has been pioneering for well over a decade now.

There's something in the air on special nights like these, and Gamble channeled it to his full advantage, resulting in a set that was nothing short of outrageous. It's a two hour rollercoaster through genre & tempo, spanning sub-destroying bass & grime, dubstep infusions, plenty of breaks and a hefty dose of freaky techno. Full of unpredictable twists and turns while always remaining highly danceable and exceptionally fun, Lee blew the roof off and the minds out with one of the most mental sets we've heard in our two years between the stacks. 

Big love to all steppers in the place for this one, to the Groovy Groovy crew for the support, to Lou for all the technical finesse and the Lee for the tunes.

Nowadays Live And Direct 006 - Lee Gamble

Low Jack has been bringing an accessible experimentalism to club music throughout his career. The DJ and live act from France is a firm favourite on the digital arts festival circuit with a dark, tension filled and industrial tinged sound that has landed on L.I.E.S., Les Disques De La Bretagne and Trilogy Tapes and taken him to clubs like Berghain. Next to his techno he has also recently blended digital dub, dancehall and dubstep on newly self-released EPs that break all the rules and means he remains a fascinating auteur.

His mix is the perfect way to awaken yourself from a post-festive slumber: its all bristling drums and rib rattling bass, crashing hits and broken beats that fire every synapse in your body. There are trap cuts, dark dancehall bombs and hyper speed jungle rhythms all somehow stitched together into a lively selection that covers a dizzyingly diverse spectrum of sound.
