Silent Servant - HATE Podcast 245

Originally from Paris, SOD-90 started producing alongside his studies as a flutist at the renewed university of classical music from Berlin. Combining his knowledge from a wide range of musical backgrounds with his experience as a professional instrumentalist, he crafted an intense sound, characterised by noisy textures, scorching synth lines, with distorted drums and twisted vocals. All this added to complex and dynamic arrangements.

After only a few years since he started producing, SOD-90 has already been supported by some of the biggest names on the scene and has released on Avoidant, Bipolar Disorder records, Emotional Voyage, with more in the pipeline very soon. He intends to continue exploring creative approaches to production, aiming to evolve his style towards an increasingly powerful and unconventional aesthetic.

British Murder Boys - Dogma, Edinburgh - March 2004

A true legend and pioneering figure of techno, US sound architect and Geophone label owner Mike Parker breaks in on the RYC waves with a very special set full with his idiosyncratically dark, obsessive, inch-perfectly chiselled 4x4 wares. Before Boiler Room and co. were even a thing, a pioneering platform going by the name of Studio R° used to broadcast techno sets by prominent artists from a secret location in Berlin. This iconic, vinyl-only mix is Parker’s Studio R° set from 2013, now fully remastered for your listening pleasure. Building atmospheres unlike any other, brooding and transcending in equal measure, Parker has laid the foundation to an exceptionally rich body of work. Master of the industrial vocab, peeping towards Detroit but with his defining spin on the early days genre, Parker entices us down the path of steely monumentality and laser-precise mind control. Just as typically mazy, his present mix conjures up all traits of quality Parker material: 909-powered propulsion, enslaving acid whorls, Escher-like fractals. Wild, wild ride ahead.

Back in August 2024, in the final stretch of summer, Ancient Methods b2b UVB took us on a three-hour ride to the end of time and back. A post-industrial vortex pulled us in, where deep mechanical grooves met tight rhythmic control in a set that was both punishing and hypnotic. The pacing was expertly crafted, grinding tension, explosive peaks, and moments of eerie restraint, all delivered with a raw, analog-driven energy that kept the floor locked in. American Phase Fatale is one of the residents responsible for defining the current Berghain sound. As well as regular DJ sets in the Berlin techno dungeon, his latest album, 'Scanning Backwards' — which was released on in-house label Ostgut Ton last month — was made with the cavernous club in mind. Just like his arresting DJ sets take influence from post punk, EBM and industrial, the album also looks outside techno's usual borders: snippets of speech, "brain-penetrating instrumentation" and plenty of raw textures all inform its grooves and make for a hugely visceral listen.

On this week's mix, he serves up an uncompromising set of angular rhythms, doom laden synths and fizzing techno that is perfect for the darkest dance floors out there. Importantly, there are still nuances along the way despite the pumping machismo of it all. They keep you on the edge of your seat as the dystopian drama unfolds and all consuming bleakness draws you ever deeper into a world devoid of human life forms. It's beautiful brutality from start to finish.
