Chinese-German artist @samgoku has a distinctive take on techno that draws on his own Asian heritage and blends it with contemporary electronics. Across two sublime albums for Atomnation and Permanent Vacation, he has infused his fluid rhythms with gorgeous melodies and ambient haze, traditional Eastern instruments and ethereal moods. This summer, he debuted on the Dekmantel label with four tracks of unconventional techno that marry the physical with the emotional in exceptional style.

There are plenty of similar contrasts in this week's mix, which is an almost two-hour dive into his sound world. It is a deep and compelling blend of supple rhythms that are always subtly shifting. His pristine selections take in dubby and cavernous grooves, tripped-out minimal details and stylish techno cuts that always come with plenty of colour and high-definition designs which lend the whole thing a futurist edge but very human soul.

Animix One Hundred & SIxty Nine: Human Space Machine

Resident Advisor is wrapping up 2024 with an episode dedicated solely to vinyl culture, from dubplate production to record store culture, all-vinyl DJing and running labels that release records. 

In the first part of this episode, which was recorded live at Wire Festival, panelists and vinyl DJs Mary Yuzovskaya, Clarisa Kimskii and Devoye Folkes discuss the benefits and drawbacks of playing records in the digital era. According to the panelists, playing vinyl could be seen as a skill analogous to driving stick shift: while it's not always necessary, it gives new artists a better understanding of a DJ set's underlying machinery. They also talk about how a DJ's identity used to be intertwined with their personal collection of records, and how the digital paradigm shift presents today's DJs with infinite choices. 

The Exchange's second half takes listeners behind the scenes, investigating the challenges and opportunities inherent in running a business based on vinyl sales. Live from Wall to Wall Festival at RSO, HHV Records, Bandcamp Berlin, Objects Manufacturing and Elevate Record Store speak to the overhead investment, production time and ecological considerations they take into account in their day-to-day operations. They also shed light on the statistics behind the enormous sales of vinyl records in the past few years and the breakdown of which artists are making money from digital versus physical music sales and why. @eli-verveine is a musical chameleon who can do it all from banging peak time sets to pensive warm-ups via weird and wonderful hour hours sessions. She has proven that over the years in many of the scene's most cultured clubs whether playing solo, B2B as Among Trees with Andrey Pushkarev or live with Gwenan as Gin & Tonic. On top of all this, she has a well-formed discography that delves further into her versatile sounds.

This week's mix reflects her musical malleability as she draws on plenty of diverse tempos and textures to craft a lively trip. There are moments of blissful deepness next to more nuanced rhythms, futuristic bass explorations and cosmic electro sojourns that keep things moving at pace, but always with great control and expert selections.

Another Barker masterclass.

Sam Barker asks more from techno. The artist known simply as Barker is one of electronic music's most consistently conscientious and curious producers, challenging listeners to question the norms we accept about our shared culture—whether it's the music that fills the room, the process behind it, or the purpose of the space itself.

British-born yet based in Berlin since 2007, Barker forged a connection to many of the city's leading institutions, including Ostgut Ton, and over the course of a long and fruitful relationship, he carved out one of the more singular paths on the club and label's roster.

Not one for orthodoxy, Barker challenged four-to-the-floor techno framework in favor of melodic experimentation. By decentering or completely stripping away the typical trappings of kick drums and claps, his productions are both light and immersive, buoyant in low-end presence and shimmering in weightless space.

Six years after Utility, his sophomore album Stochastic Drift arrives this month. Shaped by pandemic-driven reinvention, it burrows deeper into harmonic twists and freeform drift. "At some point I became conscious of the process," he wrote of his latest album. "The only thing you can do is embrace the uncertainty and see every change as a potential positive.”

Consider his RA Podcast another sequel. Like his much-beloved 2019 mix for FACT, it's a collage of live recordings and a fitting expression of the artist's own internal spring. RA.982 radiates wide-eyed optimism: percussion cloaked in foggy, swirling pads and trance-like chords, neatly synched in synthetic glimmers. 

All in all, it's an hour of music crafted for contemplation, collective euphoria, or heads-down epiphany—or for that matter, any moment, really, its emotive depth seemingly endless.
