1 fun fact about yourself? 

My enthusiasm for music of all kinds is appreciated by people who hear me talk about it and present it through my dj’ing. That is my little super power. It provides fun for others. I keep striving to be interesting with that as best I can. 

How is everything going with you right now?

Anxiety tries to get the best of me but I still wake up and want people to gather and dance it out, hug it out, respectfully talk it out! As a very personal and shy person, I am very restless and still want to perform in front of people again as soon as it is safe to do so. Having the opportunity to create a mix for pipipi was super helpful. I hope I can connect with your followers in making them happy with this mix. The joy in making this was very therapeutic for me. Thank you. 

Any fun predictions for 2021?

I love crystal balls and the idea of seeing beyond however I treasure the moment at hand tremendously. It’s all you got so whatever move one makes today, that action potentially creates a step forward for their better tomorrow. With that said, if all goes to plan, collectively we can boogie together sooner than much later. That is my hope :)

Who currently inspires your music-wise?

As of late, my newest obsession on the decks and studio..well...just gonna mention them all up in no particular order...Fred P, Deep Creep, Matrixxman, Sleep D, Zvrra, E-Saggila, Furtive, Prince (forever!), Roza Terenzi, Francois K and Daniel Fisher’s artistry plus attention to detail in his productions.
What was your first gig? How did it go? 

It's all getting so fuzzy. Sorry. One of the earliest gigs that stands out was in 1996, dj’ing in a bookstore on a Sunday afternoon. The party was called Turntable Jazz. Felt great to spin my downtempo & soul records to a crew who were coming down and getting blazed up surrounded by books and the smell of coffee. I want to see more of that in the scene. Dance music and DJ culture should not be limited to getting crazy in a dark room. 

Describe your favorite thing to drink and how it makes you feel?

Watermelon justice with basil or mint or both will do. It’s quite an elixir that comforts my head immediately.

Why do you think it's important to share music?

People love to know what other people do and what motivates them to do so. That curiosity is special particularly when it comes to what we enjoy in sound and how it affects our daily life. Music has always been a safe go-to place. From dancing around alone at home by yourself or surrounded by people at a party, a rise in heart rate while enjoying sound offers introspective relief. I strive to make this happen as often as possible. Sharing music is the best cosmic medicine there is. 

What do your parents think about the music you make?

My parents were party people back in the 1970s so disco and finger snapping music was always playing on the turntable and radio. They always sensed I would work in the music industry somehow so they really like seeing me having genuine fun just as I did when I was young. 

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

Less dependence on the alcohol industry. More connections with community organizations and idealism that is non corporate that are supported and suggested by attendees of dance parties. If people really want “that feeling to last” then people need to approach giving back without asking for anything in return. One idea is to not party too hard and leave the club and go straight to the streets and put trash away, help people in need get their food…. the labor of love has infinite value and impact.

Dekmantel Selectors 2021 was a much needed musical reunion. After the preceding period of stillness, the catharsis and pure joy of finally being together again has been overwhelming. In the words of Simo Cell: "It's 7pm, and I have 5 missed calls on my phone: 'We're expecting massive rain tonight and we will have to close your stage earlier, is it okay for you to play earlier?' No time to stress and to think about it. I left my place and started my set straight away. From a few people to a packed dancefloor, I built up slowly from 90bpm to 160bpm (you know the drill). Pretty happy about the progression of the set and the rise in intensity. In the end, the crowd turned into a mosh pit on XXXtentacion and I had the best time behind the decks. It's good when things sometimes happen spontaneously like that. And it didn't rain after all."

In the words of Fafi Abdel Nour: "At first, I was quite anxious about everything, but having lots of familiar faces around made me feel at ease. It has been a long time since I felt comfortable enough to dance during my own set and it's a feeling that I don't want to let go anymore! Still buzzing from it."

How is everything going with you right now?

You have no idea how much better off I would be if I could give a straightforward answer to that question. Things are as good as possible I guess, I’m very lucky to have financial stability and my own equipment to keep myself busy but at this point I’m almost excited to go back to my bar job.

Any fun predictions for 2021?

It will be like 2020 in reverse but having a panic attack… is that fun?
But seriously I’m really worried how the next few months are gonna unfold in terms of who gets access to vaccination and who doesn’t. I’m afraid of a global apartheid system being cemented in place which will have grave consequences in the critical years ahead. Er.. sorry.. back to fun things!

We were gonna celebrate 5 years of DUMP, a queer night that I co-organazie, last April. I think we’ll get to do it one way or another this summer.

How did you get your DJ name?

It’s Farsi for fountain, not in the natural, ethereal, source of lifey sense of the word but the tacky, painted concrete contraption you’d find in a garden. A friend’s family had a little garden west of Tehran where we used to party and there was the ugliest most elaborate fountain with purple lights and a miniature cave and all. I wasn’t even DJing back then but decided if I ever do I’d call myself abnama.

4 djs you would want to see on a lineup for the first party post covid asap?

I’ll skip my Climax babes because I’m sure we’d all rather just get high and dance…

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

I wanna see European cities committed to the wellbeing and security of all nightlife workers from bartenders and sex workers and bouncers to DJs and organizers to the same degree that they depend on us for selling themselves as tourist attractions and “creative hubs”.
I wanna see more venues run by anyone other than white dudes. 
I wanna see more local scenes that come together for sharing music and pleasure the way they like and that aim for connection and intensification rather than growth and representing something to an assumed wider outside audience.
I wanna see live streams disappear along with covid.
I wanna see less fashion and more sweaty hot dancefloors.
I wanna see more people of color doing door selection.
I wanna see a much more acute awareness of the fact that most people on this planet are not free to travel around the world at will to tour clubs and festivals, not that everyone should feel sad and guilty all the time but definitely angry and maybe think of the global electronic music industry more in terms of the free movement of money and commodities rather than of people and culture.
I wanna hear less talk of spiritual and political significance of partying, rave as revolution etc. and more commitment to engaging with the politics of partying and club culture itself. Pleasure does not seek justification (unless you’re applying for funding ofc…) but it has its own politics that includes but goes beyond issues of representation. 

I wanna see more focus on harm reduction and care beyond the party itself. We all love the hedonism and the mess but we have to make sure those of us who are in the most vulnerable states are taken care of and have a community to reach out to even when they don’t show up to the party or when there’s no party at all. Here in Berlin the work the collectives Lecken, TS Raver and Berlin Collective Action have been doing is really impressive in terms of creating a more solid network of mutual care.

Vril spoils us on his Bleep mix. All of the tracks delivered by the German producer here are either Vril originals or remixed by him, and almost all of this material is unreleased at the time of writing.
