Solid Steel (27th April) In Hour 1 our guest is Chrome Sparks (aka Jeremy Malvin) following the recent release of his debut self titled album on Counter Records. The album is the product of an obsessive approach to production as much it is about a restless hunt for new ideas over several years spent between Malvin’s Navy Yard, Brooklyn studio and a secluded cabin in upstate New York. He spent a month there to escape the distractions of the city, and to distill his process during what became an intensive period of creativity. He is currently on tour with Machinedrum in North America, before heading over to Europe for 6 dates in May. He told us;
"An expedition. embarking from somewhere in the past, metamorphosing into faux-familiarity, while diving into ephemeral moments unknown, rustling from celebration to introspection.

Secret Weapons Part 12 Mix by Butch & Musumeci

I took a short break with the mixes to hammer out some other projects I had swirling around and to ride my bike entirely too much, but Blissing Persons is back and I am happy to be posting a mix from a new friend, Simonowsky from the Black Lodge collective in LA, who reached out to me with a mix that hit the spot perfectly. 

Matt hails from just outside of Chicago and pins his interest in DJing to his interest in UK material around the age of 18. With a little bit of reverse engineering, listening to material from the English underground lead him to listening to music from his own background, sparking a love affair with house and techno born out of the 2nd city.

With experience in stage management and having spent some time working for Ron Trent's manager, a move to LA and linking up with the Black Lodge folks in 2014 was an easy transition; helping book gigs, and getting some legs on the record label/production end of things.

What really grabbed me is the attempt to achieve alleviation from the dread and panic of anxiety and depression by using drone and meditative music. Matt practices yoga and meditation to make his way through what many of us struggle with, and I have been vocal in the past about my own issues with anxiety and how music is one of my few outlets to fight it. Matt has done an excellent job in this case, and this mix is a testament to the great work he is doing on the west coast. Go to some parties of theirs, but first, listen to these jams.

Blissing Persons MX14 - Simonowsky's Naked Lunch Mix

Mòo & Jo are two long-time friends, producers with DJ partnership incorporating traditional African instruments with a deep and melodic house aesthetic.

Since their debut single « Simba » released on Pablo Fierro’s label Vida Records, MÒO & JO has then joined the Mobilee Records family with « Makasi » EP following a long list of respected artists.

It's with their latest production « Lora » featuring Lass's voice and Benjy's percussion, that MÒO & JO takes a new course and signs « Lora » on one of the most respected Afro-house labels: MoBlack Records. They quickly receive full support from Black Coffee followed by Pete Tong and Bedouin among others and are gradually played on the biggest international scenes.

Who else would be better to kick off with than our dear friend Palms Trax? Not only has Jay been a favourite of ours for years, he has become probably everyone else’s as well. His contribution to In Focus is one we have listened to in one go: a “100% originals, features, edits and remixes by Joaquin Joe Claussell” mix, which resulted in a stirring and spiritual tribute to one of the all-time greats.

Palms Trax: “Over the last couple of years I’ve found his music to have this wonderful effect on a dancefloor where the whole place can feel like it’s levitating, so when lockdown hit I started going through his records at home and found it to be incredibly healing. Hopefully some people out there feel the same way!“.

Last week, we kicked off the brand new series with close family member Palms Trax who did a Joaquin Joe Claussell tribute, and we’re happy Jameszoo jumped on the train as well to do the next. Let's admit it right away: he has absolutely blown our minds by cooking up a 𝟐𝟒 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐱 (!) for In Focus. A favourite digger of ours blows his collection wide open to soundtrack a perfect rotation of the earth: "brushing teeth, eating dinner... losing and regaining focus many times." What a champ.

Jameszoo: "For me real focus is too scarce to be able to rely on it. It comes and it goes without me feeling like I have got a firm grip on it. Luckily, I very much enjoy the shift of focus. I enjoy it when focus is there, but also when it becomes fluid again. I remember seeing a 6 hour chunk of Christian Marclays 'The Clock' where fragments of film together with my own (lack of) focus created ever changing new narratives.

During these following 24 hours of music, it will certainly become night and then day again, the earth will rotate once (perfectly), we will brush our teeth and eat dinner, and most likely we will lose and regain focus many times. If anything it will help to bring us to this exact moment one day from now — enjoy."

Dutch techno hero Dimi Angélis is presenting an incredible 3 hours of 100% Jeff Mills vinyl on a 2 decks set-up. Hypnotic to blistering, sci-fi to gritty, all sides of Jeff are being on this newest contribution to the series. A must listen for sure, and it includes a tracklist (scroll down!) too.

Dimi: “The mix is recorded during the last ANGLS Locked stream I’ve been doing at my studio every two weeks since we were in lockdown. Most of the time I pick a theme for the show, and after doing one on Regis, Surgeon, The Advent and Luke Slater, it was about time to do a Jeff Mills special.

This got a bit out of hand time-wise though and ended up being 4.5 (!) hours. Mills is so diverse, but in general it’s always deep. After all, this mix is kind of a club night trip. I start the mix like I would do in a club, but only added a bit more ambient and soundscape-stuff to the beginning.I found the original length being a bit too long for a podcast though, so I decided to take that first part - including the more atmosphere-y beginning - off. It’s almost 3 hours full of Mills stuff now, and overall I hope it shows his diversity and what he stands for. Almost everything he has been doing sound-wise comes along within the mix.”
