There are few names as widely loved in clubland as Bristol-based producer Omar McCutcheon, AKA Batu.

His label Timedance, currently celebrating its ten-year anniversary, has been instrumental in shaping a certain corner of contemporary electronic music. It champions a mutant, rhythmic, UK-flavoured sound that escapes any obvious genre touchstones, as well as spotlighting the careers of artists like Verraco, Ploy and Hodge who push musical and cultural boundaries.

In this Exchange, McCutcheon sat down with Resident Advisor's editor, Gabriel Szatan, in London to reflect on the label's Afrofuturist philosophy, its journey over the past decade and the sense of purpose and direction that have developed over time. He spoke about the impact that scenes beyond the UK—such as China, South Africa, Brazil and Mexico—have had on his productions and label curation, and how they offer fresh perspectives that contrast with Europe's sometimes overly nostalgic take on dance music. He also discussed finding positivity in a dark time, and music's enduring potential to inspire and connect.

b2b sets are a delicate dance, especially so when meeting a teammate for the first time to collaborate on the spot. without prior discussion of direction — listening to each other’s selections, brief communication between blends and attention to the lovely folks on the dancefloor brought us all into sync over time. there’s a point in the set where it starts to sound less like two DJ’s and more like a cohesive, unified journey. there was also a moment where the dancefloor passed ‘the wave’ into the dj booth.   the spiral shows itself. 🌀😍

I can’t help but reflect back on this set like playing a pickleball match with a partner with whom I’m totally in sync: Mars & I vibed off each other’s tracks all night to build or shift the momentum however we saw fit. Hearing our tracks played slower and filthier through Globus’ delicious soundsystem was a bucket list-tier experience. Staying in the 100-130 BPM territory without the urge to go fast & hard too soon was a joy in that room.  This recording represents what a DJ team working in unison sounds like. 30 Years of Interdimensional Transmissions Tour came to Karmen Camina in Strasbourg on August 23, 2025 – celebrating 30 years of summoning music from the other side. We brought a special lineup reflecting the context of that city and artists we connect to, focused around BMG & Erika with venue transformations by Amber Gillen & the Infinite Dimensions Crew. For the show in Strasbourg, in addition to DJ sets from Ectomorph along with solo sets from Erika and BMG, we were pleased to welcome one of our musical heroes: the genre transcendent genius from The Hague: Intergalactic Gary. This was the final DJ set of the 30 Years of IT Tour. This set really aces the mission of the whole tour, and after guests like Rrose, dBridge and Clarisa Kimskii at other shows, we really feel like we expressed so many sides of our vision. IT’s first record launched with Ectomorph in February 1995, and we have been devoted to the left hand path of Detroit Techno to this day, striving to create music and environments that are both timeless and inspiring.

With their radioshow ‘’Electronic Idenntity Crises’’ on Relate Radio and their newest endeavor ‘’fruit salad’’ they’re building a world consisting of ambient, experimental electronica and multi-sensory gatherings.

For this Smoke mix they created a heartfelt beautiful journey through embracing difference and wanting to belong. A tension between darkness & release guided by warped sonics and melancholic melodies, a musical reflection about floating in between.
