Techno has always been about futurism, but in Russell E.L. Butler's (@russellelbutler) hands it becomes a vehicle for a more inclusive, communal and positive now. The Oakland based producer pairs their stripped back and powerful rhythms with uplifting sound design to make for music that is both defiant yet welcoming to all. They have done so on Left Hand Path, Mister Saturday Night Records and Spectral Sound since 2015, with 2018's 'The Home I'd Build For Me And All My Friends' album being a particularly standout work that showcased Butler's mastery of their machines.

In the studio, Butler is most at home manipulating modular machines and making propulsive techno, but as a DJ they expire wider sonic terrain. That's demonstrated on this week's mix, which begins with dystopian atmospheres and heavy rhythms that eventually break out into jerking EBM, bleak cold wave and mechanical house sounds. It's a brilliantly taught and tense selection with a careful smattering of human vocals that keeps it rooted in an approachable realism.

Wonja (@wonj) is an elite level record collector. The Oakland-based DJ and producer has been putting together mixes for many years that are filled with music that is hard to describe, let alone to find. From teary-eyed Italo disco to her series of Wood Glass Metal mixes via world music and more club ready sounds, she is a Jedi-level digger who also occasionally produces solo, or with partner Dan as Motoko & Myers. Her main priority, though, is to devour and share as much music as possible.

This week's podcast is a two hour trip to the outer edges of Wonja's collection that her partner describes as "hard sci-fi party tracks." It is a wide open and spacious selection where alien details, solar pulses and cosmic motifs all drift by as scattered percussion only hints at the most skeletal rhythms. Nothing about the tracks is at all familiar, and all genre terms are redundant. Even when more propulsive grooves do arrive, the sound sources are wonderfully weird and abstract, yet the desire to dance is as primal and compelling as ever. Few mixes are as full of WTF?! moments as this one.

No one can deny that @conducta is surfing on the crest of garage's new wave. The Bristol-born artist is a dexterous DJ who jumps from style to style, leaving uplifting grooves in his wake. As a producer, he is just as nimble, and his Kiwi Records label and regular mixes have also helped to define a fresh new take on the classic sound. Always bright, sun kissed and never afraid to take on a big tune or recognisable sample, nothing is off-limits for this classy, party-starting DJ.

Part of the reason Conducta is so effective is the quickness and precision of his mixes - there is no time to linger when he is in the booth. Instead, you're hurried along from one bumping groove or darkened bassline to the next, and of course, that is the case in this week's mix. Elements of grime, dubstep, 2-step and the odd cheeky bootleg all colour his tightly woven and sun-baked grooves. The result is a mix as fun as it is fresh, and one that effortlessly highlights the fantastic breadth and depth of the current scene.

Techno has been reclaimed and refined in the last few years. For Ghanaian-American Discwoman associate Akua (@akua_b), that means a deep dedication to bringing forth narratives about the genre's history. It's about original, authentic and rebellious old school values of the sort that Underground Resistance defined so early on. It's about breaking modern expectations with a fresh sense of attitude. Her recontextualisation of techno centres its long lineage for contemporary audiences. All this most often plays out in Akua's blazing sets, most often during the late-night and early morning hours of the clubs around her New York City hometown. They find her transmute 90s nostalgia while connecting the dots between past and present. "Playing fast feels cathartic," she says, "and helps me deal with the nostalgia I have for a time that I never got to experience but remember and connect with so fondly.”

This week's mix is a testament to that: it starts with 1994's 'Global Warning' from the late great K-Hand and goes on to cover decades of history at warp speed. There are frenetic layers of percussion and hammering kick drums, bouncing bass lines and arresting rave synths all threaded together into something hugely powerful and muscular. It is only a DJ with Akua's sense of control that can serve up a chaotic collision of sound in such a compelling way.

This Friday, @parris_dj releases his long-awaited debut album, Soaked In Indigo Moonlight, on the can you feel the sun label he co-runs with Call Super. The album is rooted in the pop music he loves but characterised by his own inventive rhythms, joyful vocal features and the many different emotions associated with personal relationships. It comes after years of colourful and psychedelic takes on bass and techno on labels like Idle Hands and Hemlock, and marks a new high watermark in his already assured discography.

On this week’s mix, Parris threads together all aspects of his sound - there’s restrained bass music, lively grime and novel techno. Each one is skewed through his own lens and served up with compelling energy. Despite the physical results, the dynamic grooves retain the sort of depth and detail that keep your head as busy as your heel.

Rome native Allesandro Adriani is something of a synth-wave obsessive and Mannequin Records, the label he now runs from Berlin is the manifestation of his disorder. Mannequin exists across two spheres, functioning as a platform for reissues from artists such as Italian synth-pop duo Degada Saf or German post-punkers Taste Of Decay whilst releasing music from newer bands such as Led Er Est and artists like Mushy and Beau Wanzer. Originally funded by selling ‘Magic: The Gathering’ playing cards found in his basement Mannequin was initially conceived as a distributor for the lost music Adriani stumbled across in record shops and garage sales: post-punk archaeology. By the time of the re-issue package ‘Danza Meccanica - Italian Synth Wave 1982 – 1987’ in 2009 the project had evolved to became a fully fledged record label and now has over seventy releases to its name. Whilst the stylistic range of the label remains broad the imprint maintains a distinct identity by channelling the loss, melancholy and spiky angst of late 1970s and 1980s European punk and electronic music down through its artists and releases. This mix recalls the darker tones of the original post-punk, synth wave era whilst charged with a fresh angst and loss and the caustic tragedies of a world alienated from itself.

A l'occasion de la sortie de leur nouvel album "On", Radio Phénix, la Campus de Caen, a enregistré le concert d'Altin Gün  lors du Palma Festival. https://phenix.fm 

Repéré lors des dernières Transmusicales, le groupe Altin Gün à résonance orientale et complètement psyché, nous a avait emballé sur scène. Guidé par ses deux co-fondateurs hollandais et soutenu par le pointilleux label genevois Bongo Joe Records, le groupe vient de sortir un 1er album maîtrisé de bout en bout, sobrement intitulé "On". 

C'est lorsque que le bassiste hollandais Jasper Verhulst assiste à un concert rock psychédélique d'Istanbul avec Jacco Gardner, qu'il est hypnotisé par cette scène alternative des années 60-70, mêlant le psychédélisme occidentale à la musique traditionnelle turque. Il veut alors faire revivre les sonorités de cette scène en s'inspirant des plus grands noms de cette époque tels que Selda Bagčan, Barış Manço, Erkin Koray ou encore Neşet Ertaş. Il décide de former un groupe, avec six autres membres et de former Altin Gün  (« Age d’or »).

Jasper Verhulst choisit comme membre le guitariste de Jacco Gardner : Ben Rider, et le batteur Nic Mauskovic. Il recrute également deux autres membres notamment la chanteuse Merve Dasdemir et le chanteur et joueur de saz (un luth oriental ) Erdinc Yildiz Ecevit. Les cinq sont ensuite rejoints par le percussionniste de Jungle By Night, Gino Groeneveld.

Les chansons abordent des thèmes universels, l'amour, la mort, le désir et le destin. C'est une musique émouvante qui à la fois donne envie de danser et réconforte l'âme. Une musique qui, même sans comprendre le turc, nous touche.

SHEE has been tearing up the Irish scene and the internet at the minute. Getting traction off his releases through various channels he has now layed down a jazzy swang single for our ears. “Late Night Space Jam” moves through floating rhythms that put you back in a velvet recliner seat, distorted vocal samples picked up from waving a field recorder at tv signals and a bass line crafted to keep you driving. Cosmic, baby. Be careful though, you might get lost down the rabbit hole listening to this one.

It's with their latest production « Lora » featuring Lass's voice and Benjy's percussion, that MÒO & JO takes a new course and signs « Lora » on one of the most respected Afro-house labels: MoBlack Records. They quickly receive full support from Black Coffee followed by Pete Tong and Bedouin among others and are gradually played on the biggest international scenes.

Anna Haleta has running events in abandoned locations, car parks and deserts with her friends since the early noughties, her party Pacotec has managed to achieve a staggering seventeen year run. Anna’s sets often touch on acid, electro and techno, whilst incorporating elements of noise and other esoteric sounds from beyond the more beaten paths of sound. We shared a little time with Anna to discuss something of her history, Pacotek and its evolution and life during lockdown.

Yeong Die is an artist residing in South Korea that got into music after commencing her study of piano at age 6. In the following years she was influenced by Chopin and Beethoven, K-Pop, Bill Evans and Brad Mehldau, Aphex Twin and the Boards of Canada, Bjork, Erykah Badu and DJ 威力. “Studying jazz from an early age made me want to make music that understood the concept of ‘improvisation’. I started producing with minimal equipment, using only Master Keyboard, MacBook, and Logic X... ”. In 2018 she dropped her debut self album “PIZZAPI” and began her journey as a DJ, producer, and sound designer - collaborating predominantly with video media.

Ahead of what would be the strangest year in living history, on January 1, 2020, Yeong Die quit her job and purchased her first synthesizer - a Korg Minilogue. She began working on music at 9am, every morning for three months. The resulting tempest of sound and ideas would be developed further over a total of 7 months from the start of the project, completion being the full length “Threshold Value” - a ten track odyssey of noise and textures and heavy concept clashes skipping between Ambient, Industrial, Manipulated Audio Media, Music and Non-Music Sound. Pieces like “Nool the Que” announce themselves like a love story involving telephone modems giving birth to a dystopian neon future. “Anywhere is Fine” can be heard at home bouncing around the confines of a basement fight club. The 10 minute “Worstward Ho” or “Much O O” could derive from a modern Music for Airports, albeit a 2020 version minus the hustle and bustle, echoes from a place both desolate and tense. 

In Yeong Die’s own words: “The theme of “Threshold Value” is embodied in the title songs ‘Anywhere is Fine’ and ‘Worstward Ho’. I focused on the sense of bearing and pain that I can never get used to. Holding, or not holding up are completely different, but I think the distance between these is very close. “Threshold Value” was the work of finding the space as close as possible between patience and explosion.”

Montreal-based DJ, producer and label owner Francis Latrielle, better known as Priori, joins us for the 79th edition of the Phonica Mix Series.

Priori has become a firm favourite of ours here at Phonica over the past couple of years. His releases, which crossover through many electronic genres, from house and techno to IDM and ambient, have been picked up by such labels as Echovolt and Dust E-1’s Dust World in recent years, although much of his musical output, including his phenomenal 2019 album, ‘On A Nimbus’, comes via his own label, NAFF, which he co-runs with fellow Montrealer Ex-Terrestrial.
