The Netherlands has no shortage of celebrated DJs and producers, but now it is time to shine a light on one that is deserving of a much wider audience. Amsterdam’s Interstellar Funk is a young record hound and talented producer who loves real melody in his music. He releases on (and works at) Rush Hour and has put his textured sounds out on his own Tape Records label - it ranges from slow and absorbing to more urgent and physical, and his DJ sets are just as brave and far reaching. 

As a former Trouw resident, Interstellar Funk reaches far and wide for the records that make up his DJ sets. This tight one hour selection proves that as it transitions through cosmic melodic jams to corrugated electro and deep acid house. It makes for a mix that operates in a rich synth galaxy full of space dust and retro-future nostalgia. So, enjoy his absorbing mix and then get ready for his debut track on the Dekmantel label, a contribution to the Patta x Dekmantel compilation.

This recording is from a very special evening where we celebrated Ace & Tate’s 5th birthday from the basement of Red Light Radio’s new store. A 5 hour listening session took place in which we asked 5 artists to select records for an hour each. The setting was extremely personal – guests sat cross-legged just a few feet away from the DJs and listened to the session through Red Light Radio’s fantastic Klipschorn speakers. What they got to experience was truly magical. 

Do sit back and enjoy these uniquely special trips into some weird and wonderful realms of music we’re not always given the chance to explore.

To kick things off, the Amsterdam-based Interstellar Funk takes us through a series of cuts that are hard to place – at times cosmic and wave sounding, there’s a distinct industrial feel to his set. We get to hear hypnotic minimal synth ventures, tribal drums, disembodied guitars and haunting vocals. It’s a listen that is at times tense, but totally enthralling.

Here is the recording of my set at Rural Festival in Nagano, Japan. Its a magical festival located on top of a mountain with the most beautiful surrounding. I played an early Sunday afternoon set after a wonderful ambient set by Chris SSG.

Topics of interest included his long-awaited debut LP 'Inspiron' which was released on beloved Dial Records back in October and the process behind the whole project. Having been recognized for his unique style in the studio, Kosta is also well known as one of the finest music diggers on the scene, so we were incredibly excited when Kosta sent us this mix for our 'Delayed with' series, which he simply labeled - 'Yellow.'
