Kraftwerk’s 1977 “Trans-Europe-Express” imagined the continent as a haven of post-historical nostalgia. We asked Carlos to reimagine Europe as a province of Detroit in order to invert the usual perspective.
Often, the Motor City is an object of European musical desire, filled to the brim with projections even, and especially if there is post-industrial desolation to be admired. Let’s try it the other way around. The mix expertly strides between delicacy and a sense of impending dread that culminates in a brief sequence where German history unmistakably rears its ugly head. But there is life beyond that, there has to be. This is not a mind trip, this is a body journey.

In the first week of September we’re heading to the beautiful scenery of Tisno, Croatia, to celebrate the first edition of Dekmantel Selectors. In the run up to the festival, we’ve launched a new temporary podcast-series where we invite ten of our selectors from the festival to dig deep in their unique collections. The idea behind the mix is to create a Time Document, focusing on a specific period of time with the artist being free in choosing this period. This period could in fact entail anything: a certain decennia, the time he or she fell in love, The Cold War, November ’92 – March ’93, or the rise of Nigerian music. It’s up to the Selectors to choose and tell us a story based on their music collection.

Our next mix in our series is served up by San Francisco based selector Solar, who speaks his own, beautiful language. Often leaning towards the more sci-fi, atmospheric, and acid-lined ends of the dance music spectrum, Solar is surely adept enough to steer the party any damn direction he well pleases—a talent which has seen the West Coast jock become a much more regular presence across the globe, while still managing to hold down the fort at the helm of his home city's famed Sunset Sound System parties. 

His jacking and yet mind-blowing Selectors Time Document-podcast covers an imaginary set, and is a dedication to his friends of Wicked Sound System. "This is an imaginary set sometime in the early nineties at a Wicked Sound System Full Moon Party. These were legendary parties in the early rave days here in San Francisco, and were a massive influence on me becoming a DJ and also, the beginning of Sunset Sound System. I heard most of the records within this mix from anyone of the Wicked DJ’s. Whether it was Jeno, Garth, Markie or Thomas Bullock, I was always blown away by there live sets or mixtape. Wicked are celebrating their 25 Year Lunar Boogie this year so this is dedicated to them!"
