Applaundub-Recursive  [Another Concept]

In the first week of September we’re heading to the beautiful scenery of Tisno, Croatia, to celebrate the first edition of Dekmantel Selectors. In the run up to the festival, we’ve launched a new temporary podcast-series where we invite ten of our selectors from the festival to dig deep in their unique collections. The idea behind the mix is to create a Time Document, focusing on a specific period of time with the artist being free in choosing this period. This period could in fact entail anything: a certain decennia, the time he or she fell in love, The Cold War, November ’92 – March ’93, or the rise of Nigerian music. It’s up to the Selectors to choose and tell us a story based on their music collection.

What has been a beautiful ride through many record bags, now comes to an end with the final Selectors Podcast by Manchester-based Andrew Lyster. The NTS-radio host provided us with a finger licking good mix, touching on many electronic gems that have a special connection to him.  "I wanted to stay true to the theme of the mix series, hopefully offering something different to the other selectors whilst also presenting something that’s true to myself."

Lyster is known as the co-founder and designer of the meandyou collective. Over the past years, Lyster has established himself as a DJ in his own right, through hosting the collective's monthly radio show with a string of world class guests and making regular DJ-appearances everywhere. "This corner of my record collection really excites me, so much interesting stuff was happening at this time, many of these tracks are what I’d now consider to be classics of that time. Quite a few older Manchester related things in here too, which are some of my personal favourites. For me this mix was more about recording a segment of my collection as opposed to a proper DJ mix. A lot of this stuff I picked up in the basement of Vinyl Exchange in Manchester; this era and that shop feel very connected to me."

Selectors Podcast 010 - Andrew Lyster

Although Lisbon may be a far cry from the industrial factories of Detroit or the rave days outside of the Orbital ring-road, that doesn’t stop the Portuguese DJ and producer Photonz from channelling those epicentres of electronica in his music. Flittering somewhere between the cosmic, sci-fi leanings of Drexciya and the euphoric techno from the UK’s ecstacy charged era, Photonz has been welcomed in by the likes of Andy Blake's Dissident (RIP), Creme Organization and the DJ Haus-headed Unknown To The Unknown. 

Closer to home, since founding One Eyed Jacks, the label has become one of the go-to outlets for Portugal’s next wave of electronic up-and-comers, representing his native Lisbon and spearheading a burgeoning underground scene in the city that continues to become stronger by the day. Since launching Lisbon-based Rádio Quântica with Violet, Photonz has stepped out from behind the booth to become something of a tastemaker on the airwaves, exploring the outer edges of house and techno and garnering a reputation that we can’t wait to showcase in the FM fields.

Photonz’s infatuation with UK rave and acid-house is no secret, and as we induct him into the Field Maneuvers mix series Photonz celebrates only the most hedonistic years from the Second Summer of Love with a haul of forgotten free party classics from 1988 - 93. 

Photonz: "To be honest, I made this mix as kind of love letter to the UK. Apart from a few classics here and there it's mostly comprised of under-appreciated UK house I collected from second hand shops throughout London while I lived there. Bargain-bin stuff. The period of music I focus on here is 88 until 93, so there's a bit of bleep stuff, some Irdial, a few early rave records and some clubbier bits too."
