Emmanuelles latest self released single“Disco Incantato” takes you on a nostalgic journey thru the dancefloors on our not so near past, yet feel so far from our present in the se somewhat dystopian times of no dancing. Discoincantato, out on the 17th of September plays like a broken record, an obsessive longing for the dance floor from within her imagination. The song “é solo un gioco” tries to make sense of everyday life without the hussle, getting lost in thoughts while remembering that sometimes we take life too seriously, survival is just a game and we should live it as such. Born in Rio, raised in Miami and currently based in Milan, Emmanuelle is a mysterious cosmopolitan musician, half producer and half chanteuse. Her songwriting has an eclectic, nostalgic and dreamy approach. She released two EPs produced and distributed by Deewee (the label of Soulwax / 2manydjs) which have become true classics with cult singles such as "Free Hi-Fi Internet", "L’uomo d’Affari" and "Italove ". The latter was included in the soundtrack of "Dogman", Matteo Garrone's latest film presented at the Cannes Film Festival 2018. Emmanuelle was one of the highlights at Eurosonic 2020, and she was selected for Primavera Pro 2020. With an irresistible mix of sophisticated melodies, sensuality, dance, house, Italo-disco and a desire to experiment, her songs have become true transversal hits played in the dancefloors of the most alternative evenings throughout Europe, in the most careful radios, as in the offices of fashion houses that have begun to use them on the catwalks of half the world. Emmanuelle is currently working on new tracks, to be released within Spring 2022.

"I spent the whole of the lockdowns alone which, while being pretty grim at times, also gave me the chance to reconnect with music beyond it being my job.
I’d lost sight of why I started doing things in the first place so this time away let me rediscover the joy I have in a much broader palette of music than what I’d become known for.
I ended up starting a music page on FB which connected me to loads of amazing people with similarly broad tastes and that music group ended up turning into a weekly party in Newcastle which has really made me fall in love with sharing music to dance floors again.
I’ve learned a bunch of lessons though, and one of them is to never do anything just for the PR any more, as it’s transparent if you’re not completely invested: That means that I now find myself either turning down podcast opportunities, or coming back with ridiculously long and indulgent mixes."

After starting the mini Dekmantel Selectors podcast series last year, we couldn’t resist continuing it with artists from this year’s line-up. In the next couple of months, we will release 5 podcasts by some of our favourite artists. This year’s podcast theme is all about ‘another side of me’, wherein the artists show another side of theirselves.

Following up A Good Christian’s stunning podcast from two weeks ago is DJ Okapi (Dave Durbach). The South-African DJ and selector is known for running his Afrosynth-blog and playing fantastic collection of African flavored music all over the world. His performance at Dekmantel Selectors in August marks his debut on Dekmantel-grounds, so we are honoured to have an amazing warm-up with his contribution to our series.

With his Selectors Podcast for us, Dave shows another side of himself by playing none African tracks only. "These days I can get away with playing only South African music, but I used to be focused more on American music. Here’s a selection of tracks that complement the Afrosynth sound but are all from outside Africa, from remote and exotic corners of the world like the USA and UK, by artists like Aurra, Ashford & Simpson, Marcus Miller, Bernard Wright, Alphonse Mouzon, Rock Steady Crew and The Rose Brothers. //What's the idea behind the mix? And which is the track you wanted to play the most?

Not only me, but I think all party lovers are eager for a full dance floor since the beginning of the pandemia. Wishing for this moment to arrive, this podcast is for now, just a fantasy of people dancing together again in a summer day.
For the track I wanted to play the most, I just bought some records in Lisbon and there is one super cheap and easy to find, but still absolutely remarkable in my opinion called “D•Mob* Featuring L•R•S•* & D•C•Sarome* ‎– It Is Time To Get Funky”. It's a hip-house that contains a beautiful bassline that every time I listen to it I can almost feel the atmosphere of clubbing again. 
 

//What tracks have you been digging that you couldn't play in this mix?

My range of digging is usually a bit extended into different genres and sometimes not electronic music are a part of it. Consequently, I dig some tracks that are not mixable or in other words, it is just music from bands that are out of the tempo.
Some examples of it could be these tracks that I have been enjoying but they did not fit (yet) in one of my mixings:

Angeles e Demonios – Abran Paso – Ahoa (enrolle)


//To what has your creativity shifted towards since the pandemic besides music?

I have just started a master’s in Milan, so, unfortunately, besides recording some podcasts, my focus has gone straight to studying again.
Unfortunately I cannot say it is too creative though, I do study very technical things since I am an engineer. 
 

//What does your music say about you?

Music has always worked as an extention of myself according to my feelings, it is a bit hard for me to separate them and it is not my intention.
Music expresses my curiosity in finding weird and peculiar tracks, expresses my willing to meet new people from different parts of the world just by trading music and connecting. But mostly, it reflects a simple feeling of listening to what I love and being able to bring this to people so they can relate and somehow connect with what I am feeling.
Also, I have started to put some time into production. For now just baby steps, but I have teamed up with other producers and this has been a new and super exciting field that I want to explore and know more about. And even though I do believe that my curacy transfers my feelings into music, I am understanding now that the production can reflect it into a deeper level. 


//What connects, in your opinion, the Portuguese and Brazilian sound?

I am ashamed to say that other than being a big fan of Lena D’Agua I am not a knower of Portuguese music so that I can truly talk about it, but first thing that comes to mind would be the genre Batida which I hugely appreciate for some time now. 
The genre is originally a mixture from Africa and Portugal but it feels to me that a lot of resemblance of Axé and Funk can be added to this specially because we are talking about music with High BPM and also about the high energy it stimulates on the dancers. 
But obviously, there must be lots of similarities yet unveiled to me, but now that I am living in Lisbon and digging only here, I am sure I can start learning a lot about it, I am excited for this.
