Every so often the universe delivers one of those special parties, the ones that stick with you and send shivers down your spine bassline. A few months ago in a brief recess between interstate lockdowns, we had the absolute pleasure of playing the closing set at the Bridge courtyard for our friends at Lovejoy. We woke up at 6am, had a 7/11 coffee and a tequila and headed straight into the rave for a 9am set time(!!!). The pure rapture that ensued thereafter was captured via this recording. We originally weren't going to share it, but as we and our Sydney dance community family are both currently locked down, we thought it would be nice to relive the moment together, from our lounge rooms to yours.

Pacific Spirit 004 | DJ D.DEE & Khotin

After starting the mini Dekmantel Selectors podcast series two years ago, it feels like a tradition to bring this back to life again in anticipation of the third edition in August. In the next couple of months, we will release 6 podcasts by some of the exciting artists from the line-up. This year’s podcasts challenges the artists to work around a theme or idea they picked theirselves. First up: French/Belgian selector Raphaël Top-Secret.

Raphaël Top-Secret is known for his notorious digging skills, which he prefers to put in practice at the best Parisian record stores or unknown flee markets. In his earlier days, he used to dj frequently with Antinote label boss Zaltan, touching on everything in between balearic, boogie, reggae, world music, disco and house. As a producer, Raphaël’s work is remarkable too — his ‘Love So High’ EP dropped in 2016 on the same label and three dance floor gems we still can’t get enough of. It should come as no surprise that we’re more than happy to have Raphaël joining us not only for Dekmantel Selectors, but also for Lente Kabinet later in May.

For us, he put together a special mix that covers and touches on many genres. Raphaël on is own podcast for us: "This mix going from 90s hip-hop and R&B to downtempo, house and tropical dance. Overall, it's stuff that I recently found out about and that I really wanted to incorporate in a mix. Beside that, it includes long time favorites as well. I only had two days to do the mix, so the approach was more spontaneous - it was quite fun to do as I was less prepared and just went with the flow. Hope you'll like the vibe and see you in Tisno!".

Magic Teapot Records is an exclusive online record store in Barcelona, but also a recently launched record label (run by Daniel Baughman— A&R at Hivern Discs, booker at audiophile venue Nica —, Marco Gegenheimer - who releases on Studio Barnhus as MLiR - and Jens Ingelstedt). The DJ duo though is made up of Baughman and Gegenheimer, and when they come together they unleash hidden vinyl gems that get you dancing and romancing. Their sound is one that has a lot to say and draws on steamy tropical delights and intoxicating world music that could be thirty years old or brand new. 

Their mix for us is a 90 minute live recording of them doing what they do best at Nica, namely taking us around the globe on a real adventure that has a sense of musical wanderlust running right through it. There are intimate moments of acoustic heaven bleeding into soft, drunken synths and glorious passages of churning reggae and twinkling disco along the way. It’s music with meaning threaded together by a air of expert curators.

Like Jamie Tiller (who shared the Boiler Room with yours truly here, only a few days ago) once said: "Many roads lead back to Raphaël when it comes to great discoveries”. Raphaël Top-Secret has a simpler task today; to dig the bins in just one store - the Rush Hour store. Just one day before his set at Dekmantel, he warmed us up for the dance, playing records that the RH staff are, or should be familiar with.

Not afraid to push the boundaries of club music, as a DJ Raphaël can be heard moving effortlessly between everything, from Boogie, Downtempo, Rap, Reggae, Afro-Caribbean synth bangers, Ambient or Industrial dance to the deepest late 80’s and early 90’s House.
