 Why “White Christmas” almost wasn't a hit
                        New single “Ivory Christmas” reveals the truth about White Christmas.

And why it almost wasn't a hit.

In this “story song” Dave Sale of Ivory League tells us about his uncle, pianist  Roger Stearns, who together with Cole Porter owned the 123 club in NYC back in the forty's. In the new single “Ivory Christmas”  Sale tells us how Stearns convinced Irving Berlin that White Christmas was the hit from his show Holiday Inn. (Billboard article June 5th,1943)  “Berlin thought people might not want to hear a guy in Hollywood complain that there is no snow” says Ivory. “Berlin apparently hated snow”

 Ivory Christmas comes out off the heals of another seasonal offering by the band called “The Monster” 

“The Monster” wound up  a bit of a hit with top 20 spins at WZEW in Mobile and several others. . “We were lucky to get anything at all since the CD for radio stations really didn't get in the right hands on time. But a commercial station in Mobile Alabama noticed the song online and requested a digital file so they could start playing “The Monster” immediately. Which they did giving enough spins to top the likes of McCartney, Cold play and Haim. 

“Its an odd thing really, I certainly have no intention of being a seasonal writer but I felt  a little defensive when I heard someone say “oh that's just a Halloween song”. And then I remembered my great uncle and one of the biggest records of all time “White Christmas”. 
So I thought here then, let me tell you about a little Christmas song.” 

Sale has music on Atlantic under the name Camus. Songs on TV such as Baywatch. He is the producer and writer of critically acclaimed  Katharine Whalen  “Dirty Little Secret” which was featured in the Oxford American, and presented on the World Cafe.

Tracy City  - by The Lords of Grundy

Tracy City is a song whose lyric is based on the prosecution's theory which convicted a young man visiting Grundy County Tennessee  in 2006. It could not be further from the truth. It is used to illustrate the power of story to cover up misdeeds by others.

Investigator DK Sale, who grew up in the northeast with a musical life and brushes with success turned to investigating innocence cases with a new twist, entering the rural mountain community as a horror film director as a way to gather information on the murder victim Malcolm Burrows who most were in fear of talking about. Who prosecutors depicted as a sickly shade tree mechanic while convicting Adam Braseel, a young man visiting old high-school friends driving his mothers gold colored car. Burrows would turn out to be nothing of the sort but the center of a pill mill fraud ring with local doctors and a pharmacy owned by the Sheriff’s family.

If there ever was a time to get back to music this was it. Despite the initial ruse, he has made many friendly relationships with the people of Grundy County and feels for the people whose lives too often have been affected by the injustice and corruption brought on by greed. The coverup allowing “business as usual” to erode the fabric of good people plagued with problems created by good ole boy politics and those in power turning a blind eye. Being doubly intrigued to discover, in this poorest of counties, was the unlikely “mountain” community where Rosa Parks came to learn from the union organizers of the past coal mining days at Highlander Folk Center, located but a few miles from the murder scene in Tracy City,  where Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie converged. Where Dr King came to give a speech and then was framed a communist. All this calling DK to write his own song in the mountain tale.

To sing the song he turned to Juge, who DK knew from upstate NY folk circles as someone who “wears his soul on his sleeve,” capturing the heart of the song. Juge, an exceptional songwriter of his own right agreed to come in as a singer for Tracy City being compelled by the material, and relating to the injustice -- wanting to help bring awareness for the young man wrongfully convicted. 

Bringing in a few other local players, The Lords of Grundy are formed. A name taken from a chapter of the story itself. Those who ride the high mountain passes to feel the freedom from the troubles of life. Communicating the plight of many young people in the region with lack of opportunities found elsewhere. Good people too often turning to drugs and crime who’s lives are essentially ignored by the powers-that-be to fix the problems. The worst just enriching themselves off the cycle of crime and drugs. 

DK is working on a full scale documentary/ series on the case called Fear The Hills.
