Vykhod Sily Podcast - Distant Worlds Guest Mix

‘Out of Sync’ was the pair's fifth and yet again found them cooking up an irresistible funk and hypnotic mix of house and techno on their array of analogue gear. It included top guests Robert Owens, Kate Pendry and longtime collaborator Baseman, and now comes alive in different ways thanks to these fine new remixes.

André Bratten tackles 'Divine Electricity' and has been part of the comic disco scene in Norway for a decade. He brings real emotion to his work and is a sonic alchemist who takes things into all new dimensions. His take on the original is a chaotic mix of bleeps and busted basslines, broken rhythms and detuned pulses that sound like nothing else. VLR is one of many aliases for Norway's Livar Særheim, who does everything from acid to techno to electro to ambient to hardcore. His stylish remix of 'Divine Electricity' takes the original for a night drive through Babylon using a newly built 808 drum machine that will get the floor pumping. Last of all is KSMISK, aka another alias of Trulz & Robin, reserved for more otherworld sounds. They flip 'This is Love' into a deep, dark, late-night techno roller for heady backrooms.

This is an essential collection of remixes that offers something for everyone.

PREMIERE : Trulz & Robin - Divine Electricity feat. Chuc Frazier (VLR Remix)

First upload of 2024 and I'm back on the eclectic samples tip.  Damn, it's been a while… over three years since the reggae special.  I solemnly promised to never inflict this misery on myself again; but in truth, the break must have done me good - it's been thoroughly enjoyable. 

This one came about after a sustained period of listening to mid-90s jump up jungle (just for a change eh) and thinking how nice it would be to do a straight boom-bap mix with a few of the tunes sampled in them. I have an enduring love of hip hop - primarily the early 90s golden age through to the later Rawkus-era stuff, and a fair bit either side.  Back in the day we were as equally obsessed with it as we were jungle/DnB, and it got way more serious when I discovered DMC videos and the Fat Beats import mixtapes down at Purple Penguin, leading me in turn to discover the unparalleled joys of hip hop mixing, buying and stickering up countless double copies.  Therein lay a big issue for me when considering this mix: a straight hip-hop set should be done on the 1s and 2s, as god (or Primo, for fellow atheists) intended. Certainly not with ableton…  

Forced to come up with something more elaborate, and with an extensive, colour-coded spreadsheet completed, I duly threw a couple of hundred classic cuts, acapellas, instrumentals and a bunch of tangential samples in the blender - and here we are.  It's all hip hop this time - no more breakbeat/jungle reconstructions, I'm long done with that.  Above all else this is a tribute to the classic 4-track mixtapes I grew up with, but with enough sly references to jungle/D&B wedged in to keep the sample nerds happy.  Featured artists include KRS-One, Brandy, Mary J Blige, Wu-Tang, Def Squad, Mobb Deep, Biggie, DJ Quik, Ice Cube, Tribe, Digable Planets, Gang Starr, TLC, Big L, Kool G Rap and many more, plus a couple of eclectic interludes and the obligatory overblown intro.  99% of this sampled on numerous releases from the likes of No-U-Turn, Emotif, V Recordings, Philly Blunt, Frontline, Intalektive, Formation, Joker, Dread, yadda yadda.
