Since signing exclusively with Viper Recordings in April, Austria’s Dossa & Locuzzed have been enjoying some serious recognition as one of the industry’s hottest new drum and bass duos. With their debut single ‘Only Way / Electric Boogie’ released back in May on Viper’s sister label Viper VIP to tumultuous praise, the talented producers have been hitting the scene hard in 2016. Adding some vocal samples and plenty of drums in to the mix, the duo has created the perfect recipe for a seriously eclectic track which is a sure-fire classic in the making.

Next up, ‘Shag’ jumps straight in with a mix of swirling synths and bouncy drums, kicking things off with a no-nonsense drop that means business. It's become clear that Tantrum Desire's debut album project, “Diversified”, had way more high-octane in the tank than was revealed when it first dropped in 2015. Monumental though it was, the succession of nitro-charged remixes that we've been treated to show that those sounds have a lot more to offer. And now one of the indisputably biggest names in drum and bass music has joined in the action. Yes, BBC Radio 1 and Shogun Audio's very own Friction has reported for remix duty.

“Genesis”, in its original form, was one of the breakout hits of the album, and is set to reach those heights again. Friction stamps his authority on the track immediately, and reconfigures the elements into a savagely gritty and grimy intro. Dark swathes of bass and ominous pads leave no uncertainty: this is going to be heavy. The point is driven home by a massive, rumbling kick-build, pushing the rave's anticipation off the scale.

The version we all know was marked out by those bouncy swing-time beats, and Friction delivers them in all their irresistible glory. The sharp call-and-response between high and low-end emphasises the groove even further. Friction's retained all that dancefloor energy, while adding his own extra twist of filth in the bassline.

We couldn't help skanking out to the original and this remix is just be as addictively floor-filling. With this most recent chapter of the “Diversified” story, one of the scene's heavyweights has proved that there are still twists in the tale. Another one for discerning selectors on all sides of the scene.

TECH 149 – Document One – 7th Dimension

There's something about Document One's highly individual style which has resonated with DJs and ravers alike. Throughout 2016, their releases took up almost permanent residence at the top end of DnB download charts and in the sets of the most discerning selectors. They defined their own sound, culling elements from multiple genres and weaving them into dancefloor mayhem. And, if this release is anything to go by, they're going to do it all over again in 2017.

The ethereal horns and vocal sample in the intro set the scene, building an edge of tension. It's got all of that smoky moodiness that Document One can deliver, combining tech darkness with a jazz sensibility. Delicate hints of percussion mark the way, and there's still no hint as to whether we're heading towards laid-back cool or road-hard savagery in the drop. It's Document One, after all, and they can do either.

The eponymous MC sample gives us the signal. And the atmosphere is ripped asunder by the arrival of crisp drums and a pulsating, irresistible bassline. Its stripped-back production gives those core sounds the chance to really make their presence felt. And when the vocals ride over the top, it all comes together to make complete skank-out sense. This is a roller that's going to do some serious damage in the rave. 

Altogether, this track takes us on a tour of the multiple facets of the sound Document One have marked out for themselves. It's got the tech percussion and sample programming, a hip-hop edge, that hint of jazz in the horns and undisputed funk energy in the bass. Simultaneously heavy and subtle, this is proof that the Doc One style is ready and able to make even greater strides in 2017.

In 2016, Document One showed us that they've got their own way of doing things. Equal parts of hip-hop, tech, funk and jazz combine into a flavour that's got musicality, individuality and, always, dancefloor energy. No wonder we've all got used to seeing their name at the pinnacle of the DnB download charts and in the setlists of most of the scene's top DJs. So, is it more of the same for 2017?

Well, the intro of “The Rhythm” might suggest that we're going down a more chilled route. We're in a reverberant, almost dubby soundscape, as stabs and percussive hits echo in the background while a dialogue sample tells us about the philosophy of rhythm. There's that Document One staple in those hints of brass, but, really, there's no sign of what this track is about to deliver.

There's certainly no indication of the utter filth we're about to be dropped into. Pounding, heavyweight drums stomp any chill-out vibes into oblivion. Meanwhile a gritty, serrated bassline cuts through the atmosphere with its edge of distortion. Document One's productions have always been hard, but “The Rhythm” takes things to another level. This is going to take some heads off whenever it's dropped.

So, it seems that Document One have still got more up their sleeve than they've shown up to now. The crisp cleanness they've demonstrated in previous releases has been supplemented by all-out aggression. If these producers are starting 2017 off with this level of militant violence, then who knows where they might take things next? Better pay close attention.
