For Eris’s mixtape “Raving Disco Breaks Vol. 1”, she uses old records to create a new style out of fragments. Many of the selections have been featured heavily in her live DJ sets, including her b2b sets with Octo Octa. Eris accumulated these records slowly, over decades, but it wasn’t until touring last year that she realized a “sound” coalesced in her bag. What does a rave at the disco sound like? Kinda like everyone took ecstasy at the roller rink. On her ecstatic mix, Eris colleges together a genre by scratching-in breaks with horn samples, mixing Disco House with broken beats, dropping Miami Bass jams with Boogie keys and blending Rave tunes with disco vocals. On the mix Eris utilizes turntable techniques such as “doubles” tricks and “hot mixing”—a fast-paced mixing style inspired by her beloved B96 Mixmasters, Chicago’s most popular 1990’s radio DJs. Like all of Eris’s mixes, she weaves strong narratives of embodiment, defiance, cultural transcendence and personal triumph (a classic disco emotion) into a flow of body rockin’ beats, scratches, drops, and sweet melodies. The result is a bass heavy summertime house mix for the psychedelic bad girls, boys and enbys.

All profits  from Eris’s mix will be donated to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP), which works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence.

Based in Manchester, Naoi mixes a distinctive, progressive sound with innovative technical talent; a combination that has seen him rise through the ranks of Manchester’s cutting-edge club scene.

Naoi’s unique style, skill and diversity as both a DJ and producer span a wide spectrum of house and techno sub-genres, inventively fused with an eclectic funk and world-music groove. Critically-acclaimed sets at iconic venues including Victoria Warehouse, Gorilla, South and Antwerp Mansion, appearances at V Festival, the 2018 Singapore Grand Prix and other leading events, as well as performances alongside ground-breaking artists such as Camelphat, Kydus, David Glass and Le Fleur, have established Naoi’s reputation as a key emerging talent.

To shake off the Houghton blues we have our third and very special podcast instalment for you! Delivering a forward thinking minimal affair that's topped off with some UKG for good measure, we welcome... Zachary. 

Zachary has had a rich musical journey for a young artist. From learning how to mix records in his early teens to playing slots along-side some of the biggest names in the business. After spending a season on the White Isle DJing for The Zoo Project, Zachary found himself in high demand upon his return throughout the North-East of England. Since 2012, Zachary has played for the likes of Motion (Digital, Newcastle), Middlesborough institution RiffRaff, Loop, Kasula and Idiosync in Manchester. In 2014, he began his residency for up-and-coming house and techno night Octave in Newcastle's Cosmic Ballroom where he went onto support Desolat's Martin Buttrich & Fuse London's Rossko, plus many more

Zachary has become a regular face at The Zoo Project over the past three years, giving him the perfect platform for his deep dubby tech and minimal house sound. There, he has played alongside the likes of Monika Kruse, Dana Ruh, Piticu, Samuel Deep, Ralph Lawson and Terry Francis, including The Zoo Project closing party with Maribou State, Giles Smith and Acid Mondays. 2014 also saw him kick off a residency with the Ibiza/Manchester based brand Departure in Sankeys Ibiza and Itaca, where he has supported Bones, Sante, Sidney Charles and Miguel Campbell to name a few.

Zachary currently holds a residency at Manchester club night The Nest and has regular gigs on the Northern club circuit, keep an eye out!

This mix includes recent original productions from Zachary that bare support from an ever-growing list of DJs including Seb Zito, Rossko, Burnski, Casey Spillman and Kepler.

For our fourth mix instalment we welcome Manchester based Antoine Kiim.

As of recent times, Antoine Kiim has been steering his focus further towards production and curation.

The former, to better his crafts and musicianship within his small, but humble home studio. The latter, the formulation of his newly formed concept, Mise En Place. 

The Notjust and Limbo Radio resident, as always, drives through on soul and grooves, confidently along the House and Techno spectrum. With a break here or there for good measure.

Antoine has delivered a vinyl only, soul drenched house journey that will take you to a higher level.

Another Do As You Please instalment has quickly dawned upon us. There’s a certain energy at this time of year dissimilar to any other, and to compliment that we have a very special mix from Manchester based Dubliner, J J. 

J J has infectiously conquered some of Manchester’s best-known clubs and events in her short two years in the city. Going from resident at Pygmalion Dublin to playing frequent events at South, Stage & Radio and Joshua Brooks, whilst holding a residency with well-established Mancunian brand – Grüv. As it stands, there will be no stopping this young artist on her musical journey… and rightly so.

Her contemporary take on the minimal/micro house sound screams character and want for more than your average club tunes. With quirky vocal samples and ear-catching melodies, stabs and grooves this is a mix to be enjoyed early or late, day or night. Perfect for a sunny September afternoon!

We’ve had a short hiatus here at Do As You Please. A busy time of year has commenced but please rest assured, the disc is still spinning! We have a solid catalogue of records still available on the Discogs and we continue to deliver work from the best up and coming artists the North has to offer. This edition is no exception. 

GILES has graced us with an hour of pure minimal bliss. This young Leeds based DJ comes fully equipped with an expansive knowledge passed down from previous generations and a boot load of attitude to deliver it with. Not only this, but she has culminated these traits into a wonky, rolling celebration of all things minimal… and we love it!

The Leeds party scene is one to be embraced for sure, and GILES has done exactly that. Surrounded by like-minded artists & friends, GILES has developed from a primarily tech-house beginning to a further contemporary, grooving house sound – drawing inspiration from the likes of MOi, Voigtmann, Josh Baker, Apollonia & The Ghost. 

GILES has unsurprisingly received support from a growing number of Leeds based party starters, including Whynot?, Throwdown & FiftyFifty - playing in long-standing institutions such as Distrikt, Wire, 212, Doghouse, Mint Warehouse & Mission. She also made a cheeky trip over the Pennines in February, welcomed by the Beatnik Collective at Bagel Shop Manchester. 

This mix is bursting at the seams with dreamy pads and basslines that just don’t stop bouncing. Imagine flying through space in a massive, padded, neon-lit tumble dryer with your sunglasses strapped to your face and no care or perception of time. Yeah, it’s that kind of mix! 

So without further ado, ladies & gents, we introduce... GILES.

Do As You Please Podcast #07 // GILES.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Motown, the iconic record label launched in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan by Berry Gordy Jr., Carhartt WIP will release a thirteen-piece capsule collection in the coming weeks. The collaboration honors a label that reshaped the sound of American pop music, diversifying its airwaves in the process. 

To mark the collection launch, we reached out to Detroit native Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann and asked him to prepare a strictly Motown music Carhartt WIP Radio show, that displays his personal love for the label.
 
As Moodymann is not man for hasty reactions, he delivered a detailed mix featuring rare b-sides, interviews and live recordings by Motown artists like Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Steve Wonder, Kem and Dazz Band. Asked about his very own feelings towards his mix, Kenny Dixon Jr. simply says: “No matter where I‘m standing it’s good to hear home sometimes. These songs are woven into the soundtrack of my own personal movie.”  There is nothing more to add, only: enjoy the ride!

Honcho Podcast Series 76: SPRKLBB

In the last couple of years, London's SHERELLE (@iamsherelle)has torn through the dance music world like a tornado. Everything she does is high speed and high impact, from what she mixes to the way she mixes it. Her dizzying mix of footwork, jungle and drum & bass has breathed new life into the 160bpm scene and got people all over Europe in a spin. As well as solo work, she plays as part of the 6 Figure Gang and runs the Hooversound Recordings label with Naina while also championing all things leftfield on her BBC Radio 1 residency. 

Of course, her 80 minute mix for us is pure fire, a bumping ride through thrilling kick patterns, shimmering toms and drilling bass. It's underpinned with a constant sense of tension that keeps you utterly on the edge of your seat and variously explodes into life, or pulls back to a moment of unsettling calm. It tells the story of a rich history of UK music, but with a fresh perspective that makes it all the more vital.

For our next mix we welcome a good friend of the Do As You Please camp. A familiar face on Manchester’s club circuit, an incredibly successful ex-promoter & flat-out wicked selector, Dan Pringle. Originally from York, Dan has made base in Manchester and has firmly solidified his presence and talent amongst some of the biggest events in the city and beyond. From running successful house night, Flow Motion, to gracing the decks at some of the most well-respected festivals on the scene, Parklife Festival, Gottwood Festival and Hideout Festival. Dan’s knowledge and experience are second to none and he’s supplied us with a bumpy, space aged house workout.

Throughout Dan’s Flow Motion venture, he booked and worked with some of the best in the business, including Artwork, Denis Sulta, Spencer, Tristan Da Cunha, Burnski, Felix Dickinson and Freeman & Farrelly. From his Fallowfield basement beginnings commanding the decks in Sankeys, Hidden, The Albert Hall, Joshua Brooks and South, Dan’s continued to deliver quality from start to finish. 

Whilst no longer throwing parties, Dan never lost his connection with everything house and techno; having always taken time to be at the forefront of new music trends and innovation, which has recently allowed him to cultivate his own sound. Dan has secured two up-coming London dates with The RRP team, playing at Cell 200 and Egg and has been involved with Liveforlove livestreams during lockdown.
