DaVinylMC, as she’s known amongst many circles has truly blessed us with this vibed out blend, spanning varied styles and grooves as only a true collector would.

London born and raised, globe trotting music selector and tastemaker Marcia Carr, also known as “Marcia DaVinyl MC”has been contributing to the UK dance music scene over four decades already.  She’s a stalwart, an aficionado, and a woman who’s definitely not content with sitting still.

As a DJ – she holds residencies at Jazz Cafe, The Cause and Soho House – her club sets weave together a plethora of sounds that pay homage to the Black roots of dance music – past, present and future.  You can find her spinning everything from tech house and broken beat to disco, gospel, funk and dubstep, but there’s always a distinct soulfulness or jazzy touch that permeates her selections

That versatility is something she’s honed over the years from playing at venues across the world with some of the biggest names in house, techno and broken beat, on top of hosting regular broadcasts on different radio stations, including Rinse FM - alongside guest appearances on BBC 6 Music, Reprezent, Soho Radio, Balamii - her monthly show "¡Take the Con!"

on theboatpod.com draws in a diverse support of followers.

But not only will you find Marcia front of house, she also works behind the scenes helping others with their own musical endeavours. As well as being a music journalist and independent consultant, she also runs music PR and artist agency, Talking Music Productions, and is the founder of Girlz B Like – a vinyl-only platform that spotlights women selectors and DJs - celebrating their tenth birthday in  2025.

My monthly 'Snapshot' Mix for September 2025 revolves around Deep House, Soulful House and Broken Beat. In the first hour, the focus is set on the sound of the Portuguese label Piston Recordings – the second half of this mix features a little selection of my further discoveries from this corner of the music world.

Piston Recordings was founded in 2007 by label boss, DJ and producer Rogério Martins, to fill the void in Portugal's independent dance music labels dedicated to young and fresh new talents. Obviously he has a good sense for this - today the label can look back on nearly 800 releases and artists from all over the world send their demos to be able to release their music on Piston Recordings.

A real treat this month, as I welcome Beane from the legendary Notts party crew Soul Buggin' to the studio. Beane's been collecting broken beat records since I was in short trousers and has played alongside many of the greats from broken beat's first generation of artists, bringing the likes of Phil Asher, Domu, Dego and Jazzanova to Nottingham over the years. We had a great chat about his memories of the scene's early days before a guest mix, drawing on his incredible collection of music - pure class all the way.

DJ and radio host on Radio Z 95.8 Nuernberg/Germany (Radioshows “Limbo Rhythm” and “Headz”).

As DJ he has performed since 1992 in the Franconian surroundings, however, also in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Portugal, Switzerland, Austria… Moreover he was booked for events such as the IFA International Radio Exhibition Berlin and the biggest European Youth Fair “YOU”, also in Berlin.
Dr.Best himself considers his roots in the Hip Hop Sound of the early 80’s to the mid 90’s, but he also dealt with other styles such as Funk, Soul, Acid Jazz, Trip Hop, Big Beat, House, Drum & Bass and Breakbeat. Over a couple of years he has been known in the German Clubscene as a Breakbeat-DJ, then in 2006, however, his style started to mutate… Styles such as Funk, Soul, Jazz, Hip Hop, Reggae, Latin, Afrobeat and Disco got mixed with his Breakbeat Sound and created a new mixture which cannot be easily tagged any more.
