All the talk about phase cancelling (and sync and FM) in the PH8 thread (https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=166419&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0) made me want to do a fun patch with using the PH8 as an osc, which it does extremely well. Using the phase cancelling as an advantage is good fun! In this example, I patch the phase cancelling up for a nice stereo tremolo effect.

The patch is very simple: Mainly, I play with the phase cancelling in stereo. To do so, all four PH8 tri outs are routed to a VCA4MX, with the 0° and 180° outs going to channels 1 + 2 and the 90° and 270° outs going to channels 3 + 4. Those two channel pairs are then used as the stereo output (with some A199 Spring Reverb from the total sum of the VCA4MX mixed in as well, using a VCA2P). It is possible to fine tune the two channels (left and right) so closely that the osc is basically cancelling - since the waves are mixed with phase flipped versions of themselves. Now, the fun starts: I’m using a PH4 to modulate channels 2 and 4 on the VCA4MX. Firstly, it has to be carefully finetuned to cancel the audio with the PH4 offset all the way up - basically making sure that the waves still cancel when the PH4 is used (i.e., when all levels are up). I managed to get the levels down to the noisefloor (well, the noisefloor of my A199). So, the audio is cancelling despite all oscs being up in volume. That also means that pushing down the PH4 offset will mute the inverted waves, resulting in only the “main” ones (and no more silence). Furthermore, using the actual quadrature oscillation of the PH4 creates the stereo tremolo: The 0° out controls channel 2, the 180° out channel 4 of the audio VCA4MX. So basically, for each left and right channel, the audio cancels when the modulating LFO is at the center position, it gets louder in the positive phase and more quiet in the negative LFO phase. Since I’m using two PH4 channels for this, it will create sort of a ping pong stereo effect.

Furthermore, I wanted to apply simple examples of FM and sync to spice things up a little bit. I have the 90° PH8 square out FMing itself to shape the main audio waveform a bit. Furthermore, there’s sync from a D-LFO square that is routed through a second VCA4MX (to be able to turn the sync on and off). And to give the PH8 slave some motion when synced, a second PH4 is set up to do some frequency sweeps (also routed through a VCA4MX channel to be able to bring it in and out). Finally, I’m using the sustain offset from a CTG-VC to “play” the PH8 and D-LFO, basically only tuning up a fifth manually - I enjoyed doing that a lot in last month’s patch, so I thought it would be fun here as well. That’s the whole patch.

I start with the level of the tremolo PH4 all the way down and the offset all the way up - resulting in the osc cancelling and silence despite all levels being up. Then, I first tune down the PH4 offset, resulting in a steady drone on both L and R channels. Next, I patch in the self-FM (resulting in the first pitch shift). Then, I slowly bring up the PH4 offset, lowering the osc in volume, and bringing in the PH4 level as well, resulting in the stereo tremolo. Furthermore, the sync is brought in - firstly without modulating the PH8 slave, then after some time bringing in the second PH4 modulating the PH8. After that, I break down the whole thing, ending again with the waves cancelling (despite being all up in volume). All done in one take, no editing but a bit of reverb, EQ and compression in Ableton (probably the first Patching Workout without a delay). 

The whole thing is best listened to on a nice stereo system, summing the whole thing to mono cancels stuff also a bit with all the stereo stuff going on… Hope you enjoy it and cheers!

PREMIERE: Hotmood - Dance To The Music [Sundries]

Vince Montana Jr left us on April 13, he was 85 years. 

He spent most of them writing, playing and arranging beautiful music. You can hear playing vibraphone (or vibes for short) on pretty much EVERY recording that came out of Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studio from the late 60s to the mid 80's.

He was playing the vibes with MFSB, composers Gamble & Huff's studio supergroup, the core of what is known as the Philly Sound. He conducted the same musicians as his own Salsoul Orchestra giving them many classic Disco songs, amongst them the infamous Runaway with Loleatta Holloway on vocals on which you can clearly hear Vince's trademark vibes licks. 

In the 90's newer school House producers got him back in the studio and he arranged strings for Mousse T, DJ Meme and most notably for MAW collaborating on the Braxton's cover of the Boss and remaking his own classic Runaway.  

When I first heard "The Way U Love Me" I immediately asked to remix it and a budget to be able to get Vince to score the strings and vibes in Philadelphia. I was certain the song could be turned into a Philly Sound classic. Despite suffering with major illness at the time Vince enthusiastically accepted and made my dream come true.

The T.S.O.P. version of "The Way U Love Me" is the remix I'm the most proud of. It features a cast of more than 30 people, each one of them putting a part of their soul in the recording.
The mix you can hear on this page is an unreleased instrumental edit where the forefront is taken by the string orchestra and vibraphone solos.

As India was saying in the NuYorican Soul remake of Runaway:
"Vince, play them vibes for us just one more time"

SPOKEN WORD WITH ELECTRONICS #34: Making Music with 2600 Hz Tones and Firmware Audio Update Files

Number-based trivia: 2600, the hacker quarterly, is named after this 2600 hertz tone, which is a single tone that can override a payphone's pricing controls with one single command.

Hi everyone, welcome back to the show. This week is about loud noises made by computers. Awful sounds like modems, faxes, and my favorite unbearable noise: The firmware update file. Firmware can be updated via an audio file and to demonstrate this, we discuss audio files from Korg's Monotribe, the W-slash sampler from Whimsical Raps, and Nanoloop.

I thought it would be fun to make comforting music from these noises, and you can jump to "The Roomba is Dreaming" to hear the end result. The discussion for this week is a demonstration of using envelope generators to smooth out the harsh tones of a firmware file. In particular, a trapezoid generator based on an EMS Synthi is used to pull out tonal rhythms.

Last week's Boing Boing post on "Booting DOS from vinyl" reminded me of cassette drive loading. We had an Atari 400 and an 800, and both of those used cassettes to load many of their games. I used to love that noise, and I expect Atari filtered the sound of the cassettes themselves, otherwise risk injuring the ears of kids who put the cassettes (intended for a computer) into their walkman (it would still play, after all). So you'll learn about Zaxxon, Frogger, and my favorite Atari cassette-based game: Salmon Run.

All of these sound files work to load data because a lot can be communicated in a tone. If you think about a phone dialer, it is twelve separate pitched notes (0-9, pound and asterix) – These tones are used for any number of aggravating automated systems when you call customer service lines, and they also connect your call. There are a few tones never intended for you to hear, however, including the 2600 hertz tone, which was a tone generated by a payphone when a call was concluded.

Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak unofficially began Apple Computers with a phone phreaking device called the Blue Box. It was a device that sent out a 2600 hertz tone to fake (or phake) the sound of a phone getting disconnected. The two callers would remain on the phone, however, allowing a free call without billing. So in our introduction this week I demonstrate the 2600 hertz tone using a wonderful iphone app called Phonal Tonal, which replicates a Blue Box, Green Box, and a Red Box.
