How about these precedented times aye? (Apologies if you’re overseas and still hurting from the unprecedented times). Things seem to be getting back to/close to the way things potentially were. You have been gifted a chance to carve out an idea of what you think life should be, and then actualise it. . . and I've got just the soundtrack for this transitional metamorphosis. Number 55 comes courtesy of the team captain of all-around good dudes, Mr. Xander Byng. A refined audible palette paired with a can-do attitude, Xander delivers on every front, whether it is DJ’ing (to people, on a dance-floor) or running a record label (Houses in motion // TIP!! Link below). Last year he put out his own mix series called Work it! (Link below), which focused on motivation and getting out there and doing some exercise. During those tough months of lockdown it was exactly what a lot of people needed, myself included. 
 
So, with his resume you’d think he would be able to deliver, well you’re absolutely bang on, and with the precision of one of those domino’s pizza drones too. The pizza is fresh and all the toppings are still in their right place, at your doorstep 2 minutes ahead of schedule. Xander has brought with him his prized A+ collection of beautifully resonating art works. This poetic cluster of music hits every emotion in your body as well as every corner of the audible earth. His ability to amalgamate tracks is second to none, the ground he covers in doing so is nothing short of amazing. You can hear the time and patience that he’s put into this mix and it will secure a spot in your existence rent-free for quite some time. Adaptable to almost any situation, there’s no right or wrong way to enjoy this mix so that part is completely up to you, all I ask is that you listen to it from start to finish. On that note.

‘A Treatise on the Rainbow’ is the touching third long-player by vern matz, and the second to become part of the Nice Guys family. 

Throughout the course of nine songs, the artist takes you on an emotional journey with the help of acoustic instruments. He delivers a very thoughtful bedroom pop made out of poignant and sentimental ballads. vern matz succeeds in tackling universal feelings such as loneliness and sadness in a unique way with his slow melodies and his peculiar singing. Listening to vern matz feels like listening to an old friend telling you about life and that makes it all particularly moving. 

With this full-length album, one can truly get in touch with oneself and enjoy a moment of introspection thanks to the intimate shelter created by the artist’s music.

Tel Aviv based designer and musician Alon Tayar enters the Nice Guys family with his uplifting and swifty Once In A While EP. The eponymous track of this small bundle, is the first extract of this indie pop release. This mesmerizing composition is simple yet effective in the way that it brings comfort to whoever may need it. With dreamy synthesizers and soft vocals, the listeners can enjoy a lovely ballad that will bring sunshine into their life.

‘Amsterdam Nights’ is the debut single by Ray Lozano, releasing on January 19th. Ray Lozano is a German-Filipino singer, songwriter and producer born and raised in Cologne. In her work she likes to dabble in playing piano and bass. ‘Amsterdam Nights’ is the first taster from her forthcoming album ‘Pairing Mode’, which is composed of 12 musical short stories Ray has been working on for quite a time. Largely written in 2020 and 2021 it expresses the newfound pace of life during the pandemic.

In each song (or chapter) Ray moves through a perspective on solitude. From longing for love to feeling contempt with yourself, disoriented, and then empowered again. Ray’s honest lyrics paired with her vulnerable, yet sophisticated and bold voice guide us through an emotional dreamy space found somewhere between heartbreak and hope. “’Pairing Mode’ is like a collection of polaroid pictures. Or like a menu, composed of several delicate dishes” she explains, emphasizing that it is to be enjoyed with all our senses. Every track is “a moment that has been captured and is complete as it is.”

Ray and her co-producer Samon Kawamura (Max Herre, Joy Denalane, Megaloh) create a landmark in German-Asian culture. Their sound is following in the footsteps of the art and soul of Solange's ‘When I Get Home’ plus some quirkiness à la Tierra Whack - but always undoubtedly Ray Lozano. Her music offers a sense of home - direct, soothing, and playful. ‘Pairing Mode’ is accompanied by a strikingly gorgeous poetic film, produced by visual artist Parissa Charghi.

Upcoming South-African producer L E F releases his first EP on Melting Pot Music. Hailing from Johannesburg, L E F is bringing a new vibe to the beat scene. “Music should be a reflection of one's experience” – and this is exactly what he does on his upcoming 7-track-EP.

“Music should be a reflection of one's experience. ‘Antidote’ is a sort of 80's inspired EP that attempts to guide the listener on a journey of healing/recovery through the speedy but sweet playthrough produced. When you think of the term ‘antidote’ what usually comes to mind is some form of pill, injection or administration process that is fast-acting and that neutralizes a virus/disease with immediate effect, usually from an otherwise fatal outcome. Similarly, this EP was created as a sort of quick go-to for any listener that wants to get out of the rustle and bustle of a stressful life and enjoy a moment or two of relaxation and healing. To coincide with the album direction, I have chosen a variety of words and terminology that are common to the pharmaceutical/medical and scientific industry.” – L E F

Starting life off as a cassette label in 2012, @UKNOWYMusic has since expanded into the vinyl realm. Based in Munich, Germany, the imprint is also host to beat event nights in its hometown. The premise behind UKNOWY is simple. It's about following a passion. In this case it's a passion for music. Although they try to minimize boundaries concerning genres, they seem to have a penchant for hip hop style beats with a sprinkle of house music on top. Both genres, among others, are represented throughout the label's previous releases of which there are now close to twenty. Currently, they've only had two vinyl releases, both firmly rooted in house. One in 2015 from Peter Clamat and the second in 2016 from Nemoy, with the forthcoming release being their third pressed to wax. If keeping with the current pattern, it may very likely be their only vinyl release of 2017.

"Our Roots" EP is the third aforementioned 12" and it comes from Swiss producer @Delakeyz, who you may know better as his melodic, beat-producing alias @Melodiesinfonie. The three track release comes with two remixes as well. One from Manchester-based Contours and the other from Austrian Moony Me. Our premiere today is the A1 and original mix of the title track 'Our Roots'. Dropping an afro-latin percussion groove over a steady house rhythm, Delakeyz is clearly gunning for the dance floor. Adding moody chords and atmospheric strings, the producer can't stay away from his melodic roots as he keys in squelchy, jazzy sequences over top. The sultry vocals are the cherry on top of a track that has both a solid groove and seductive yet wistful air about it.

We're proud to present the first listen from the third instalment for La Sape;(SAPE003) is from one of 30/70’s founding fathers. Melbourne bassist, composer and producer Horatio Luna. The left-leaning jazz musician known for boldly experimental compositions moves towards a soulful house sound on Cultural Warriors with a nod to Moodymann.

This record features the innovations of jazz-soul-bap producer/instrumentalists Nap King Cole (Silent Jay x Jace XL), Perrin Moss(Hiatus Kaiyote) and Ziggy Zeitgeist(Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange) who have each, in there own right, re-created and re-invented the ideology of what it means to be a jazz musician in the modern age.

Cultural Warriors came about by accident. A chance recording of a jam session curated in conjunction with Melbourne selector Eddie Mac. Each track has Horatio Luna’s signature organic, lo-fi, loose sound characteristic to a warm personality; chopped and stretched into four grimy, soulful house jams.

From Horatio Luna: “The audio from the desk was raw, dirty and peeking but the ideas were so strong I had to use it... I’m thankful that the genius engineer was MIA most of the night, sleeping in the booth, it made for a beautiful dirty aesthetic. On the gig we took things to the future, playing for hours and just jamming out on what we were feeling... It was like a dream! Completely improvised house music. Serene Favero and Milan Ring came through, as they were out on the town, everything bumped up a level from there!”

This year is off and running! (Please slow down), alas, let us dive into another offering from the audible gods, this time we’re joined by local legend Ryan Berkeley. This busybody is across every iteration of the music scene in Naarm; with fingers in all the good pies. From Hopkins Creek (great music festival), and The Love Above (fantastic record label and sick parties), to dj’ing, producing, and playing live, as well as drumming in the band ‘Plastic’. He’s a nice guy to boot (and great in the kitchen). His continuous support for the scene hasn’t gone unnoticed and the trajectory he’s on will take him to the stars at least. All of the above disciplines shine through in this incredibly innate musical resume. 

Layers on layers, on layers. Fluctuating soundscapes are strategically interwoven to produce this galactic tapestry. The blending of ideas and concepts throughout the mix is sublime as we hear Berkeley fully flexing his musical knowledge across genres. Spaced out funk, minimalist proto pop, mod classical ambient, future folk, peppery street soul, and even some MF Doom (RIP) materialise in rhythmic waves, slowly and hypnotically crashing against a phantasmic shore. A feel-good affair from start to finish which perfectly embodies Berkeley's musical ideals.
